CortoCG
Chill out a bit, cuz even if you get the program, it will take time and patience to learn. Some use 3dsmax 4 or 5 to make models for Jedi Academy, and I use softimage xsi. There're no actually free programs to create models for this game. Reason
Okay I forgot that I am not allowed to use P2P programs anymore is there not a free trial I can get somewhere?
Mercenary
If you've never used the max environment before I recommend you get the lite version called gmax (it's free) first so you can learn and not waste any time when you download a 30 day trial of 3ds max 6. a lot of plugins don't work for 3ds max 6 so you might be SOL anyways but I'll provide you the links: gmax http://www.discreet.com/products/gmax/ 3ds max http://www4.discreet.com/3dsmax/
Scythe01
Another excellent program is milkshape 3D. I personally call it the gamers modelling software. Its has an incredible amount of game model exporters/importers and was designed as modelling software for games. There also seems to be a lot of tutorials for milkshape 3D (More than I have found for other programs), including many for Jedi Academy. Gmax is also great software, especially because it is free. milkshape 3D on the other hand does cost $25 to register. So if you are gonna just do a few models then just use the trial on 3DS MAX 6, milkshape or get gmax. If you are going to continue modelling then go for gmax or milkshape. 3DS MAX 6 is incredibly expensive. Milkshape can be found here http://www.swissquake.ch/chumbalum-soft/
Mercenary
Yeah, I recommend MilkShape too. It's a handy little program worth the $25. Can't finish player models with it yet, you'll have to wait til version 2.0 right now it's at 1.

Hindy
I would advise caution with switching between versions of 3ds max also, Im swapping between Max 4 & 6 atm due to tech difficulties with 4.2 on my pc. Anyway u have to import files made in 6 into 4.2. Im currently doing Princess Leia (images in showcase) and everytime i switch pcs i have to reweld the verts... Dunno why? they just come unstuck Hindy
