I saw Collateral yesterday, the thriller starring Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx.

 

Before we begin, might I say that this is NOT your derivative action/car chase movie. It's much more sophisticated, and the action takes up less than 3 % of the movie.

 

The beginning of the movie starts off well, and the character we are first introduced to is Jamie Foxx's character, Max.

 

Max's dialogue is brilliant, optimistic, and I saw alot of myself in him.

 

Not to be a spoiler throwing maniac, I'll try to leave out as much of the plot as possible.

 

Max is on his usual rounds, and then we see Tom Cruise, and you know it's gonna get good when Tom gets into the car.

 

The rest of the movie revolves around Max and Tom's character, Vincent, and their interactions with each other. Vincent alone brings plenty of laughs because of his quick wits.

 

Now, the only gripe about this movie I have, is that the plot was muddled at a few points, and supporting characters enter and leave so quickly you don't really get a chance to understand their roles, and there was a waste of character development on one person, because he pretty much useless.

 

The ending to the movie was great; however, it fell into the "will they make it in time" genre that so many of these movies resort to. It is beautifully executed, so it's not that big a deal.

 

Bottom line: see this movie. 8/10

Awesome. I had plans on seeing it, but my girlfriend doesn't want to so I have to wait till tomorrow when I'll go with my friends.

I like how Vincent decides not to kill Max at the end, made him

Vincent doesn't kill Max cause he's about to die. It's lowly of a man to kill someone after they've been beaten.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I listened to this review read by the author on NPR's Fresh Air the other day.

 

Even though Edelstein was very critical of Mann's work in Collateral, I was left with the desire to see the film based solely on the clips that Edelstein played, such as the one where Max complains "you just pushed a man out of a window," and Vincent replies, "he fell... 6 billion people in the world, and you're bent out of shape (or something like that) over 1 fat guy?"

 

I'll go see it. Edelstein didn't convince me... his review only made me more interested.

The one thing I agree with in that review(other than what was said about the action, and the action isn't important anyway) was the part about Jamie Foxx. He really brings this movie together. Him and Cruise are excellent at bringing witty responses of professionalism and dedication to work versus questionable morals/ethics of a man and his job.

What I meant was that my friends and I argued after the movie why Vincent didn't just reload after he ran out of ammo. He obviously had a clip. I said yeah, but he was mortally wounded. He realized that while trying to reload. They said that he should've shot at them anyway, but I said that Vincent realized he had already been mortally wounded, knew he wasn't gonna get paid, and he respected/liked Max enough to let him live anyway.

 

 

I also liked that Vincent keeps helping Max with some problems he has (Boss keeps walking over him, too shy with women, doesn't visit his mother, etc.)
