Spedema28
Hi I've been making skins for a couple of months now, and feel like it would be more challenging/rewarding to make models. The problem is I am dirt poor. So I can't afford 3DSMax. I've gotten moderately comfortable working with Milkshape, but all the tutorials I've read indicate that the next step for me in modeling requires 3dsmax 4.x. Is there any other alternative? A free one? Alternatively, would the Italian version of 3dsmax 4.2 work as well as anything else? (aside from it being in italian obviously) thanks for helping me out, z?gir
Psyk0Sith
Any version of 3D max ABOVE 4 will work, i dont think it matters if its in Italian, as long as the XSI plugin works with it i guess.
babywax
There is gmax, a free version of 3dsmax, but it doesn't have as many features.
Spedema28
I didnt realize gmax supported the MD3 import script for 3DSMax. Ahh now I can begin attempting modeling, I'll write another note in a couple of weeks when I progress far enough along to actually have questions worth asking. Thanks for responding, gmax here I come. zGir
Rebel_Spy
Sorry to be a buzzkiller... Indeed, Gmax will help you to become more proficient with 3d modeling 'cause Gmax is a "light" version of 3dsmax. But, you can't put model in-game for JK2-JO with gmax, you must have 3dsmax 4.x for that. Don't get me wrong, I been using Gmax for quite some and I believe that it's a good tool for 3d modeling but not as good as 3dsmax. However, you can do all the modling stuff, and uvwmapping on Gmax, and then send the file to someone with 3dsmax in order yo put your model ingame. Wes Marrakesh
Actually, you only need 3dsmax for player models, not weapons and items.
Rebel_Spy
yeah, I almost forgot that part. You must have 3dsmax in order to put player models in game.
Spedema28
How much work would someone else have to do for me if I did as much as I could using the free software at my disposal? i.e. what is it that 3dsmax can do that gmax can't? I guess I'll start my download of the italian version of 3dsmax, in the meantime. Thanks for all the help, zGir
Psyk0Sith
3D max can "weight" (attach) your mesh to the skeleton, Gmax doesnt have a "skin" modifier to do it so you need someone else to do it for you. Someone used to the modifier, with an error free mesh, could weight the whole thing in about 2 hours (my own meshes when completed can take even less than that to have something rough in-game) The worst part is weighting the fingers that's the longest part...facial anims will also slow things down.
