Reasons why the JK2 community is NOT dying

I enjoy playing JK2, I play it everyday. But I also think that it is dying. The best players for the game have left, CTF has nowhere near the number of servers it used too and the majority are clan servers.

The problem is the amount of mods which pitch themselves as an alternative to basejk. In JK this wasn't a problem because they didn't emerge until the base game had established itself well. But the modmakers are trying to get EVERYONE to play their own individual mods, its splitting the players AND its making good servers a lot harder to find.

Now a PROPER mod in my opinion should be something different than changing play dynamics in existing modes. Hydroball is an example of a good mod, an incredibly simple concept executed well. So far its the only mod which adds something new to the game instead of tweaking something which already exists.

I would like to see old JK mods like JediBall, Pong, JKRPG, Jnfiltrate! brough to JK2.

Mod communities expect more these days, that's for sure. Remember that JK/MotS never had source releases (or Dark Forces for that matter). The community pretty much came up with unofficial specs and scripting hacks on their own (and perhaps with a little bit of "unofficial" help from some devs...=)

Compared to the other games in the series, the devs have really bent over backwards for the mod community this time with JK2. Of course, compared to some other contemporary FPS games, its not as much. Oh well, I'm sure they tried...

Ideally, they'd release it all, but I'm guessing this is the SW liscense rearing its ugly head again... ; p

As a person who stopped playing in early July and just reinstalled again the other day I can definatly say that this place is almost dead. Like nobody is posting here anymore compared to before!

Seems to me like a lot of you guys are in denial about it. Heck, Aliens Vs Predator 2 forums are more active than this and that game has been around 6 months longer than JK2.

maybe the reason no one is posting anymore is because MANY OF US (including myself) are tired of hearing all this crap that you people are saying and are just playing the game. I mean today is the first time in like 2 months that i have come to these forums cause I was sick of all the whinners and peole saying the game is dead. The only people that ever come on these forums anymore are people who are trolls or people like me, who want to see what all the whinners are talking about so we can point and laugh at them for being idiots.

lmao, you guys have no IDEA what a dead game is.

A dead game is one that has a community of literally 50 or so who play it daily, but nobody else. A dead game is one that isn't even supported by the company that created it anymore. A dead game is a game that is only still being played because the few players that still play it took it and tweaked it to become 100% user run.

Allegiance is a dead game. JK2 is not a dead game.

heh, I just think it's funny that people are worried that the game is dyeing. I'm having more fun with this game then I ever did with the origional JK. It might be because I'm involved in the mod community, but it's also that I generally love this game :D

Everybody gets sick of a game eventually, when it happens for you it's ok, it's natural, people come and go all the time, but as long as your having fun with it don't worry :)

UT2k3 came out today, I plan on getting it, but it won't even come close to replacing JO for me. I will make models for that, it's has a much broader range of options, but I will not abandon this game or the community. There is so much to love about this game that no other game out there has. Just as a game itself, not Star Wars, but the actuall game, what other game has the combination of intense action, melee, cool magic powers?

I'd have bought this game even if it wasn't Star Wars because deep down, the game is flat out awesome :) It's quickly becoming one of my all time favorate games.

I won't kid anyone and say this game will be as popular as say Half-Life in another year, it won't be without some changes. The mod community IS the key to longevity. I really hope Lucas Arts reconsiders releasing either the SP source code, or the animation code, possibly both, it would do wonders for the community, as well as the actuall game itself, but even if they don't, I'll still be here, saber in hand, choping away, making models :)

All the points Kurgan made are fair enough but the facts are that overall (there will always be people coming and going) less mods are being released, the number of servers has dropped a little as has the number of players, no the games not dead yet but its less popular and its never going to be as big as some other online FPS games are.

I've seen a lot of clans die off and a lot of ladders shut down, Raven screwed up the game and its never been balanced in any version. Competitive JK2 is practically dead, pro JK2 never existed.

Anyway, why would a thread like this exist if it wasn't happening?;)

Lightning: I hate it when you say that and dont give reasons mate;) - (dled the UT2k3 demo, join the darkside:D [inside joke:)])

Only a silly person would claim that JO will be the next CS, Xenoeye, that'd take a miracle. But that doesn't mean JO's dying. JK1 is still being played by hundreds of people. It's not dead. It's a shame JO won't be as big as it could have been, but that doesn't mean it's less fun... perhaps it makes it more fun, I detest a lot of the trappings of "successful" games these days...

