lightsaber closed?

is there any universal meaning for people closing their lightsaber. in my brief online experience i have had several prople run up to me, then close their lightsaber. i have gathered you aren't supposed to kill someone with a lightsaber closed if you don't want to be kicked.

one of these people challenged me to a duel.

another looked at me for a while then ran off

yet another switched his back on and tried to DFA me but i avoided it.

please help what do they want, by the way i don't play under this name online.

Usually, it means that they'd like to initiate a duel. They may be in the process of actually issuing the challenge, but if there's another duel in progress, they won't be able to (you'll see a message from the server to this effect).

I've found that it's best to 'stay on your toes' if someone runs up to you like this. Some will back away, or run away, if they try the challenge and someone's already dueling. Other's will just attack, as the player that tried the DFA on you did (bad form, but it happens. Best to be ready for it - you obviously were! ;)).

In most duels before you fight you do the following.

Bow your head

Turn off your saber, Neil and Bow your head

Turn off your saber, bow your head

Its kind of an educate. I play a lot on Duel servers and most players follow this, but its no a rule more a preference.

You can't always be sure. Sometimes when fighting (and I think that there is only 1 opponent near me), I will turn my saber off while taunting my intended target.

Whenever they get near, I turn the saber back on and use slashing motions. Then I either roll away or back up while turning my saber back off and taunting again.

It really throws people off. But generally if you see someone with their saber off, consider them fair game if:

(1) They make a taunt towards you that is not initiated with engage_duel (letter K) but instead is initiated with +taunt (unbound). You will know because it will not say anything about them wanting to engage you in a duel.

(2) They run up to you in an attempt to kick you to the ground. If they come within saber range to you, consider them stupid or fair game.

(3) They use ANY force power on you. Consider them fair game.

(4) They pull out a gun or turn their saber on. Consider them fair game.

Generally if I see someone with their saber off, I watch them for half a second to see if they are going to be aggressive and attack me. If they are just standing there with their saber off, I will generally give them the benefit of the doubt and leave them alone. Unfortunately I was killed once because I did that... Ran by a guy with his saber off... looked at him for a second to make sure he wouldn't attack me... then ended up getting gripped by him and thrown off a ledge.

I hope this helps. Some people don't treat this game like any other FPS... a lot of people go by a certain code which includes being "honorable", such as turning off saber or bowing, etc.

Smell nice...

Bend over.

I for one love that this 'honor'/bowing tradition has started. It smacks of samurai/fencing tradition and it's pretty cool that it has developed on it's own online. However, you take your chances with people. I for one tend to turn off my sabre and walk to my openent, bow my head (though not kneel) and then taunt. If my openenent saber throws or goes for a DFA I just side roll and get on with it.

For style I often turn off my sabre in between engagements.. because 1) shows I do not fear my openent (grin) and 2) hides what stance I am in. 3) often times confuses people, makes me look weak..then I side slash them as they run toward me :)

However, when on a FFA server... well, it's not called FFA for nothing.. and all is fair in love and war...

Whever someone knees infront of me, I say something like "I see you know who your master is!" and then taunt them :D

Kneeling is meant for bowing infront of a master or any very superior person...

just nod with the head... atleast it doesn't show u'r a sheep.

I think everyone forgot to mention if you are in a ffa and attempting to win via accumlating the most points, take the saber off as a free chance to kill someone. Walk up, kill them, ignore their whining that they were looking for a duel as you turn around and kill someone else. If you see them again like that, take the free point and kill them again. Most likely the other person will come after you trying to dfa you or something when they see you again, take advantage of this, and kill them. The more you single people out to come after you the easier it is to kill them and get another point. Try to stay in the lead, people come after you becuase your picture is in the upper right corner, and chances are, you have killed them.

So remember, when trying to win an ffa, kill kill kill. When you want to f*** around, those people are trying to duel you and you should just avoid them and find someone else to kill, or duel them. A good signal is to saber off and nod your head at eachother, once this understanding has passed you move along or wait till you two can duel. If the nod is not acknowledged, they are probably going to try killing you someway, i suggest you kill them first. If not for being an insolent pig and not returning your nod ;)

Yeah, I've found the same thing too.

In FFA's, I'll turn my saber off as I'm running, to hear what's/who's near me if I can't see anyone.

Yeh I tend to turn my saber off in mid-duel to taunt or hide my stance, but i'm always wary of people who might throw their saber at me ;)

Also, it makes catching them off guard with the DFA attack easier...

I don't think you swing any faster, it just looks like you do, because you only see the saber in action once it has been ignited.

Oh and w00t, this is my 50th post... I'm a pit droid now :D

May not be gr8, but tis better than being Bantha Fodder ;) Now I don't have to look out for all those people who are deemed Banthas, lol

Since I turn off my saber for stealth, if you see me come at you with saber off, consider me armed and dangerous!

Raven also programmed the bots to respond in this manner, since it's realistic! Nothing like having players with grudges against you in battle! ; )

Running with a saber is A) dangerous and B) looks silly.

Think about it. Yes, you're an all powerful Jedi, the Force is your ally, etc etc. But what if you trip? You could put an eye out!

Or more realistically.....what if some yahoo Grips you? What if he just grips your saber hand, so your wrist is involuntarily inclined just enough that your lit saber dips back and slices your head off?

That would be SO embarrasing.

i want a harikiri move!

but i mean for those people who like to play the game with honour and stuff, let em :) i dont attack people with unlit sabers, cause it makes em happy. i play the game for fun, and i know if someone did something to spoil my fun, i wouldnt be happy, so i generally dont stoop to ruining other people's game to get those extra kills, im good enough that i dont need them :) *cough*

Plus the server could have FF and 'idle saber hurts allies' on.

This caused immense embarrasment when I managed to cut my friend's hand off while I was trying to help him carry the flag back to our base...

If someone walks up to me and turns their's off then I turn mine off and duel.

I walk around with mine off cuz it makes me feel cool, besides I dont wanna trip and fall on my own sword so to speak.

As far as I am concerned everyone is fair game... you wouldnt enter a duel hurt, so even if they get a lucky rocket you can still make them pay (usually a nice grip and an introduction to the nearest ledge seems to work).

I usually turn mine off for stealth purposes. Running along a darkened ridge with a black-hooded skin is way more stealthy that way. People tend to notice you more if you are holding a big glowing stick. I believe the phrase 'lit up like a Christmas tree' comes to mind.

Plus, it looks cool when you hear the noise of a saber throw behind you, and you activate your saber just in time. :)
