Lunatic Jedi
I don't plan for it to be capable of destroying an entire planet, but still capable of some nasty destruction.
Zoom Rabbit
Back when they made the original death star for Star Wars, they used pre-fabricated styrene cut-outs that they molded in a limited number of configurations, but that they could arrange in such a way as to give the appearance of unlimited detail. They literally filled a studio with these little things on the floor, and filmed the spaceships dogfighting over it. I don't think they used model battleship parts to build the death star. Ever look at the price of a model kit? Now think about filling a sound stage with them... There is a toy death star, but it's small (about 3" across.) It came in one of the micromachines packs, and looks convincing if you hang it in the corner of the ceiling well behind your bigger scale models. Another way to get a toy death star would be to take gray spray paint to a basketball. No? Oh, well...

Kurgan
I posted this subject in another forum (outside of LFN) and somebody was saying I should use 10 cm for the action figure instead (the resulting death star toy would still be huge). According to the guys who designed the models for the Death Star II in 'Return of the Jedi,' it was intended to be "over 500 miles long" Imagine what a "toy" that would make! ; )

For all we know the G. Luc posse could have been given a good deal on toy parts. We are talking the late 70s after all, where battleships weren't so pricey (or were they?). One thing is for certain, the battleship would cost nearly the same as... oh say a can of Rustoleum or Krypton can of spray paint. Since they wanted everything grey (because grey is cool) they could save cost by buying a grey toy with lots of little guns and S$&%t all over it. Eliminate hours of pain-staking paint detailing. What better toy than a model destroyer or carrier? Hmmmm? Hmmmmmmmmmm? Think about it (or don't I don't care, lol).
Zoom Rabbit
The styrene cut-outs were molded in gray plastic. This can be read about in The Art of Star Wars. I have no idea if they still print it...it came out in the early eighties.
