Beni, you say your town of springfield is the original springfield for the simpsons? Well I live near a town called Springfield. Springfield is home to the Springfield Armory, Smith and Wesson, and the Basketball Hall of Fame. The reason why we have the hall of fame is because the game was invented at Springfield College by Mr. Naismith himself. I think he was a teacher there.

Thats cool! Do you know how many springfield's there are? There are quite a bit...and Simpsons is just a big pile of all of them I'm pretty sure....I hear there is a replica simpsons house somewhere in the U.S. Not sure where though. Anyhoo, I'm not here to argue which springfield it is :) Cuz I know its not mine, or yours...its nobodys....but I like how they try to disguise which stat it is...

Like the Vincent Price episode, where Marge is calling in to report something, i forget, and they ask for her address...so she's like "742 Evergreen Terrace....Springfield, O hi Muade" Like they were saying "ohio" :)

or when apu has to get his citizenship and homer and lisa are trying to locate springfield on a map of the U.S. just as lisa is about to point it out, bart jumsp right in front of the map to tell them something.

but it's true, the reason that the writers of teh simpsons chose the naem sprigfield is ebcause no one would know where it as as there are so many. and they'll never tell.

Springfield is not in Florida, that's a fact. It isn't in the north, because Lisa could point to it with ease on a levitated map. It's is close to the Pacific Ocean and also Cuba. There's Nevada-like desert (and Vegas) within reasonable driving distance, and New York within coach-ride distance.

Thus, there is only one place it could possibly be...caution, this could amr your Simpsons experience!

Springfield is located in the United States of America

i just saw one of the newer simpsons episodes where someone from brazil wanted to send lisa a letter, but didn't know the state she was in. she simply said that it's quite simple, as long as you put all of the clues together, you'll find it. i think teh writers of the simpsons are running out of ideas. (proof of this is one of the newer blackboard gagas say "no one reads these anymore".

That was just a running joke that's been going on for several seasons. And, according to Groening on the DVD commentaries, they really got stuck on blackboard gag after the first couple of seasons, and now they just stick them to the newest writer :)

Double-Post doesn't necessarily mean posting the same message twice Sam, just think of everything you are going to say before you click post :)

I've decided I'm not going to buy the Simpsons DVD's until the next one is released (season 3)...this is kind of a simpsons thread now, sorry! :) haha. Today (on my local fox station) they played the "Lord of the Flies" episode, where they are stuck on the island...."It tastes like.....BURNING." Classic.

Thanks to the mod who decided to make this a forum, I found it a bit off-topic as well....but yet, so enjoyable :)

Why must we argue about where springfield is, when we could argue about why the people are yellow? Or why the simpsons are the only family with crazy hair basically...endless questions.

But again, Springfield from the simpsons is most certainly a collaberation of all Springfields.

The characters are yellow to make them distinctive, and Matt Groening thinks that for a cartoon chracter to be popular, you have to be able to instantly identify them in silhouette. Early on, there were a few spikey-haired background characters, and people with 5 o'clock shadows, but they stopped Bart & Homer from being so distinctive. Now the only characters with stubbles are Herb, Homer, and Lenny. They also decided that the Simpson kids should be the only chracters with yellow hair, explaining why Barney's changes to brown after the first season.

Anyway, it can't be Illinois, since it's not far south enough and it isn't near the Pacific Ocean.

I'm really, really sorry. My mouse has been having a lot of problems.

sorry, im lazy and didnt read all that stuff up there ^

but on to now where springfield 'is'

this next information was taken directly from the alt.tv.simpsons newsgroup FAQ

What is the simpsons home address?

That depends.

In Blood Feud 94 Evergreen Terrace, Springfield, USA

In Mr Lisa Goes to Washington 59 Evergreen Terrace, Springfield, TA

In Bart the Lover 94 Evergreen Terrace, Springfield, USA

In Kamp Krusty 430 Spalding Way, Springfield, USA

In New Kid on the Block 1094 Evergreen Terrace

In Marge In Chains 742 Evergreen Terrace, Springfield

In Homer the Vigilante 723 Evergreen Terrace

In Bart vs. Australia 742 Evergreen Terrace

In the Oprah Winfrey Interview 742 Evergreen Terrace

The most probable assumption is 742 Evergreen Terrace, the only address currently being used.

It has been suggested that the address used in Kamp Krusty hints to monologist and actor Spalding Gray, whose humor is also considered subtle, poignant, and yes, generally irritating to Republicans. The Evergreen Terrace address is in honor of the street MG lived on as a boy. The others were undoubtedly inspired by MG's alma mater.

Where IS Springfield, anyway?

"Springfield" is a fictional location. One more time for the world: "Springfield" is a FICTIONAL location. It is not in Illinois, not in Massachusetts, not in Southern Missouri, not in Northern Kentucky. MG says he chose the name because it is one of the most common city names (121 Springfields exist in the U.S.) and the setting of the antithesis to The Simpsons, Father Knows Best. Indeed, from Groening's childhood perspective, Springfield was "the next town over" from his home in Eugene (a suburb of Portland), Oregon.

On a side note, L.I.S.A. reader Mark adds, "Eugene is a wildly liberal town. Springfield is a staunchly conservative one, further accenting the difference. Also, there is a cemetery in the middle of the University of Oregon (Groening's alma mater) that has a statue of soldier whose head was cut off as a prank by college students. The prank was universally condemned." (Sound familiar? See 7G07).

According to Producer/Director David Silverman, Springfield is in the state of North Takoma, eight miles from Toon Town (although it appears this still isn't to be considered an "official" answer). In Duffless, the state abbreviation on Homer's driver's license is NT - NT probably representing North Takoma. See next question.

The bottom line, though, is that even when the series makes reference to places and events unique to a specific Springfield, it does not mean that the series takes place in that given state.

According to some sources on the group, Matt Groening has said that although Springfield is basically "anytown USA" it does have features somewhat similar to towns in Oregon, where Matt grew up.

Read ]Where is springfield ? if you're still not convinced.

It's definately based on Springfield, Oregon with some creative liberties and carefully crafted things to make you wonder.

"The Springfield Topes faced teams from Shelbyville, Salem, and Burlington. These would be towns and small cities from the same area as Springfield."

Salem is in Oregon and somewhat close to Springfield. I think I remember a Burlington there as well.

"Springfield was founded by a bear-fighting woodsman"

Oregon is the lumber capital of the Pacific Northwest.

"[Grampa's earthquake preparedness] suggests that Springfield is along the Pacific Rim, or perhaps in southeastern Missouri.''

Pacific Rim indeed.

"Homer's state has daylight savings time. Some mountain zone states do not"

Oregon has DST.

"The Family is near a beach"

Well, yeah, kinda.

There's a lot to link it to Springfield Missouri as well. I think perhaps it's in both locations at the same time. There's also the Civil War monument, which would suggest to me that the Simpsons is trying to keep its universal appeal by being all across the nation at one time.
