How Myst - almost - killed traditional, classic adventures

the guy who wrote that Blade Runner review was probably confusing real-time gameplay and real-time graphics, too. :)

 

UAKM came out in 1996, so that seems like it'd have been the first. Could be that GK3 always gets the credit because it was Sierra's first (only) 3D adventure... and Sierra had dominated the genre for so long.... And since GK3 was the last adventure Sierra made, we can obviously draw the conclusion that it was 3D technology that killed the adventure genre... :D

i have played GK3... great game! i didn't realize it was in real-time until i was halfway through and read it in a review. i really need to load it up again and see what else is lurking around corners...

 

i just traded someone for The Last Express, really looking forward to trying it out... but TLE wasn't even the first adventure with real-time gameplay. i'd venture to say that was King's Quest 3. You had that timer at the top of the screen and the wizard showed up every 30 minutes to zap you if you were breaking his rules. King's Quest 4 did a beautiful job of it too, with a day/night cycle and every minute of the player's time equalling something like 12 minutes in the gameworld.

The other genres have been innovating for years, its about time this genre does again.
