how do you get Darth in the name?

I have always been wondering how does the word Darth get into a name? You see all jedi have names and when they became a sith lord they always change their name. For example

Anakin Skywalker = Darth Vader

You see it changes. What does Darth really mean and why do they change it to that. Also...

Count Dooku = Darth Tyranus

Chancellor Palpatine = Darth Sidious

Now if only we knew what Darth Maul's first name was.....

I think Darth is like a sith title. You choose a name (a new name like Vader, Sidious or Maul) and put Darth in front of it. It is just like that: you become a sith, your name will begin with Darth. Your real name doesn't count much anymore since your a sith then!

Well, I heard something once...if anyone actually knows what they're talking about correct me if I'm wrong, please. :D

I was told that Darth Vader was supposed to mean Dark Father, and was a bit of foreshadowing as to who he was. Of course, this was told to me by my high school English teacher years ago. The same guy was also known as being a bit of a booze hound too, so who knows where he "heard" it from...

Lucas said that himself, it was in the A&E biography or that Magic of Myth special thingy on PBS.

Well, they changed the pronunciation of it... Vader is supposed to sound a lot like father. The a is supposed to be short, like in father. If you try to say father with a long a, it sounds like Vader. Try it out. Loudly. In the middle of the night. It's a gas. :D

Darth is like a Sith title - it means Dark Lord of the Sith! I guess they change their names to put away their past - forget the 'nice' people they used to be (civilian or Jedi

if you're talking about the Lost Twenty from the Jedi Order

). The names I think are also for effect - come on Maul, Sidious, Tyrannus - they all have evil roots when extracting from the english/latin. Vader seems to be the odd one out - guess Lucas hadn't thought about that but it sounds pretty cool anyway!

"darth" is similar to "master" a.k.a. master yoda

or in a simpler comparison, "darth" maul is like "Mr." Rodgers

(though the two comparisons are exact opposites it is comparing the title)

and vader, maul and sidious are nicknames

like soldiers have nicknames like "crusher" or "destroyer"

so, i have ended the discusion by providing an answer to the topic question

your welcome and goodbye;)

The sith is only a cult of two since they were all too greedy and destroyed each other. Then Darth Bane, the only Sith survivor, decided that the cult could only continue with two members - a master and an apprentice and this is how the Sith continues on for centuries without the Jedi knowing about them - that is until TPM!

tho i dont think Darth is a mandatory title for the sith. It seems like it may have only come into effect after the Jedi wiped out the Sith order, because I never read about it prior. Like Exar Kun for instance. Back when there were a whole slew of Sith running around, they didnt use the title. After they were nearly exterminated, and their numbers dwindled to 2 at a time, i believe they began using the title 'Darth'
