Yufster
PA or PVP??? For those of you who are not blessed with the knowledge of these magnificent sites... www.penny-arcade.com www.pvponline.com Myself, I prefer Penny Arcade by miles. And as people I prefer Gabe and Tycho (or Mike and Jerry) over Scott Kurtz, who I find to be sort of too opinionated and ... I don't know, I just think he thinks people care about his opinion on too many things. As the comics are, WOW to Scott for updated daily... demonic drawing powers indeed, but I prefer Gabes art and Tychos writing muchly. What do you think? Also post your favourite quotes from your favourite comic... if you can remember any. FAVOURITE PA QUOTES: "Somebody phone Guinness! I'm going from Zero to Drunk in 20 Dollars!" -Div "Scott Kurtz to online Cartoonists - **** YOU " - Newspaper Doctor to Tycho "These stab wounds are pretty deep " Gabe - "I try." "On a scale of one to ten, I am sooooo drunk." - Div Gabe on phone - "What's that again? What do you want me to do? I know you want me to suck something, but you cut out there at the end. I'm merely trying to avoid confusion. I don't want to suck the wrong thing inadvertently....... Oohhhh. A PENIS." Gabe- "Look at it like this; it's like a picnic, except there's no food and we're all going to die." (And my current favourite... ONI!) Boss - "We think you'll fit in great here, at EvilCorp. Basically, your job will be to clean and maintain the many boxes we keep here for no apparent reason. Man - "What was in the boxes again?" Boss -" Other, SMALLER boxes." Man - "If you don't mind my asking, why did the other janitor leave this job?" Boss - "Well, he didn't so much leave as he was 'shot three times in the face by a ninja woman with purple hair'. We think she might have been from the future."
Gabez
I'd have to agree with you there, Yufster. Although to be honest I haven't really read PVP as much as I have on PA. But PA still 0wnz anything else.
murta
You're both very stupid if you haven't read CTRL-ALT-DEL, so much funnier than either of them First one, keep clickng the right arrow until you're up to date http://ctrlaltdel-online.com/archives.php?date=20021023 (but out of those 2 I prefer PA)
Yufster
Ha, I thought you were tricking me into rebooting. OMG That comic is good LMAO but PA rules
murta
PA does rock but they'd done way too many crappy ones, CTRL-ALT-DEL always makes me piss ma pants (Btw I updated the link in the first post 'cos I didn't link to the first comic on there)
murta
It really does get funnier as it goes along, I'm re-reading them all atm, will post some of my favourites as I go through:

Yufster
I think CtrlAltDel is a tiny bit of a rip off... They have the two main characters, the Childish guy (Gabe) and the sensible guy (tycho)... The computer scene is tooooo similar.... Ethan at the computer and Lucas behind him, the picture on the wall They use the same lighting techniques I saw a few of the same jokes obviously reworked etc.,etc., Don't get me wrong, I think it's great, and it became less dependant on PA in the more recent strips, but it's obviously gotten a LOT of influence from Mike and Jerry. Mike and Jerry started something original, something that hadn't been done (much) and created their own unique character base and everything so.... I'll go with PA until I die. EDIT: Oh yeah that reminds me the sofa scene is too much like PAs.... and for ****S SAKE DON'T POST THE ENTIRE COMICS UP THERE SOME OF US HAVE DIALUP! murta
Well if you read the first ones, they do play off the similarities. Most video game based comics involve 2 guys, a couch and a crap load of console/PC/movie/current affair jokes. CTRL-ALT-DEL do it so much better than Penny Arcade, who've been inconsistent at best just lately
murta
Ok, I don't care if you have dial-up, get broadband or wait Irish girl. And of course it's gonna be familiar, where the **** do you want them to play their consoles, on top of the frickin Taj Mahal sitting on beer crates? Jesus Christ, just admit that it's better than PA, they don't rip anything off, they just can't avoid similarities, because it draws from real-life... Yufster
Right, bitch First off, I'm not irish, I'm english. Second, just because you want to whore your favourite comic, doesn't mean I want to wait goddamn ages for them to load up, because I don't like them as much as you might. Thirdly, I'm simply saying that the comic quite clearly is heavily influenced by PA, but I don't find the humour as funny. Fourthly, most gaming web comics are not that similiar. Player vs Player has completely different art style, characters and plots. That other one, life of riley, has some bizzare frikkin art and a wierd plot, so I never read it, but it's not at all the same. The scenes that are similar are from the same angle, with the appropiate characters in the appropiate positions, with the same style and even the same 'spotlighting' effect as used in many earlier PA strips. I'm not saying it's bad that the comic uses this because every artist has an influence. I'm just saying it's extremely noticeable. FIFTHLY, is real life like that at all? No. Unless you're a particularly sad person, which I'm SURE you're not. and LASTLY, I will not admit it's better than PA. Why don't you admit PA is better than CtrlAltDel? Because it's your opinion that it's not. Might want to be a bit more careful flaunting that charming attitude of yours.
