Best Star Wars book

I have a request.

I love the Star Wars films, but I have never read any other the other books or anything like that. All my Star Wars knowledge comes from the films, and random things I pick up in these forums.

I would like to extend my general Star Wars knowledge and I was wondering what book people would recommend. Not a novel sort of book, but an 'Everything you ever wanted to know about Star Wars' type book.

(Any good websites would be nice as well).

The new Starwars RPG sourcebooks tie all the film and EU material together to give a broad overview of the Starwars timelines. Currently there is a sourcebook available for rebellion era (ANH-ROTJ) and New Jedi Order Era. An Old Republic Era is on the way...

The Star Wars Encyclopedia and the Essential Guides (Vehicles, Droids, Planets, Weapons/Technology, Aliens, Characters, Chronology) have just about everything. There are two versions of the EG to Characters though, an older one made in '95 and a new one due later this month.

Easy way to get the SW Encyclopedia: Join the Sci-Fi Book Club and use it as one of the free/super-cheap intro books. I got my copy (normally $50-ish) for just a few bucks, then bought 2 books at full price and quit the club. :D

If you aren't that knowlegable about the expanded universe, then I highly recommend "Shadows of the Empire". It takes place between ESB and RotJ, truely a literary gem. Also any of the Timothy Zhan books are just as good. I personally hold the Timothy Zhan books equally good as the Lucas written movies.:thrawn2:

You must go back to the time before "Star wars EP1".

Not a lot of people realize that Exar Kun was the first one to develop the double saber. He was probably the greatest sith lord but he kinda had a bad ending.

Most of the Lore can be read through "the comic books by Dark horse" or Graphical novels.

Most notable history is "Tales of the Jedi"
