Ok,ok-Need help with fighting system and stuff.......

Recommended Posts

I was watching the KOTOR footage on the Offical xbox magazine demo disc, and something confused the hell out of me.The main guy ran into a group of creatures, then a screen box opened, and the curser went onto a special attack, and he did it.Now,my question...i thought YOU controlled the combat like Devil May Cry or something..you know, hit 'x' to swing,"a" to jump kinda stuff.I'm confused by this.I hope you don't gotta program attacks like final fantasy.I hate that crap, just stand still, wait for a menu window to open, then click on strike. It was probably explained somewhere or something, but i miss it or had a bad blonde moment-lol.Can someone clear this up for me??

The combat system is described as a quasi-realtime system.

Everything runs in realtime, but it has turn-based mechanics underneath. You can do as little as hitting a button to attack or you can do as much as queing a sequence of attacks/feats for all of your characters to do.

You can basically have as much or as little involvement as you would like.

It is not an action game at all.

I'm sure someone else will expound more on this now, though. :)

There are options for people who want to play a hack 'n slash type of game, but there is also the option of pulling up your menu and selecting multiple attacks which can be qeued up. I prefer the fast and button mashing style, but they at least leave it up to you so you can have it your way.

I don't think that during any point of this game that you would be able to call it a button masher.

Even if you don't queue up sequences for your characters then you still won't be able to do things like button combos, repeatedly hitting a button to attack, etc.

Even if you just hit a button to attack it only actually attacks like every 3 seconds. :)

Sorry for anyone who thought that this was an action game. If you want they you need to check out the JA boards. ;)

Just kidding, stay here. :D

Sorry, I messed up. The fighting system is actually brilliantly designed. As I read, if the PC is using the flowing system without using the menus, everytime you use the attack button, the battle system (using the D20 ruleset) automatically rolls the dice for the PC as well as the target and calculates what the damage of the attack is. There are limits to how often you press the button (how long between strikes).

This fighting system is by far not a hack and slash. I just used that description to give him an idea of the style of play. You press a button, the currently selected attack is performed, permitting. Or you can use the menus to queue up attacks.

These guys pretty much nailed it. Most of the combat in the game will rely on the abilities of the PC and his NPC allies, not on the abilities of the player. A true RPG, if you will... I wouldn't really say that the combat system is like Final Fantasy though, there's a huge difference.

You might want to check out the demo of Neverwinter Nights, the latest RPG from Bioware(who are also coincidentally creating KotOR) to get a very light taste what combat might be like. Mind you, from what the developers have stated, the combat will look helluva a lot more epic than what you can see in NWN(although it looks nice in there), plus you have the ability to control your NPC allies. Also, note how the fighting scheme doesn't even come close to the Final Fantasy system(ie. no timebar, no "everyone-stands-neatly-in-a-line-waiting-their-turn", no random battles popping up out of nowhere)

You joined us from the Bioware forums. How could you not know this?

Read people. Don't just make comments. Read about the game.

Guys,i'm asking theses questions cause i got confused for a minute.I saw KOTOR footage, saw that 'menu screen' pop up and i wasn;t sure why.I never played this neverwinter nights, sorry.I'm not used to playing PC games, thats why I made reference to Devil May cry and Final Fantasy.I'm now trying out PC games,so please don't hold that against me.

I like the Final fantasy games for the great CGI movies and stuff.I hate standing still waiting for a silly menu option to ask me to attack/spell/run.I like games like DMC where you can break out combos and super moves(running off walls, air attacks)or games like MGS 1&2,i loved the plot, the stealth, the action.I'm looking forward to this game,to the point of almost going to the Sith and killing people for it-lol.I'd just hate to get this to be let down.

Someone told me,KOTOR was like Castlevania-symphony of the night(psx2)-where you can 'hack/slash' but it has RPG elements and menu attacks. Is this true?? That other forum, isn't half as good as this one.You guys rock!!

