Hitting back

Ok, so for some reason, over the past week, my computer has been infested with the most offensive browser hijacker I have ever seen.

Essentially, it changes my homepage. It locks my homepage onto their website. Then, it grabs any website I type into the toolbar and redirects me to their website. Essentially, unless I use my favorites bar, I am stuck going to their website and only theirs.

I fix the problem using Spybot S&D, but it comes back. I've done virus checks, and it does nothing. Through Spybot S&D, I was able to see that they changed my registry! They changed it! Without my permission! I tried adjusting it back to default settings, but it keeps changing.

I now want to contact these people directly. I am tired of having to run Spybot every other time I sit at my computer. There is a small "uninstaller" on their site, but it doesn't work.

The website is http://www.smart-finder.biz. If anyone knows of any way to contact them, or has heard about them before, please reply or PM me. If this disgusting and invasive software continues to infiltrate my computer, I do intend on bringing legal action.

i typed "smart-finder, homepage" in google search and there was one site that had someone give a fix but I don't think I can link it because it has advertisements for porn and the advertisements are graphic. the page was on the first search page with avs in the title. is this message breaking any rules?

THere's probably another file in the windows folder that is embedded and is not removed when Adaware/Spybot does a sweep. This undetected file allows the software to reinstall on your computer.

I'd Google the spyware (in this case, it sounds like a malware/browser hijack), and see if any of the tech boards out there have any knowledge on how to beat the **** out of this one.

ahh the doctor has an answer!

:D

i had the same problem, i did.

first i changed my home page it was msn i changed it to yahoo, but thats not important! you can add another button to your desktop for your desired home page. but to absolutly solve the problem you need to put up a fire wall. but the new button thing will do the trick if you can't get a fire wall.

Good one, zoidburg, but some firewalls only protect you from the moment u have installed it. This would only work in the grace period u have right in between when you used Spybot and when the "virus" (though I think it's an active Trojan) comes back. Well, tell me what OS ur using, then I'll see what I can do about the issue, if indeed the bug has embedded itself into ur hard drive. Otherwise, can't help u here.

[ADD EDIT] In the meanwhile, get a blindfold, cuz ur going to c more graphic stuff if u cant solve the problem, from what u said

Have you tried to

Start Menu>Run>regedit

Then HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software

Delete anything that has anything with the virus/spyware to do.

I had to do that to reinstall NWN, and my brother had to do it to reset his Battle.net with correct gateways ;)
