Deadmeat_X
Strange, but I never saw a topic like this before...tell something about your education, what you study/studied/will study, that sort of things... In Holland, we go to high school for 6 years, from age 12 to 18. There are 3 different levels of highschool: VWO, HAVO and MVBO. VWO is the highest. A special part of the VWO is the gymnasium, wich is basically VWO with latin&greek. After 3 years in highschool, you have to choose a profile. There are four: Culture & Society: Lots of languages. Culture & Economy: Less language, more economy Nature & Health: Maths, physics and science, with biology Nature & technology: No biology, more maths, physics and science. So I started on gymnasium, wich means I had latin and greek the first 3 years. After that, I chose Nature & Technology, and I also chose the extra subjects Music, Latin (I dropped Greek) and Informatica (with computers, don't know the translation). All goes pretty good, I'm in 5th grade, wich means I'll do my exams in 1.5 year. After that I'm not too sure what I'm gonna study, sure thing is I'll go to a Technical University, but I don't know wich one, r wich study. Right now you... Feral
In Britain, we are in high school from age 11 to age 16, and at age 16 we do GCSE's (General Certificate of Secondary Education), or 'O' Levels. Then you either go to college or, if your school supports it, 6th form/Year 12 where you do 'A' Levels (supposing your O levels were good enough to warrant this). If your A level results are good enough, you go to University, the best of which are Oxford and Cambridge, and get a degree. From there, it's up to you. In most schools, you get to choose 5 subjects to do in year 10 and year 11 (age 14/15 and 15/16) along with English (double award), Maths, and Science (double award). Unless you go to a grammar school. For my options, I chose Religious Studies (which is much better than it sounds), French, Systems (Electronics), Business Studies, and History. I have passed my Maths GCSE already, but since I "only" got a C the school are making me do it again. After passing my GCSE's (no need for modesty), I shall to go to college and then university, hopefully one of the top ones. Then I shall try and get a job in the media, preferably writing. In fact, ideally I would be an author, but not many authors have come straight out of university and into writing.
Natty
In Australia the school year is from late January to mid December- with Easter holidays, July holidays and September holidays (the dates vary slightly depending on what state of Australia you're in) Technically school starts with Kindergarten when you're about 4. After kindergarten (or kindy as it's often referred to) we go onto primary school which goes from prep to grade6. We then have highschool which is year7-year12 In year11 and year12 we have exams. In this case in year11 you finish in late November (that includes the exam period) and year12 after exams you finish in mid November. Year11 and 12 is known as VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education) in Victoria (where I live) or HSC (Highschool Certificate) everywhere else in Australia I can't remember how the markings go- the VCE changed at the end of year11 and so in year12 basically no one had any idea what was going on at all
Pisces
In Canada there's elementary school from kindergarten (when you're 4 or 5) to grade 8. Then there's high school for grades 9-12 with an optional grade after that called O.A.C. I'm currently in Grade 10 and I take Science, Music, Health/Gym, and History. Next semster I have Math, English, French, and Civics/Career studies. French is a mandatory course up until Grade 9 unless you get special permission. There's also other courses available at my school like Computer business/programming, art, woodworking, design technology and the likes. And, of course there's the choice between public or Catholic schools in either elementary or high schools. I wen to a Catholic elementary high school but I now attend a public high school. Joshi
feral has basically told you of the english way of school, so i'm basically going to tell you of my academic, um, backround, foreground, thingie (i'm very articulate) i completed my GCSE's (general certificate of secondary educatio, if you didn't read ferals) last year, i got seven B's and two C's whic are all pass marks. i'm now doing AS levels (first year of A-levels, it's weirdly complicated), in Elgish Literature, Art, ICT (information communication technology), Pure Maths and Maths Statistics. i am currently predicted B's in all of them with the exception of art where i'm predicted a c, butif i work hard, he says i could get an A. after my first year of As levels, i will go on to do my A level, and will be dropping one of my current subjects (althogh i don't know which yet, it's a competition between english lit and maths) after a- level, i will go to universeti and hopefully do a B-TEC in graphic design and will go onto do work in book cover and poster designs. on the side, i would like to write novels of all sorts and hopefully become an author like feral. i may take a part time job in a newspaper office before doing this, but i am at the moment currently woking on a book for pleasure purposes, if i get to finish it i may try and get it published and see how i go from there. SuicidalXWing
School in the US is basically the same setup as Canadia. So there is nothing new to tell really. Except that each state in the US has different requirements for students to graduate high school. I graduated, thank god. College is setup by what you decide to go for such as Associate's Degree (2 year), Bachelor's Degree (4 year), Master's Degree, and then Doctorate. I may have missed one, but that's all that I know of. The cost for college differs for each college and whether or not its a state college. Its too expensive if ya ask me. State and Community colleges tend to be cheaper. I'll be going to college once I get back from my 6 months of training for the ARNG. Luckily the government will reimburse me for all money I pay for college after I finish since I joined the military. I'll probably go into getting a business degree on account that I want to open a bar or club.

