edlib
What do you think? Fernandes Star Wars Guitars I saw these while reading Guitar Player mag. on the subway to work this morning. I'm wondering what you think,.. Cool,.. ... or Tacky? I'm leaning a bit towards tacky myself. And WAYYYY too expensive for a cheap guitar that will most likely end up in a display case and never be played. Perhaps if these were Custom Shop Fenders or Gibsons on the other hand... maybe I'd think differently. But FERNANDES?!? Granted, thier sustainer guitar is pretty cool, but Fernandes, as a guitar company, seems like a small step above Cort, or Hondo. *Shudders* Give me some feedback people,.. the good kind! A must have,.. or a "WHAT were they THINKING?!?"
edlib
Nobody really likes them? Hmmm... perhaps George should consider more carefully the companies and products he sells licences to. Seems like a bad move,.. although I have no doubts that they'll manage to sell a few.
Keyan Farlander
Gah! No thank you!
Jem
Yeark! "WHAT were they THINKING?!?" Ok, who the hell is responsible for this, this... this *insert worst, unimaginable and inexistant negative word here* My opinion: These guitars are made and only good for Star Wars fanatical fans who know nothing about guitar, who do not wish to learn how to play some guitar and are only interested in being one of'em crazy Star Wars Colletor (And that's where they're gonna sell those few...). And the price is an insult for what the THING (I will not say guitar...) is. I mean C'mon, I guitar is a musical instrument in all its beauty, the body, the neck, the headstock, the shape, everthing, it can be even more beautiful than the most beautiful of all women (.) and things like these are just ridiculous, serve no purpose and have no comntribution at all to the great world of music. And you're absolutly right about this "Fernandes" deal... I myself prefer Gibsons and above all Ibanez but I would never, absolutly never buy a Star Wars guitar even if it was made by them (Wich will never occur because those companies are serious when it comes to guitars, quality and music...) Never will I be seen with such a guitar, they'd have to pay me Gazillions of $ to do so... Extra stuff: Speaking of High prices, Steve Vai released his new guitar model, the Ibanez JEM 2K DNA (DNA because every guitar of this model has some of his blood mixed within the paint) and I got all excited for nothin' because it's kinda "not beautiful" unlike most of his models and the price is to die for (literally): about 5000$ What do you think? Those pickups are really queer... would you pay 5000$ for one of'em? I wouldn't. I feel sundenly so happy and proud to own an Ibanez JEM 555 BK. Come to think of it, I payed 1099.95$ for my "JEM" (not used or old, it was new and on sell, twas my lucky day... and those are Canadian dollars so it would be, I think, maybe less than 1000$ US) and thats way cheaper than those ugly Star Wars thingamabobs, way cheaper and above all it's real guitar, genuine Ibanez Steve Vai model with the cool hole above the pickups as a handle, the great tremolo arm, the fancy "plant" drawn along the whole neck to replce the dots and Steve Vai's name tag on the 24th fret. Like I said, fancy: Ibanez JEM 555 BK (Sorry can't post the pic, got problem with my FTP... And ignore the 94 model, I'm talking about the others, I have the black one..) Now I'm sure a real guitarist would rather have an Ibanez such as that one and wouldn't be stupid enough to pay for that cheap (Cheap as in it sucks, not the price...) Star Wars tacky thingy. Maybe if once we played a special chord there would be a light saber's "blade" that would come out of the "guitar" instead of the neck or maybe if you could fire stormtrooper blaster lasers from the headstock which intensity and power would depend on the way you play, maybe if those Star Wars thingies could do that then maybe it could be cool, maybe. But I highly doubt that will ever happen
edlib
Guitar prices have become insane. I honestly don't know how some of the kids around here afford some of the planks I see them humping around with them. The only models that have come out in the last couple of years that I would even consider are the PRS Santana IIIs. Those run about $6-7 hundred. Nice guitars for the price. Even the Les Paul Studio models have gone over a grand! They used to be the nicest guitars you could get for around $500. I'd like to get a really nice Strat one of these days, but I'm afraid my dreams of that Custom Shop '54 reissue will have to remain just that. Even the American Standards have gotten pricey. I'll probably settle for a Mexican made "50's" Strat. Or I'll just rebuild the one I've got, which is one of the misguided attempts Fender made during the '80's to stay contemporary with the shred-metal set (humbuckers, locking whammy system, etc...) It's not a bad axe, but it doesn't really sound ANYTHING like a Strat. That Ibanez is pretty hideous. Only $5k, you say? What a bargain. It's not even a 7-string! But then Vai has always pushed the bounds of asthetics. Satriani's models were always a bit classier looking, IMHO. And how is having Vai's blood in the finish really going to help you play better? Seem's a bit ghoulish to me. I'm glad I'm not the only one around here who feels that Lucas may have gone WAYYY to far with these monstrosities. Zargon
Pretty much you are saying that those guitars are only good for sitting in their case or being mounted on a wall?
