Weirdest problem ever...

Recommended Posts

I know this isn't a tech support forum, but since I know of no friendly tech forum (at least not as friendly as SWK.net :D ) I decided to go ahead and ask about this weird problem I just got.

I was playing EA Sports' Euro 2004 when the Czech Republic won the title. I get out and open up Firefox.

The computer freezes. I manually restart.

On start up, the computer has a hard time detecting my secondary hard disk ( some Western Digital 100Gb hard disk) and I do a second manual restart. This time the computer detects it well, but Windows doesn't start normally.

I do another manual restart, this time with my secondary hard disk unplugged. Windows starts normally and does a check disk. Everything runs fine.

I restart and replug my secondary hard disk.

Everything works like nothing ever happened.

Now, you ask why I would ask for info even when everything works fine.

Well, I wish to inform myself so I can avoid/deal with a future similar situation, if it ever happens.

If you have any info, please post it.

Thanks for any kind of info.

Could have just been a hiccup in your system. sometimes a PC needs to be restarted three times or so before it recovers fully from such bugs.

I think Rhett is probably right on this... But man, that is the weirdest set of coincidences still.

Are your HD's jumpers set to the correct settings???

Sometimes this can cause a larger HD (that 100GB) HD not to start correctly. This could explain why your 2nd hard drive doesn't initalize sometimes.

If the problem persists or gets worse you might end up resorting to rebuilding your machine and dropping Xp or whatever on there again. Windows can do some REALLY odd things some times. From odd windows type of things happening to real problems resulting from too many crashes manually. ALWAYS try to avoid doing that. Also your secondary HD might have a bad segement of data near the beginning that keeps it from initalizing correctly sometimes. I'd use a disk defragementer like Norton's Speed Disk or another like program (including scandisk) that could fix your problem.

If you have access to anyone with PowerQuest Partition Magic installed you can get them to make you a set of two disks that are 3.5 floppy and start up your pc with those recovery disks/usage disks and they will find any errors on your HD's at startup automatically (and in most cases ask you to fix them).

REGARDLESS...the problems (hardware) you just stated could become VERY bad VERY quick if you don't watch your P's and Q's ;)

Hope that helps a bit and good luck

well, from what everybody else has stated, i don't think i need to add much here except to say that if its a new HD, check your warranty to see if you can't send it back for either a replacement or a full refund.

if not, then just follow the other's instructions. ;)