I wanna white Christmas *cries pathetically* actually Aussie Christmas is fun, sitting around having a BBQ and playing in the pool, it's great- it's what the whole Aussie spirit is all about. Unless you've ever been to Australia then I seriously doubt anyone would understand what we're on about- it's great being Australian no one knows what the hell your talking about and then you can just laugh at people from overseas who pretend to know what your talking about when it's pretty obvious they don't which makes em look like idiots. Least I don't pretend to know what Americans/Canadians/Brits and whoever else are talking about Everyone thinks they know what Australia feels/thinks/acts when they obviously don't- specially the Brits, no wonder so many Aussies consider them a laughing stock. Still I suppose most countries consider Australia a laughing stock, still it is more amusing when people tell us to "throw another shrimp on the barbie" when they've most likely never seen a barbie or even know how to turn one on *giggles* and "a dingo ate my baby" the dingo never ate the baby that stupid whore killed the baby, and we don't have cars in Australia we ride around in kangaroo pouches and we don't have TV either- although for some strange reason we have the internet. Go figure
SuicidalXWing
Ride around in Kangaroo pouches? Do you put a lining in so your feet don't get all gross? I do my best to understand Australians, but most that I have met are arrogant c*nts who think they know everything. I remember one Australian who was in our school, he dug himself deep and had no means of escape, he was making jokes and made one too many, the last about the United States, as a result he got the whole bus on his ass. I felt sorry for him, but angry at the same time.
Feral
Hmm...I don't see why some Americans are so totally patriotic about the smallest things. I have a friend from South Africa who makes jokes about Britsh life all the time and we just laugh, although I suppose that's because we're one of the world's most cynical countries. Kjølen
I dont know... I'm certainly not that patriotic, I love my country, but some people go too far in praising a chunk of land. They only thing worth praising is the "In God we Trust" pprase. Hmmm, God did give us some nice, and plentiful land, too bad its not the same over in the middle-east. Joshi
i'm not patriotic whatsoever becaue i'm only english on paper (figure of speech, it's probably all computerised by now), but in my heart, i will always be an indian, and you can say what you like about them, but in my opinion, they may be third world, but with less money, they're a helluva lot better morally than england and america put together. and natty, your right, i don't know what it's like to be australian, but i do know some things, i do know that for a start, you don't barbeque shrimp, knowone does, it'd make you sick, secondly, kangaroos would even let you near them let alone let you in there pouches. dingo's can't eat babie, there jaws aren't wide enough. and finally, of course you guys have tv's, whats the point in australian soap's if you don't have tv's it would be kind of stupid (and plus, i remmber i while ago you were talking about 24, which didn't prove to me that you had tv's because i already knew you did, but that's proof for any other idiots out there). i don't claim to always nkow what your talking about, but i can understand you most of teh time, i've got family in australia and i've learnt to understand them quite well. and just to clarify, i think english and american people know what a BBQ is, they just don't know the fast way of lighting one (or have we all forgotten our little trouble there)

Granted I think the shrimp was pre-cooked (boiled), but it was still BBQed. As for kangaroos not letting people close, my best friend's mother had a kangaroo as a pet when she lived in Australia. It's like saying other wild animals won't come close, but I've had wild birds land on my hands... it's amazing what some animals will do if you provide them with food and don't behave in a threatening manner. Heck, wild deer used to eat from my hand when I was a little kid. As for the dingo eating the baby... course it could, but it might have to rip it apart first. Oh, and the fast way to light a BBQ is to toss some gasoline on it. Kryllith
Natty
