The Seeker
Okay, my computer is beginning to show it's age, and rather than buying a brand new system, I'm thinking of just upgrading what counts. So, What I want is: a motherboard with PCI express expandability A good gaming processor (AMD or Pentium. List prefferences and reasoning) 512 extra MB of RAM for $1000 or less. Whaddya got? The Seeker
Okay, so after shopping around on newegg.com, I decided to just build a new system, cause I can. Anyways, I think I got all the components that I need, when I realized something: Both of my other computers have a secondary hard drive that is a much smaller capacity than my primary. So, probably a stupid question, but what's it for, and do I need a second smaller HD for my new system.
wassup
Don't take my word for it, but it will probably be better to have a secondary hard drive, just to store those important files on in case your primary goes kaput.
StormHammer
Did you already have RAM you intended to use in the new MoBo? Because I hope you checked it was compatible. Anyway...a second hard drive is not compulsory. Some people use a smaller (fast) hard drive for their OS and programs, and a larger (sometimes slower) HD for their data. The theory is that it keeps your system more efficient. You can also make a smaller partition on a large HD for your OS etc. Anyway, I agree with wassup. I have 2 HD's, and until recently I was using the second as a backup of important files. As always, however, I simply had so much stuff I needed to keep accessible that I've started using the second drive for original data rather than backups. A dangerous thing to do unless you burn files to CD/DVD on a regular basis, which I would recommend.

The Seeker
Tell me what you think of the system I have picked out: motherboard Processor Hard Drive RAM Graphics Card DVD-ROM DVD Burner Floppy Drive Case OS So, whatcha think? Any other suggestions or additions recommended?
Samuel Dravis
Just a few: Like what was said before, you might want to get an additional hard drive. With their price so low these days, it's not a big issue - and the backup ability is very valuable. Do you need a floppy drive? It may not even be worth it to you. I don't have one right now, and I haven't needed one for almost 2 years... You may be able to get a combo DVD/RW drive. Really, I suppose it's preference, though they may be more expensive like that. You may also want to look into XP Pro or 2K Pro. I haven't had any problems with either - not to say you will with Home, but it lacks some features that may be useful to you. The Seeker
I definately get a backup HD I'm kind of a freak for lots of saving options, and for 7.99 a floppy is worth it for me. I like the dual drives for burning. Just easier for me. Running XP home on my current rig with never any problems. What's better about Pro?
