Star trek Nemesis: A Franchise's Final Journey Begins (Possible Spoilers)

I know this may not be well recieved on a Star Wars board, but LotR has around 3 threads on the first page right now, so I figure this could go over well.

I saw Nemesis on the 14th, and I thought it was quite the movie. I was impressed with a great portion of it, and (being a long time fan [Trekker... not Trekkie... I don't have rubber ears:)]) I was miffed about continuity issues and reused cliches. But my overall impression was a good one. 8 out of 10 stars on my scale.

But the critics and the box office reciepts tell a tale of doom for the movie and possibly the franchise itself. The movie finished opening weekend with only 18.5 million. Once you adjust all the previous Star Trek movie 1st weekend grosses for inflation, 18.5 million is the smallest first weekend gross of ANY Star Trek movie. This could unfortunately spell the end of the Next Generation chapter of Star Trek, and quite possibly the entire Trek franchise itself.

I was feeling almost depressed over this news. I've been a sci-fi fan since my earliest childhood memories, and a Star Trek fan just as long. When something I had loved for so long seemed to be spiraling down the drain... well, Imagine if the Star Wars franchise suddenly went bankrupt. Totally uncool.

But wait, there is a glimmer of hope! The Paramount (Star Trek's distributor and "owner", for lack of a better term) big-wigs are quite pleased with the movie's weekend gross. If the movie on total theatrical gross earnd $55 million or more, it will become the 3rd largest grossing franchise of all time (Behind Star Wars and the Bond films). Hmm, a ray of hope.

So what do you think? Is it about time that Trek died and we moved on to somethign else? Is there life in the old lady, yet?

Discuss.
