Problems using KOTOR Tool

I was attempting to learn how to use the kotor tool by changing the properties of an item (the genoharden blaster). I decided that it would be fun to give it the carbonite stream effect of a droids carbonite projector. I was using one of the several excellent tutorials on the subject, but encountered a problem I couldn't see addressed in any of them. I can extract the uti file and I can open it (using the open GFF file function in the pulldown menu). I can see the item properties in the item editor. I can open the tabbed properties. It opens into a small table. So far so good. When I double-click on one of the rows to edit it, a smaller panel opens titled 'Item Property Editor'. The problem is that panel doesn't seem to be as large as it should be. It has no add button, and doesn't even show all of the properties of the item. (the Param1, Param2 and Upgrade required pulldown boxes are about half the width of the Property Name, Subtype and Value boxes, and are obviously truncated on the right side.) I assume from what I have read that there should be an ADD or MODIFY button available, but I can't find any. Am I being dense in some way, or is this a known problem?

That sounds familiar to me... It looks like you have a display problem...I had that before too  . Try to play with your display settings. What screen resolution are you using?

Here's a few questions you could answer to help me track down the cause of your problem:

(1) Which operating system are you using (ex. Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 1) - get it by right clicking on "My Computer" and choosing properties from the menu.

(2) Which country is your version of Windows localized for? Non-US-English systems have had trouble in the past.

(3) On the Display Properties control panel, Appearance tab, what are the three popup menus set to? Have you customized anything using the Advanced button?

A hint to the underlying problem I see in the photo is that your system is drawing the popup menus much wider than they are designed to appear. They are defined as 232 x 21 but are being drawn as 293 x 24. Also, the fonts are being drawn larger than defined. I am posting a question about this behavior to the Microsoft public forums.

Hi there, not to rain on your parade, but you're not going to be able to turn a blaster into a carbonite projector. That requires a script to be fired, and weapons are not able to fire scripts. Only armbands and droid utility items can do such things.

MS Windows 2000

5.00.2195

Service Pack 4

US English

What 3 popup menus? I am sure I've customized some of these settings, but I did it so long ago I no longer remember exactly what i did. I'll go back to a default setting and see what that does...

Ah, well. It's as much to figure out how things work as much as anything else.

Interesting you can put it in an armband but not a weapon. Thanks for the info. I'd probably be butting my head against a wall, trying to figure out why THAT didn't work.

Also, until this is resolved, you can click on the % Chance of Appearance box, then press the Tab key once to move to the Update button, or twice to move to the cancel button.

That was one of the first things I tried, back this morning, when I still thought of myself as clever. It actually didn't work, but thanks for the thought. It's a possibility I misestimated the number of Tabs I needed to use, but I'm pretty sure I couldn't get the cursor to move into any of the truncated boxes at all.

Ok, I went to a different display scheme that I had never used before, in hopes that this would restore all the values to reasonablly decent defaults, and the result was the same as I posted in the picture. I then went in and decreased all the font sizes from 8 to 6 (the minimum, I believe), and tried again. Still the same. (grrr..)

I'm certainly willing to believe that I've changed something, somewhere that might affect this, but I'm now wondering where it might be. I've noticed that nothing I did seemed to change the size of the print in the item editor box, so maybe I just haven't found the right place yet. I'm going to keep trying. Thanks for all the people who've helped. (Especially you Fred - nothing like having the program's author helping you...)

I just figured out what was doing it (and tested my hypothesis.)

Nothing under the appearence tab under display settings worked, but under the settings tab, in the advanced section, I had the system font size set to large (125% size). As soon as I switched it to small, and rebooted the pc, the KOTOR tool displayed fine.

Thanks for all your help!

I don't have trouble per-se, only a question, do I need to register my Kotor Tool? I read in this forum that it is no longer necessary, but the pop-up comes out when I use it, and when I fill the info, the file that i'm supposed to mail isn't created. Do I wait out the 10 seconds and ignore the message, or do I need to do something else?

I just made Carth's head dissappear, yipee!! :p (I know it's dumb, but for a guy that discovered Kotor modding a week ago, and decided to get the tools two days ago, it feels cool) Thanks guys for the incredible work :clap2:

Until I read up on all the awsome tutorials and experiment a little, I'll just download your mods and tools and stare in wonder :eyes8:

Make sure you have the latest version of Kotor tool (donwload it from Fred's website) . If you installed it in the default directory, you can access it via your start menu > programs>kotor tool. There are no more registration requirements and no more 10 seconds wait :)