murta
Well you've hardly presented yourself as a model member yourself and you might want to remember that I can ban your ass the second you step out of line. If I'm sad for having some similar gaming experiences and every-day life as these web comics, then you're even sadder for idolising them. How is CTRL-ALT-DEL's style similar? Because they're both in colour? OMG! CAD is shaded. It's characters are fictional (unlike PA, who loosely based their main characters on themselves, despite being fat and/or ugly in reality). CAD has a girl living upstairs as a love interest, a room-mate, penguin, floating bottle of vodka and that's it. None of that is even remotely similar to PA. Just because they both have 2 guys who sit on a sofa and play video games. Who doesn't do that? PA actually took alot of influences from CADs style of humour after they realised that they were getting unfunny. I'm pretty sure I've been reading both comics longer than you, since I've read them both from their respective starts and about the time that CAD came around, PA was really dropping in quality If you expect everyone to be nice to you, why not try lightening up yourself, 'cos if you wanna pointlessly argue, you picked the wrong guy to do it with
Yufster
Oh dear oh dear oh dear. Threatening to ban me for stepping out of line is hardly going to win you an argument. I was absolutely fine until you started posting pictures up on this thread and intended to post more. Unfortunately, living in Ireland, where no broadband is available, I can't just "get broadband" so I have to "wait" which is something I don't like to have to do just because somebody has no thought for other people. Another thing is that the elements of the comic you mentioned in your post just there are elements that came later in the strips. As I said before, the earlier strips are those that take too much from PA. You appear to be trying to MAKE people like CAD better? Don't get so uptight, deary, each to his or her own and all that. Your attitude isn't going to make people like it better. And why on earth did you call me "irish girl" and Gabe and Tycho "Fat and/or ugly"? Was there a particular point you're trying to make? is the artist of CAD particularly good looking? Or are YOU the respective artist of CAD and that's why you're getting soooooo cross? Tut tut. murta
I wasn't gonna post an more pics, that would be pointless, because if I wanted to post all the good CAD pics it would take forever. You weren't fine until I posted the pics, you've made sarcastic and provokative posts to a number of members. Maybe the earlier strips from each of the comics resemble each other because they were both very simple and before the artists have developed a unique style? I'm not trying to make anyone like CAD better, it rocks and they'll like it if they read enough of them, I'm just pointing out the stupidity of a couple of your points, which basically involved practically unavoidable similarities. I called you Irish girl because I wanted to annoy you and I'm cool. Gabe and Thyco's real-life appearance wouldn't bother me but their in-strip characters and their girlfriends kinda glamourises their life, which is pretty lame IMO. I don't care if you have to wait for 2 pics to load, big deal, just stop them from loading. Also, I'm not 'threatening' you with a banning for the purpose of argument, I'm doing it because of your attitude. If you had been a bit more civil and polite in your earlier posts in this threat, I wouldn't have brought it up, I'd have just destroyed your weak-ass argument in various other ways
Yufster
"It really does get funnier as it goes along, I'm re-reading them all atm, will post some of my favourites as I go through:" Sounded to me like you were going to post more. Besides, a hyperlink would have been more appropiate would it not? you've made sarcastic and provokative posts to a number of members. Ha ha ha. Mek. I'm just pointing out the stupidity of a couple of your points, which basically involved practically unavoidable similarities. Which points and which similarities? There's nothing WRONG with being influenced by other artists, I just noticed it was particularly STRONG IN THE EARLY STRIPS Gabe and Thyco's real-life appearance wouldn't bother me but their in-strip characters and their girlfriends kinda glamourises their life, which is pretty lame IMO. How do they glamourise their lifestyle, exactly, in a way that CAD does not? I don't care if you have to wait for 2 pics