Have any of you ever walked by a new building and wondered what was once there before it was built? Have you ever walked through neighborhods with old buildings and wondered what life was like back then? I sometimes wonder that myself when walking through a city like Boston, a city rich with history. GUNNER Posted September 22, 2003 Share Posted September 22, 2003 I do all the time. I live in the same neighborhood now that I grew up in. I am now 37 years old and the change is unreal. On the street over from mine when I grew up there was some old trails we rode our bikes on and well as motorcycles. I could get lost back there, the trails went on for ever and it was really dark because it was totally covered in thick trees. At least 3-04 times a week we went riding back there.. Now all thr trees have been leveled by bull dozers and there is no sign of what was once there. We also had thick trees on the main road that lead to our house, the yhave now gave way for an Indian casino and bingo hall. and a small strip mall. The neighborhood that I live in right now used to be a gravel pit when I was a kid. I was on the side of a hill aon an old 2 lane road. Now it is filled with over 200 homes and roads. On the far end of town we have one of the last drive-in movie theaters in the northwest. The city talks about tearing it down so they can build a 4 lane road so people can get from up on the hill to the valley freeway. They managed to put the road in and leave the drive-in alone....so far. I went to these drive-in when I was not even 5 years old. Early 1970s... I can remember seeing the Aristicats and other Disney movies there. We played on the swings and teeter-totter down under the screen before the start of the movie. Then we would pile into the back of our station wagon for the show. In highschool we went every thursday night as it was only $5 for a car load. Even today it is only $5 a head for 2 shows. Me and the wife try to go at least 2-3 times a summer as we know that it is only a matter of time before they are gone.. edlib Posted September 22, 2003 Share Posted September 22, 2003 I grew up in and around Plymouth, MA. and I can hardly recognize some of the nieghborhoods when I go back for a visit... and of all the places I know it has changed the least! The Historical Society keeps a tight grip on controlling all development in that area, but even still it has changed a lot. BTW: The Boston links were great, Phil... Ray Jones Posted September 22, 2003 Share Posted September 22, 2003 i grew up in the gdr.. that country doesnt even exist anymore.. the good thing about it is.. the bad things are gone! the bad thing is.. the good things are gone too.. and my old hood seems to be gone completely although some of my old grafittis are still there. but if you walk through the streets you just see empty blocks/flats .. and it happened in only 5 years .. anyways.. its sad but life whats going on and perhabs the meaning of "getting old(er)" new things happen guys there is a lot of work to do.. the future is build on the present which is connected to the past.. (hey.. freaky.. isnt it?) errmm and i rather have my sony flatscreen tv then the one my grandma used to have .. i mean i had to wait half an hour til there was a picture on the screen .. plus VIVE LA LEGO ROBOTICS INVENTION SYSTEM *ehem* i would have died for it when i was a child.. :D Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
