  1. Then, exiting the stump again will take you to Curse.
  2. While I don't like Star Wars, I appriciate Star Wars references are part of Monkey Island's identity. The games have always referenced the latest in Star Wars. Therefore, I'm sure we can all agree that Baby Yoda needs to be added to the game.
  3. To be honest, not a big Star Wars fan, so I didn't know these wrinkles. You got me. Wow an unpopular opinion from me, finally. I don't like Star Wars. For no reason either, its just not for me. I have only seen the original trilogy, (and The Phantom Menace). And from those, it seemed very clear. But yeah, whoops. My bad. I didn't know. Sorry.
  4. And I'm a fan of Final Fantasy VII. Where people will fierce debate if Cloud loves Tifa or Aerith. Aerith. One of the most famous videogame deaths of all time, very much dies right in the middle of the story, Aerith. Anyway it's been happening since 1997. Aww, as old as CMI arguments. Canon is super clear. Han loves Leia, Sora loves Kairi, Bella loves Edward, and Cloud can never be with Aerith. Anything other is just fan work, which is fine. . What makes Guybrush and Elaine different and interesting is Ron Gilbert's statements that he wouldn't have put the pair together in his Monkey Island 3a. So what do we make of this? Is Ron Gilbert the authority on his own characters, and we must listen to him? Or are the other writers contributions important, and we must consider them authoritative because of their position as official sequels? Or is every post-Gilbert game an entertaining reimagined spin-off, a fun what-if but not a "true" Monkey Island? People have argued all of these and more. These are the kinds of arguments have some closure coming in RTMI. But people will still be arguing about Guybrush and Elaine after RTMI. I know. Despite any canon closure, people will still argue about this. Just like every other pairing here. But it'll be more in what-ifs and fanfiction territory now. Really, it would be funny if RTMI gave us even more to argue about regarding Guybrush and Elaine as a couple. Imagine
  5. Yeah fair enough lol. I know the extremely Monkey Island fans have discussed if Guybrush and Elaine should be together A Lot. Its a debate that's been happening online since... I dunno, the release of MI2? Or CMI? Like, twenty years at minimum, over thirty at max. Christ almighty everyone (including me). But when it comes to more a casual majority of fans, people liking the couple is the vibe I get. But there's no stats to prove anything so I am just making shit up. You're right. GOD we are so close to RTMI ending this. Ship wars never truly end, but at least we can get canonical closure.
  6. This is everything I always dreamed of Ron Gilbert's Monkey Island being.
  7. Liking Guybrush and Elaine as a romantic couple is the popular opinion. And I share the popular opinion. I like the partnership. Its true the couple did get together on a bit of a retcon. I would understand a Monkey 3a which kept them separated. But I can't see them apart up in a Monkey 6. Not after all the couple has been through together. Does that make sense? Although if they divorced but remained good friends who loved each other, I could enjoy that. I'm also a big marriage skeptic. And hey. Anythings fine for the two as long as the story is interesting. I am really interested to see how the two work in RTMI, no matter how they work. The only thing they could do wrong is to damsel Elaine again. That would be bad. Please, I'm so sick of her being damselled. It stopped being cute after MI1. I don't like a large bulk of Elaine's screentime being "subversion of a trope". Especially because subverting the trope came to mean her getting damselled a lot, which defeats the point. There's more to Elaine, and I want to see that more, more. Not unpopular opinions, sorry. No. Thank YOU for writing it. I enjoyed reading it a lot.
  8. I'm memeing don't take this too seriously lol
  9. I'm hoping for the peg leg #teampegleg
  10. Hope he drops the big retcon and names the file Guy.exe
  11. the secret of geek point is that its inside all of us
  12. Ah, wow, cool. That must be really exciting. Yeah, I get it. This all isn't stuff I'd say to his face. I'm not directing these posts and comments personally at Rexbox at all. I couldn't, I don't think he's reading these posts (in the low chance he is: Hi). If I could talk to Rexbox personally about the art of ReMI, I wouldn't do it like that at all. The old fanart just came up and I gave my thoughts. That's it. He sounds like he would be really fun to talk about art with, from your description.
  13. Fair enough if you like the old piece. It's not bad. And I'm sorry if my response was also aggressive. I don't want to be needlessly harsh on the art. I also won't be positive just for the sake of positivity. It just turns out I genuinely don't have much bad to say about the art. I'm one of the people who started off not hot on it, but I'm enjoying it more and more and keeping my mind open. A lot of people have compared this debacle to the Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker art style debate. I wasn't Online at that time, so I cant speak to those flame wars. But I was also a tween who had loved Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I wanted Link to look badass, of course I did. To cut a long story short, I learned a life lesson about being wrong about art. And it really is a life lesson, if I'm still applying it twenty years later. Wowie.