edlib
This brand (Fernandes) isn't known as being a great playing instrument. Pretty bottom end. There are a couple of notable players who use them,.. but even with the fancy paint job they aren't worth anywhere near $1300. I can see buying one, locking it away somewhere safe for a few years, then throwing it up on EBay or selling it at a Sci-Fi convention and getting a massive return on the investment though. But, that being said: You could do much better financially with a special edition Gibson, Paul Reed Smith or Fender guitar, even without having the Star Wars stuff on it. Custom instruments from those makers only go up in price from the day they leave the factory.
K_Kinnison
if it was a decent instrament i wold THINK aobut buying one.... but frankly those paintjobs are not that "artisit"
Zoom Rabbit
I would have to handle the guitar in order to have an opinion. I rate guitars by how well balanced they are, and how well the body can withstand smashing through a stage amp.
Jem
So edlid you're an other one of'em Stratocaster seekers... good luck on your quest My goal is to own: the Ibanez UV777 (Universe series 7 strings): (max price: 1600$ US) Steve Vai's Ibanez JEM BSB: (max price 1700$ US) Paul Gilbert's Ibanez PGM30: (max price: 800$ US) and last but absolutly not the least: Satriani's Ibanez JS10TH: (max price: ????$ US but will surely be very expensive because it will be a very limited edition, I don't think it's out yet...) Ibanez makes my favourite guitars... Now IF I could have all those guitars I would be a very very happy man who would die happy when the time comes and who would live the rest of his life in peace and harmony because he would have reached Nirvana, I would be completed. The price remains a problem exept for the PGM30 that I will buy once I spot it. I can't seem to decide which one of these guitars is the most beautiful... Which one do you like best? Tierce
I like the Satriani's Ibanez JS10TH, but merely for its superficial qualities because i know very little about guitars
edlib
It's a cool guitar. That's the Ibanez I would own. Actually, I already own one of thier classical-electrics. My dad owns a couple of the Gibson copies they made during the '70s. Honestly, the last thing I need is another guitar. I have 11 already. And every time my dad gets bored with one of his it winds up at my doorstep.
Jem
Yeah I tend to find Satriani's model the coolest... I have 2 guitars, the "JEM" I spoke of and a polish guitar: Witkowski, that one was my first and it really handles great and I still use it a lot. By the way edlib, tell your dad not to be shy and that he and his guitars are always and will always be welcomed on my doorstep

Jem
Oh my god I completly forgot about my third guitar ! ! I also have a Prudencio Paez acoustic guitar, Made in Valencia, Spain. *Says sorry to spanish guitar* ahem... I aslo need one of'em small travel guitars, I travel alot. (Alot... is it just me or is writting that word weird ??) I would also love to create an electric guitar with my own hands one day but problem is I don't have the knowledge nor talent. I'd be so proud of myself.... But we never know, Van Halen did build his first guitar and it's kinda weird looking but cool.
Keyan Farlander
Not to mention the greatest guitar ever - Brian May's Red Special. He and his father made it themselves.
edlib
Arrrgh! Farlander, you beat me to it! I worked for a guitar company, M.V.Pedulla (actually, all they do now are basses) for a while after high school. I was only there a few months, but I learned just about every step to making an electric guitar, from raw wood to finishing. I do all my own repairs now, but I don't have the tools to build my own from scratch, although I've helped a couple of people design and build theirs. Jem
Arrrgh! edlib, you beat me to it in saying that Farlander beat you to it! Brian's May Red Special: Van Halen's striped guitar: (I'm not sure if this one is the legendary first one...) Now those artist and owners should be damn proud of what they accomplished... edlib
No, that looks like one of the Peavey models they're selling now. I have a couple of posters of his first ones though. He was my first real guitar hero. My biggest regret is not going to see them on tour in 1984 when I had a chance... the last tour that David Lee Roth was with them. I was saving my money for parts for my bike and I thought to myself, "I'll just catch them next time around."