Most people can get a game of JO whenever they want one. That makes it alive and kicking, as far as I'm concerned.

The sheer volume of people asking how to beat certain SP levels, polling favorite skins and sabers, and giving feedback about the "greatness" of JK2 leads me to believe JK2 is still recieving new players every day.

As for the Forum dying, well there isn't much new to discuss (*cough* flame *cough*) about.

Darkside is always populated, and for that I am grateful.

A game has been out six months, gets great reviews and high sales, ahd has a decent mod community, and you say its dead?

Seems to me like a lot of you guys are in denial about it. Heck, Aliens Vs Predator 2 forums are more active than this and that game has been around 6 months longer than JK2.

Yeah, I guess AvP2 is so much more successful, oh wait, AvP2 had a recent expansion pack released. Well when JK2 gets its expansion, then we'll talk about the AvP2 forums. ; )

Incidentally, the Doom community is still thriving.. due in large part to the release of the sources... several years after Doom/2 were totally obsolete technologically. They even re-released the games in stores (probably to hype up Doom3, but still).

If people want to believe the game is dead, fine... move along. Let the rest of us enjoy it while we can. The game isn't dead for the rest of us who are still playing and making mods!

agreed, I don't even think the AvP II comunity is dead, Primal Hunt isn't bad, but thats OT) JKII:JO is doing just fine, sales for the game have and still are very good. Personaly I think an Xpack is being worked on, maybe even JKIII :)

The number of players has certainly dropped off, but I think its just that the kids are back at school now. The hard core of the JK2 community still seems to be going strong and the 'fad' gamers have moved on. I have definitely noticed that there are less kidds playing this game which is never a bad thing LOL

And indeed, why are they here whinging if they don't like it? Why don't they just go away? A very good question mate.

The answer lies- I believe- in understanding the psychology behind their posts. A "JO is dying" whinger may be one of three types of people:

[*]A person who really enjoys JO but can't get a game very often,

[*]A person who played JO for a short time and then got bored,

[*]A troll.

[/list=1]

I really have a lot of sympathy for the first type, the bloke who can't get a game. There was that fellow from Hawaii, I think his name was Hiteche... Yeah, poor guy couldn't find a game with a decent ping. The best he could do was a 200ms lag affair on the Zone, so I have nothing but sympathy for him and his ilk. But the number of people who genuinely can't find a game is tiny, as there's ALWAYS a server running somewhere, and most people get decent pings on the zone too. JO's far from dead, it's just a shame you guys live in the middle of nowhere and can't get a game. :(

The second type is more common: A bloke who is now "bored" of JO and just has to tell everyone about how bored they are of JO, how boring JO is because it bores them, etcetera, etcetera. My message to them: We're bored of you. If JO bores you just go the heck away and take your uninteresting tirades on boredom, with you.

The last type is also common. Geezus is a prime example. "UT2K3 R BETTAR THAN JK2 J00 MOROSN!!!11" I think the only message trolls understand is repeated banning.

So there we have it, the vast majority of people who claim JO is dying either have no interest in JO at all, are merely in flapping their own gums, like hearing the sound of their own typing, or are trolling for reactions. So ignore them! :)

Yep, that would be me. Now for the record. I just want to say is that for some people "die" has different definitions. I think the game is starting to weed out those who just wanted to see some Star Wars game. The servers are starting to trim down and some people take that as the game is dying.

I know for a fact that the mod community is still active. I just would like to see more servers in my area. Or people join the "PC Bang" server ( I will have to look up the IP for posting) This server I pour some money into but no one seems to play on it. Some one tell me...is the ping to high? Settings? Give me a ring and I'll change it.

BTW, Wookie Beer party is up again. Jump on that too. I hope to see you guys around.

JK1 might be dead, but mods are still coming out for it, and some people are still playing it (perhaps revived due to the release of JK2, after all, the collector's editing came packed with a copy), but compared to JK2, JK2 is definately thriving.