  14. Yeah, I agree. I did say the difference came from both experience, and working in a professional capacity. Its not just artistic improvements, its that the new design is official work and not fanart. The design has to do different things, its is for a different purpose. Rexbox is extremely talented, even in his projects from over a decade ago. LittleBigPlanet is a gorgeous game. Tearaway is stunning. I would agree. I still think there's clear artistic growth throughout his work, but that doesn't make the old stuff bad. I don't think he didn't know how to show emotion in the past. I already acknowledged that it was fine for the face of the old fanart to not be capable of showing many emotions. I called it "fine for a one-off artwork". I would think some looking back and reimagining the old piece was involved. Its a fair guess that the piece landed him this job, to a degree. It feels like the fanart would have been discussed. But I also can't speculate about if that actually happened or not, what was going on in anyone's head, or what exactly happened behind the scenes there. It just seems like a likely scenario to me. I also don't think it was a linier "my old work sucked and I must fix it lol" design process or something (i dont think anything like this was thought or said, simplified for example purposes, yadda yadda). The old portrait would have shortcomings if used as the final design in a new MI game. Obviously. And as I outlined. But its a fine piece of fanart. And the new, official design is so good it's so good. Its such a huge improvement.
  15. Rexbox's old Guybrush design was fine as a piece of fanart, don't get me wrong. There's a lot to like about it. I don't want to be seen as going hard on fanartists. But - The expression is extremely zonked. He's got no chin, his eyes are too far apart. The face doesn't look like it could show a lot of different emotions, its built to show This extremely goofy One. Fine for a one-off artwork but not OK for a proper protagonist design. - The ponytail doesn't read as a ponytail. It looks like he's just got long hair in the back, like a mullet. - I know a focus on using simple shapes is a part of the art style, but many of the key shapes here are uninteresting squares. Square is a good shape, but maybe not when its this plain? Yet with a decade of experience and working in a professional capacity, all those issues were fixed! Its such a huge improvement. This is praise, but presented in such a critical way whoops.
  16. quick Guylead pencilsketch And a dead YTMND fad, with new ReMI visuals: https://stansells2022.ytmnd.com/
  17. This is obsessing over little details, but I'm loving Guybrush's default expression. At first, I read it as a bit pensive and uncertain. But now I'm reading it as more quizzical, dazed, or resigned. It is a very netural face and would be made to be read in a number of ways. And these are all fitting emotions for Guybrush. And I like it. Haha reading too much into a little eyebrow asymmetry.
  18. Just thinking about the possibilities here makes really wish there was a way to free the franchise from the Disney Vault forever. If its going to be concluding, why not? Sadly, Disney Even if the ending was a bizzare screw the audience MI2 style one, I would still think it would be okay. Weird and unsatisfying could be the right note to end on. We'll have to see what happens. Of course the ending could still be outright bad for the wrong reasons. Gotta wait and see etc. But yeah. Ending MI before the franchise rot sets in would be great. This doesn't contradict what I just said to KestrelPi. I would want a finished MI series to be given over to remix culture, ideally. Remix culture does some weird shit but it doesn't create things that could be described as franchise rot in my experience. I hope this makes sense. Sadly, that's never going to happen because Disney
  19. I'm so sorry that I brought the graphics discussion back, I just wanted to talk about making peace with this being the final entry in the series. 😭😭 Although this is some really beautiful praise and I agree.
  20. I'm glad to see people getting used to and enjoying the art style. Speaking of getting used to things, I'm also beginning to look forward to the fact that this will probably be the last Monkey Island game. It was hard to see the official website call ReMI "The exciting conclusion" at first. But considering all the franchise has been through, I'm starting to get excited that the story gets to have a real ending. Its always sad to see something go, of course. Since I've only been with the series since TOMI, I can't imagine how somebody who's been there the whole 30+ years feels. But there's good reasons why no series should last forever. I don't know if other people are also coming around on this, but I am.
  21. That was the first game by Telltale that I played! I was really into Homestar Runner at the time, naturally. I played it on the Wii, and played each episode over and over. Its because of Strong Bad that I'm even into Monkey Island and the old Lucasarts adventures lol. Which is fair enough, really. Even the web cartoon was full of adventure game references and love and it even had its own short adventure game (Peasents quest). I did do a rematch of SBCG4AP a few years ago on YouTube. Unfortunately, it has a slow beginning and takes a few episodes to hit its stride. Didn't all Telltale games at the time. But its full of comedic convoluted plots which I love. The ending is Epic. Translating the 2D characters into 3D models looks jank on some characters and that never goes away, but its fine. It holds. It still makes me smile.
  22. it would be an interesting experience to walk THAT Plank.
  23. I think all the MI games have a really Gen X attitude and sense of humour, actually. They each stress different parts of the Gen X outlook, but its always there. It makes sense, since most of the writers throughout the years have been Gen X or are Boomers on the cusp of Gen X. I think many gen X-ers are also changing with the new generations, to see their past apathetic nihilism as a failure in their attitudes. What a gen x-er is and believes isn't set in stone. And then we have gen y and gen z Doomers, young people who are consumed by apathy. Generation theory is messy stuff. I'm not worried about this. And its because the game is willing to try new things that I'm not worried. The games have always made pop-culture jokes about contemporary trends, so I do expect those. They made a joke about NFTs on the ReMI teaser site. And while I still hope the NFT thing was just a joke for the site, I don't mind if ReMI makes a few remarks about the fortnites and the tiktoks or whatever. But I would be very shocked and disappointed if there was cruelty. There were never any good old days of pirating in the MI series. In every game, there's been problems in pirate society. I'm trusting ReMI to be smart enough to know this. But I get where you're coming from.
  24. What if Winslow never comes home from Poker Night at the Inventory 😭😭
