Jah Warrior
posh:- p.o.s.h. From colonial times, when brits went out to india etc, the rich (posh) folk would pa6y extra to be on the port side of the ship on the way out due to it being in the shade, and pay extra to be on the starboard side on the way home, hence:- Port Out Starboard Home = POSH. now spill the beans my dansk compadré
C'jais
Hehehehe.... I can see why that doesn't jive so well with having a "posh-gene", unless brits were predisposed for being rich. Or having weird sailing habits. Anyway, annihilation comes from the latin "nihil", meaning nothing. It means to "make into nothing", as I recall. It's now that I'd really like to get my hands on my uncle's dictionary of word origins. Fun reading, actually.
Jah Warrior
if you like words and word origins check out cockney rhyming slang it rocks. So funny and yet used in daily life. (at least in london) btw knew about anihilation, or at least i know a little latin and it makes sense to me. Its surprising how much of an influence latin as been on modern language. With a bit of Greek thrown in for good measure. It's weird how many words are so damn similar, yet sound as if they've got nothing to do with each other. Not trying to piss in your cornflakes or anything, but why? Chatting is allowed in the Swamp per forum rules. We are not causing any trouble. We are not preventing anyone from having fun. It's not our fault if not many people post tonight. Whad'ya say?

[/b] Well surprisingly English's closest match is German>?!!!?!? hard to believe but true, I think its more to do with the structure than the sound though. Cockney rhyming slang..... LOLOLOLOL ok heres the basics that most brits should know:- Apples & Pears = stairs Plates of meat = feet Allan Whickers = Nickers (womens underwear) I'll leave it at that for now as most are rather rude heheh... I'll find you a link mate.

C'jais
The trick is that you're following rules for the sake of following rules. Again, we didn't disturb, offend, or spam just to gain posts or points. We chatted, let the discussion flow. We were even able to educate each other and swamp once or twice. I'm not gonna play the victim here (I'll gladly bow out if you want me to), but I'd recommend you to look at how the mods handle "spam". This wasn't spam. Spam is saying yes or no or "lol" as the only thing in your post. We were just having fun, and did not cause trouble in any way. This is following rules for the sake of following rules. So what if a thread gets derailed in the attempt to liven the place up and have a good-natured banter? Does anyone in here object to that? If someone were to come along and get back on topic, so would we. There's no problem, except for how mods can get a little too zealous in making sure everyone's enjoying themselves. Once again, I'm reminded of how RSN is somehow able to get away with non-topic chatter in almost every damn thread, while this place is different. Are there different rules at the two forums? I appreciate your effort, but it'd be easier if you didn't try so hard.

Well, this is not RSN, there is a hotel for private chats among two peoples, and I would appreciate it, if you would stop making such an issue out of it. Jah Warrior
whats a teh hotels? i'm in england and jais is in denmark and the airfare would cost a bomb. not to mention paying for the room, i like you jais, but not enough to rent a hotel room withyou well, thast assuming you are a guy, if you're a gal then thats different;)
Darth Groovy
Jah, go here. You buy the room and get a key in the store. You take your points, and spend them, and then you can set up a private chat area similar to the one you posted here, and nobody else can see it, unless you give them the key. Jah Warrior
lol groovy, i read yer pm anyways i've always "fondly" thought of the swamp as a place for all things spammy and silly, the place just wouldnt be the same without it. Conversations wander and meander and its all good fun, people rarely talk about one thing alone and converstaions wander on many topics, not through decision, its just the nature of conversing. End of the day - you're the boss so we must abide by the rules, and i apologize for the unintentional hijacking. anyway - on topic:- Did you know that the red hair gene is more widely found on the east coast of england than the west!?!?! guess why.... (answers on a postcard plz)
munik
Why are redheads called ginger? I don't think ginger has red flowers, or any red in it. Not even the root, I'm pretty sure. Jah, I've also heard that about posh. It doesn't make sense though. Not sure where the Brits are coming from, but I'm assuming it's somewhere north of India. So wouldn't that make the boat trip take at least a day, right? So how does riding on the eastern side keep you in the shade? You'd catch the morning sun both ways. In fact, it doesn't matter which side you are on, if the trip took at least a day you'd always catch the sun at some point. Unless you switched cabins at midday. Now that I think of it, english people lived in south africa, right? That might make sense then, if they left in the morning both on the way out and back. But I thougt travel by boat took quite some time using the wind. Maybe if you can help me out here I'll tell you about how another common word, albeit a crude one, came into being as an acronym used during boat travel.