Australia is unique SuicidalXWing most of the stuff I said about Australia is sarcasm because most people from other countries seem to have this vision that what I just said is basically all we do which its true in some ways but not the way that people think if that makes sense. Guybrush122
Global Studies, Creative Writing (IB), English, Film Studies (IB), Play Production, Music Theory (IB) In America, or at least New York, we have required courses, and then "electives". Electives are a list of courses you get to choose from. You can choose around two or three. IB courses are electives that are on a college level and they look really ****ing fabulous on your record. In a perfect world id have the above classes and the above classes only. But alas, Science and Math is required untill I'm in junior year (eleventh grade). brief
Originally posted by SuicidalXWing School in the US is basically the same setup as Canadia. So there is nothing new to tell really. Except that each state in the US has different requirements for students to graduate high school. Well, there is the difference of elementary school and middle school.. which I didn't see mentioned by NeoDios for Canada. Elementary school (I believe this is called primary school in the UK) goes from 1st grade to 5th or 6th grade (depending on your location). Then you go on to Middle School (also called Junior High School), which is variably from 6th-8th or 7th-9th grade (again, depending on location). Then you go on to High School, which ends at 12th grade. I assume that required for any high school would be English Literature for all the years you are in High School. In my school, there was also 2 years of required math classes, 3 years of required science classes (Biology, Physics, and Chemistry), 2 years of required Physical Education (PE), 4 years of History classes, and then some combination of elective classes (foreign language, arts, etc.) We called the college level courses that high school students could take AP classes (stands for Advanced Placement). In addition to AP classes, there were also "Honor" classes, which raise your GPA (Grade Point Average)... Say if I was good at Geometry one year. I could then opt to take Honors Advanced Algebra next year (pending approval from my current math teach), and if I get a B in that class, instead of counting as a "3.0" for the class, I get "3.5" for it. If I were taking an AP class, then a B in the class equated to an A in normal classes. I'm not sure if there's a GPA system outside of the US, so I'll explain it here: Each grade you get from a class is assigned a point number, supposedly from 0 to 4, so to calculate your GPA (and thereby know how good a student you are overall), you add the points you have for all of your classes together (with the exception of PE classes), and then divide by the number of classes you have. So if you get an average of 3.5 or above, you're considered an A student. The points are assigned thus: F - 0 D - 1 C - 2 B - 3 A - 4 Supposedly, then, the best you could hope to get for your GPA would be 4.0--meaning you've got A's in all of your classes. But if you have Honors or AP classes, which can raise the number of points you get from said class, you might be able to get something higher than 4.0. Say if you have 3 AP classes, and all A's from all of your classes (6 total), you would have a 4.5 GPA. So if you're an over-achiever, you could take all AP classes, get all A's from them, and get a 5.0 GPA. When you apply for college, the university admissions look over your transcript and your GPA, which would be a factor in whether or not they accept you. The GPA is also used to rank all the students in the school, in terms of how well they are doing in academia. For High School students to apply to the bigger colleges, however, typically another test is needed--the Student Achievement Test (SAT). A four-hour test (if memory serves) to gauge your mathemetical, verbal, comprehensional, and writing skills. A perfect score on the SAT's would be 1600 points (although scores over 1000 are already considered to be pretty good). Much of the English portion of the test rely upon your knowledge of lesser used, but more complex words in the English language, so much of a student's time in preparing for the SAT's is to memorize words. If you ever hear a reference to "SAT words" in American TV or movies, that's that they're referring to.