to load You lovely little person, you. I'd have just destroyed your weak-ass argument in various other ways Go on then. I'd LOVE to see it. You're such a wonderful, polite, clever person. With really strong points. And I've never known ANYBODY show as much COOLNESS when attempting to insult a persons nationality of which they are not. That's possibly the coolest thing ever. You're funny. I called you Irish girl because I wanted to annoy you and I'm cool. Ha ha ha!!!!!!! Oh well that says it all. Never mind, you poor thing. Seeing as you're super moderator, why don't you close this thread that has been wonderfully spoiled? Be a deary. You're right. Insulting nationality is soo cool. murta
1) I was originally going to post more, then I decided not to, so both 'contradicting' posts are valid b) My family's Irish, it was a joke, but I am cool 4) Not just Mek, I don't read the forums that often but I've seen you say needless things to Natty for one and you constantly spam crap a) The thread hasn't been spoiled at all, it wasn't particularly good in the first place and it was a nice civil discussion until you made the first insultive post (always about idea to piss me off) b) A hyperlink would be an alternative, but since most people here have broadband I'd prefer to ram the strips down their throats
Yufster
Natty? I like Natty. We were joking. Jesus christ almighty. Ask her. The ONLY person I don't like here is Mek. That includes you. Mek is literally the ONLY PERSON I DON'T LIKE, and I don't even hate him. I just always disagree with him. Sure, I admit I often spam crap, but I don't do it to up my post count or intentionally hurt people or whatever, I do it because I'm not a very serious person and if I see an opportunity to make a joke I'll take it. Generally I'll stay on topic or try to. And well, most people here have broadband, have a little consideration for those who don't. My first 'insulting' post was not in any way intended to be hostile, you misinterpreted it completely. Of course, being 'Irish Girl' my langauge isn't quite as reserved as that of 'English girls'. The only thing I was trying to convey was desperation at my goddamn ****ing modem. You're both very stupid if you haven't read CTRL-ALT-DEL, so much funnier than either of them Not saying that I interpreted your comment in such a way but just as easily as you assumed I was insulting you, I could have assumed you were insulting us. You were way to hasty to react.
murta
Maybe I was insulting you...but I didn't swear or shout if I was I just thought the "I guess you had to be there" comment in Natty's spider killing thread was a little nasty and un-needed, that's all
Yufster
How was that nasty?! whenever somebody tells you a story that they think is hilarious but in actual fact isn't, it's generally not because they have a crappy sense of humour but because you had to be there for it to be funny. I didn't think the story was funny but I knew it was probably hilarious if you were there, watching her try to kill the freaking spider. You weren't insulting me at all and I wasn't (at least I wasn't trying) to insult you until you said the whole "Irish girl, I don't care, get broadband or wait." You see the thing is I don't think you realize just exactly WHAT a nuisance it is when people with broadband do things like post pictures up on threads etc.,. It might sound like I'm being ridiculous and petty but it is, in reality, a big issue when you're on a crap 45kbps connection (It's supposed to be 56k but hey, it's ireland)
murta
I'm well aware what it's like, I put up with dialup for about 6 years before broadband came around. I used to download huge amounts of crap by running my connection 24/7 and I'd just go and bake a cake or jack off over pictures of Cherie Blair if I was waiting for pages to load
Yufster
At least you bastards got flatrate. I used to be able to do that until I got kicked of irelands ONE AND ONLY FLAT RATE SERVICE for, ahem, USING IT TOO MUCH. Honestly, they sent me a letter saying, "We are removing you from our service as you're HOGGING THE GODDAMN LINE." Well not that bad but still. Then UTV came along, it's flat rate, alright connection, but only 150 hours free, which I can easily go over and frequently do because I stay on all night downloading stuff. As for Cherie Blair... whatever turns you on. Personally, Bill Gates can corrupt me any time... He can put a bug in my system... he can program ME what to do, uh, he can give me money, uh....