Although I had yet to hear of this Castlevania game, I quickly checked up what it was about... although I could only find references to a Castlevania-Symphony of the night game for the Playstation 1, I believe that I can almost honestly say that KotOR is nothing like it.

Really, it is nothing more than a combat system that is used in a PnP system. You choose whom your character will attack, what weapon he will use, and mayhaps if he uses a special power of a sort, but in the end, the PC initiates the attack, and you do not. I really recommend that you check out the Neverwinter Demo to get a taste of what the combat could... I provided you with a link to the demo above, if you have the connection, I recommend you download it to get a taste.

It's cool TheChosen one.

The excitement you show for this game is something we all share.

Don't worry. I've gotten to the point where I don't really want any more questions answered I'm just waiting for the game. :)

We're kind of friendlier here than the patrons at the official orums.

I feel sorry for the Devs for having to deal with the idiots.

To be honest, I'm still getting the feeling that some people are comparing the system to Final Fantasy, which it is not. Really, you won't have the team allies all lining up one one side, with the Sith troopers neatly lined up at the other side. A menu won't pop up after waiting a few second with "Attack-Force-Item-retreat"... however, you won't move your character around by yourself whilst holding the left mouse button and pressing three various buttons to initiate some "kewl"-looking saber combo(we have Jedi Academy for that).

Once more, I'd recommend to check out the NWN demo to get a better perspective on the combat system.

for the people who are saying,

I share my dislike with TheChosen one about the menu-driven saber combat.I really would appreciate it if this RPG would be more action-based.

I mean,I don't like slow paced action of turn based.

Why are so here, on the KOTOR boards, if you dislike the type of game?

I was referring to people who want an FPS combat system and are dissapointed with the RPG style. If they dislike it....oh well, whatever.....

Ok,riddle me this.Other then this neverwinter game what else does KOTOR resemble??I mean with all the home console systems, past&present, theres gotta be at least one.Sorry about the castlevania mistake,it is ps1..oops.

Another game other than NWN... let's see, I would certainly think of the more 'traditional' RPGs that have been released for the PC over the years, and not for the consoles. One thing's for certain, KotOR won't really resemble one of those Final Fantasy games(which are extremely cool games in their own rights) or that fabled Fable game.

I think that if you want to try a different RPG that might resemble KotOR somewhat, I'd say the Baldur's Gate series, the Fallout series, Planescape Torment(note to self, gotta finish this game), Vampire the Masquerade, and various other CRPGs that were released for the PC over the years. Now, if you wanted home console examples, then I can't think off one at the moment... someone else, maybe?

This may or may not help, probably not help but meh

COMBAT - CONTROL

(Bob McCabe)

You see a hostile. He runs at you. You select him and tell your PC to attack. Your PC then enters into a cinematic battle where he attacks each round.

While your PC is not attacking, your round is filled up with feints and parries and dodges and swings, so it is almost as if there are no rounds at all; your player is always engaged in that combat, and never stops to wait for his next attack.

At any time, you can bring up the combat menus and pick from a list of feats, or Force powers, or choose to use an item. You will use that feat or Force power or item once, and then return to attacking normally.

However, you may enter actions in repeatedly, and those actions will queue - with you performing one each time you get a round to attack in. So you might enter three actions during one round. The first action would take place during that round, while the other two would queue up for the next two rounds, respectively.

You may also do all of the above by pausing the game first, making your choices, and then unpausing the game to enjoy the beauty of combat.

As well, when a menu is opened up, the game slows down, as has been mentioned in other posts. I greatly enjoy watching the battles in slow-motion to take that cinematic experience one step further.

And, in addition to all of the above, there are multiple party members that you may control - to further enhance the strategy aspects. Switching between party members requires the press of a single button, and may be done while paused.

The NWN demo is a pretty good idea.

I really need to play PS: Torment..gah so many ppl keep telling me it is great! I let it slip through my fingers too many times before when I had the chance lol
