How to rip sounds from GF using ScummRevisited

A step-by-step guide in such excruciating detail you will beg to be shot. For the benefit of the Round Purple One.

I'll start with the assumption that Scumm Revisted is already installed and the user understands the basic navigation. And a pretty safe assumption it is, too.

GF stores its sounds in two kinds of files. Dialog and sounds effects are in files named 'vox000X.lab', the X being the year number. ('Vox0000.lab' contains phrases which occur in all years, such as "Not picking that up," and sound effects like footsteps.) Music is in the files called 'yearXmus.lab'.

So for this example will use SR to find 'year1mus.lab' and open it, and the first thing we see in the Explorer part of SR is a little +, a gift package icon, and the letters LABN. And everyone knows the + indicates a collapsed file tree. When we open the tree we see a whole bunch of entries starting with '1001-Manny's Office.IMC'. That can be expanded, too, and a lot of interesting info can be seen, but we're only concerned with ripping so it's enough just to highlight the entry.

Doing so makes two buttons appear under Block Specific Info, one being Play and the other Decompress to .WAV. The meaning of the buttons is pretty obvious. :D Egglplant, though, has a small problem. It seems he gets to Decompress, does produce the WAV file, but can't play it. He's using Quicktime to play; the current version will play WAVs, and I think the previous version did to, but some older versions won't. Maybe Winamp or *shudder* WMP would be better choices for playing. But WAV files can be very big and converting to MP3 would be a good idea eventually, but that's another topic. ;)

Of course, if Eggplant actually does have a version of Quicktime that plays WAVs and if he can't play the files he produces in other media players, too, then there's a problem somewhere but we'll just have to wait and see to work that one out.

:jawa Eggplant (do they grow on trees?)finally figured out how to do it. (but having a vegetable for a brain asks the obivious), if you save a file and call it whatever.mp3 does this mean it gets saved as an mp3? Next fun and helpful lesson if it can be spared is one example graphic image, and one movie file, especially saving and playing them on your own computer. Would be tremendously appreciated. At any rate learning is fun:D can't use the internet all the time for porn:eek: have to confuse big brother so they'll leave you alone.:jawa

If you're talking about SCUMMRev., then .wav files have to be converted seperately, the only person with the technology to process the cutscenes would be sued into oblivion if he ever released it, and backgrounds and splash screens can be view and ripped with SCUMMRev., unless your computer is like mine and can't interpret the compression.

On the left side of Scumm Revisited is the explorer--where all the files and folders are displayed. The huge grey expanse to the right of that is divided into two segments. The smaller on top is labeled General Block Info and the larger segement below that is Block Specific Info. If you select an audio file/folder, two buttons labeled Play and Decompress to .WAV appear in the Block Specific Info section.
