ckcsaber
Battle Royale is a Japenese film released in 2000 about 42 High School students who are forced to kill each other on an uninhabitated island. Why are they being forced to kill each other you ask? Well, it seems as if the Japenese school children are revolting towards school and teachers in general, most likely due to a high intake of Dance Dance Revolution and Dragon Ball Z. So, of course, the Japenese Government is quick to solve this problem with their famed ingenuity. Their solution is BATTLE ROYALE. Have a randomly selected group of kids kill each other in a deadly game of kill or be killed. The winner is the last person standing, who is rewarded with freedom. Oh, did I forget to mention that each child has an explosive collar fastened around their neck if they "try to break the rules"? Yes, this is an unforgetable movie experiance. Jonathan Ross describes it as "Super Cool". If you need a slightly different movie to watch, with plenty of gore and a hillarious plot that will keep you laughing, watch this film. Here are some keywords describing the movie, thanks to imdb.com adolescent based-on-novel body-count castration crossbow decapitation desolate-island despair fascism game knife-through-the-neck knife maniac murder perky-announcer revenge school-uniform teenager unemployment young-love helicopter teen-suicide teenkill disturbing lighthouse poisoning anaesthetized axe bag beach bicycle binoculars bloody-body-of-child blood boat bullet-proof-vest bus child-killing-child child-murderess child-suicide computer-virus computer death flashback-sequence flask food gash-in-the-face guitar hand-grenade hanged-boy hanged-girl hanging island kitchen map mass-child-killing mass-murder photography poison pot-lid public-address-system rain school-class severed-head sickle stabbing stun-gun sword teacher throat-slitting umbrella violence hanged-child schoolgirl-uniform cookie explosion megaphone neck-ring running sea suicide teen tunnel video wiping-out-entire-class wound gun based-on-book uninhabited-island surreal exploding-car gore shot-in-the-arm shot-in-the-back shot-in-the-leg shot-in-the-neck shot-to-death stabbed-in-the-back stabbed-in-the-face japan Sounds great, right? Well the film is in Japenese, but luckily it does have subtitles which will add even more to the crazy sensless plot since we will get plenty of misinterpretations! All joking aside, this film's plot is a strecth, the acting is decent (mostly a bunch of kids), and the ending may leave you a little confused, but it makes a genuine attempt at being something more than a gore-fest. The movie tries to be thought provoking with a Lord of the Flies feeling, but in my opinion it fails miserably in this aspect because the plot is so far-fetched. Overall, it's a fun movie to watch. ckcsaber
Yes, it was a "bit" controversial. They took it out of theatres in Japan. I don't think it was officially released anywhere else...
TiE23
Originally posted by ckcsaber Yes, it was a "bit" controversial. Well duh, it wasn't exactly rated G for starters. And any movie that has anything to do with Schools and deaths are bound to be controversial. TiE

BawBag™
As controversial, violent and plain weird as the film was - I thought it was great: That chick who seduced the lads then brutally murdered them: class! The mind does boggle as to how Japanese film-maker's get their inspiration..... One thing that actually made me laugh in a nasty way: When the Teacher threw the knife and got that lass right between the eyes
El Sitherino
I LOVE THIS MOVIE! I even had a sig of it a while back. Kiriyama is by far one of the coolest bad guys i've ever seen (excluding maul and vader ) Just the cocky, careless attitude. Kawada is just awesome. I suggest you watch the second one too, not as good but fun none the less. ps: norikos is rather perty
ckcsaber
I heard about the second, but I think it'll just ruin what the first one has established. And Kiriyama is pretty tight. Just look at the suit man.

El Sitherino
actually the plot was based on the authors experience in ww2 when americans came into japan, basically japanese children were recruited by americans to do all sorts of things. He had to see his friends die and being killed off by eachother and there was just no real good reason.
