Winning Streak

This afternoon in Manchester, Arsenal Football Club lost their first premierhip league match for 49 games after being defeated 2-0 by Manchester United (who, incidently had to cheat to get the job done). How does this compare with other sports in terms of unbeaten runs? any baseball/basketball/american football/etc teams done the same sort of thing?

if you cheat, are you not stripped of your win? maybe america is different like that ...

one of the manchester united players faked being fouled (or dived as it is known) to earn a penalty kick which is essentially a free shot at goal which is rarely missed. On video evidence the player that dived could be disciplined (highly unlikely though) however the penalty kick, the subsequent goal and the result of the match cannot be altered

they check it before the penalty (or whatever you call it) is taken?

If a penalty gets called or the a pass or something is ruled incomplete, the coach can dispute the call after the play is over. The refs and umps all watch it from every angle. If they rule it different after the dispute, the play is noted as complete or no penalty. If the call stands, the team that called the dispute looses a time out.

Thats NFL though.

But Man Utd should have had a penalty when C.Ronaldo was tackled in the box by A.Cole. Cole wasnt even near the ball!

The teams played equally well, but Man Utd deserved the three points. Is it true that some Arsenal players threw soup at Sir Alex after the game? If thats so it really pisses me of! Rio,Edu,G.Neville,Henry and Ruud should get some sort of ban or ticket for the different tackles made in the game. You just cant have that kind of behavior on the field.

Arsenal deserves credit for going 49 games without defeat but in the end we will all see that Man Utd wins;)

Glory Glory Man United! ;)

My 100th post:D

When you consider the two blatent red cards that should have been given to man utd players during the match not giving a penalty when youd already had one which should have amounted to nothing more than a booking for Rooney is a fairly minor event.

The situation that occurred with Cole and Ronaldo wouldnt even have happened had United not been in the lead at that time (same goes for the second goal) which they shouldnt have been, they hadnt done anything close to breaking down the Arsenal defence which is what amounts to deserving three points. A draw was the result that would have accurately described the way the game went, but because United couldnt get it done fairly birthday boy thought he'd take a little tumble.

Someone threw soup at Ferguson, nobody has said who yet. strong rumour is that it was Jens Lehmann (who incidently I would love to see dropped from the team after the panathinaikos fiasco) but he fiercely denies it. A disciplinary board meets on thursday to consider what punishment to give Nistleroy for stamping on Cole. A 3 match ban is apparently the most likely outcome.

I think we all agree the ref didnt do a good job. But it was obvious that Man Utd were the better team. Henry (presumed the best player in the world by many. Myself as well) wasnt even visible in the game as Rio Ferdinand had him covered like Stam did back in the days. Rio handeld the pressure of being captain with magnificent. P.Neville did a solid job in Roy Keanes position. I was afraid that the duels with Edu and Viera would be to much to handle for the youngest Neville, but he handled it great. Ronaldo proved his worth when he changed side and showed his skills against Lauren. A.Cole did a great job(btw)

Im against people "diving" inside the box, but Man Utd deserved a goal due to some great atacks, like the one after 10 minutes. Which Giggs should have but in the net. Arsenal did just as many bad things as United. Henry happend to "stumble" over Heinze after a situation. And Edu tackled Scholes horribly. It could have been the end of Scholes career.

In conclution, i think the different dirty situations on the field should be harsly struck down on by FA. I have no idea what happend after the game, but it seems very imature by grown up players like Lehman to throw soup at one of the most respected managers in the history. I think Arsenal was the better team in the first half but Man Utd was better in the second and deserved the win.

Did arsenal get any bans after last seasons match?

yeah, Keown, Lauren and Parlour I believe were all banned after last season.

The first half was very even so was the second half no side had the better of things at any point really.

I take issue with Henry "stumbling" because Henry generally does not dive. Pires is a cheating little sod sometimes and the same goes for Lauren but I can't remember the last time Henry dived.

I think Rio Ferdinands good performance was somewhat marred by the straight red card foul on Freddie Ljunberg (who was incidently, clear through on goal) which even he said he should have been sent off for.

I think Rio should have been booked, and a red card would probably scare the other players from doing some of the stuff they did. The ref would have set a good example. Henry almost never dives :) Something that earns him a lot of respect.

Can't wait until next match;) Roy Keane will be back on the midfield so we can probably expect some great duels between Keano and Viera :D

May the best team win the league;) and hopefully thats not Chelsea :lightning

if Arsenal do nothing else destroying united at highbury would make it a good season for me.

Had play been stopped for Ferdinands foul it had to be a red card, no doubt because (a) it was a professional foul and (b) Ljunberg was through on goal.

The argment continues today as Ruud Van Nistleroy must enter his plea in the FA disciplinary over his challenge on Ashley Cole(if says not guilty and is proved guilty the ban could be doubled to 6 games). Quite amusingly in response to the request from the FA for Arsene Wenger to explain what he meant by his comments about Van Nistleroy after the game Arsenal have said they stand by their right to call Van Nistleroy a cheat :D Im suprised Rooney isnt being subjected to a disciplinary as well for the dive (which everyone, including him aknowledges was a dive).

A yellow card is usually handed out if someone dives and gets caught. Since Rooney admittet it after the game and to the Arsenal players under the match(??) i guess nothing will happen. Missing Ruud in some games isnt going to be such a blow, Smith just scored against Crewe, and he is maybe in his best form ever. Saha just came back from a long injury and need just a couple of matches to get back on track. Last season Ruud was the only class striker United had but now they have 4 great ones:D all of them could probably hold a starting position in almost any team in Premier League.

Peace;)
