Tales of the third age

((Are you thinking of Emara or Ever? Can't tell, so they're both awake :D ))

Emara had not been able to sleep and was singing softly to herself.

-------------------

Ever had managed to fall asleep, but the words of Galadriel haunted him, refusing to leave his head. And so he awoke. Being unable to sleep, he sat at the edge of the bed and listened to the singing of the Elves.

((I was thinking of Ever, but meh...))

Ilenal watched quietly as lights dimmed in many parts of the hidden elven city. He shook his head and blew out moke from his mouth. He started mumbling to himself quietly in quenya and then blew out some more smoke. He joined the singing quietly, even if his voice was barely recognizable from the elven chorus. The song was telling tales of the ocean and lands beyond, where everything bloomed and the Valar watched

((Ever is awake... he's listening to the singing... I'll have him come out and see you somewhere...))

Ever pushed himself off the bed and crept over to the door. Slowly, silently, he opened it and slipped out. Now, he could hear the singing a little better. He sat down and tried to focus only on the song, trying to push Galadriel's words out of focus in his head.

Ilenal looked at Ever and smiled. "Now don't go falling down. I would say there's atleast seventy feet down" he said and chuckled quietly, taking his back-up pipe(which is a must-have) from a bag on his belt and filling it with leaf. he handed it over towards the hobbit. "Here. The finest leaf in the whole Shire, at least for what I heard from the Brandybucks" he said and nodded for him to take the pipe. He continued to sing quietly after a short period of silence between the two. He looked at Ever and wondered why the hobbit hadn't yet been asking what the song was about... Hobbits were always curious people

For a long while, Ever kept silent. Then, he took the offered pipe and began to smoke. Finally, he spoke.

"You can know everything there is to know about hobbits," he said quietly. "And they'll still surprise you." He glanced over at Ilenal. "That's what you're thinking, isn't it?"

"A wizard said that once. His name is Mithrandir, or as you in the west will call him, Gandalf. I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve. ((Oh, shush. You had it coming))

Ilenal shook his head and finally smiled. "You are very queer people, I would say, but you say about us the same way, so I guess we are even, then" he said, staring into the deepening shadows of the forest. The power of Galadriel's ring masked the city slowly from outsiders and Ilenal started to relax slowly

"Lady Galadriel's words are bothering you, aren't they" he noted and then looked at the hobbit. "Lady Galadriel's words are wise, but hollow. She gives you fear, but no actual news. The feeling you have now is because of her mental skills, for she penetrated into your mind without asking" he explained and shook his head, blowing out a smoke ring or two

"Do not forget that I am a noldo, a master-elf, as they say. My past is like the night sky. Filled with darkness, but lots of tiny sprinkles of light and joy in the midst of it all. Lady of the wood has also spoken to me once when I was young, and it has never left me" he said and looked at the hobbit. "But I presume different kinds of elves matter not the hobbits. To you, all elves are the same"

Ilenal kind of 'snapped out of it' as Caer came into the conversation. Ilenal stood up and grabbed his cloak. "I'm sorry..." he mumbled and rose his hood up over his head. He looked in throught the window and at Emara, sighing, then left to the steps that led all the way down to the ground. when he got to the ground, he took his swords into his hand and looked at it quietly. The song of the elves started turning darker, telling tales of Morgoth and Sauron and the fall of Beleriand. Ancient tales of elven and human history, that nowadays concerned nobody. The sword started swinging about qith a 'whoom' every time it cut the air. His cape flapped behind him as he twisted and turned, continuing to fight the air. The dance of his moved around in a slowly moving circle. The elf continued a long time until he started his own song, toning slowly into an angry one and told of the pain and suffering that the elves of Gil-Galad suffered long ago on the battlefields. A few younger elves nearby stopped singing and looked at him, studying his words for a moment and then starting to chant his song quietly, as who sang it, could almost see for himself what they ha been throught in Mordor and those that did not unerstand the words could hear the tone of pain and suffering shining throught the words

Ever looked at Caer. "No."

Emara continued to sing until she heard the tone of the singing outside change. Then, she listened and gathered that Ilenal was leading the song. At this, she got up and hurried out in search of him.

Ilenal stuck his sword deep into the soil and sat down next to it, looking up at the trees, and slowly quieting the song into almost nothing, then toning the song into merely a whiser and then closed it to echo inside his head. He could hear the song perfectly, but nobody wa ssinging anymore. He stared at the sky as the song changed inside his head into a tale of seas, sailing, Teleri elves and grey ships

A soft voice interrupted Ilenal, singing in Quenya of the the sea and its call. The song faded and Emara approached.

"The sea calls to you, Ilenal," she said in Quenya. It was the first time she had spoken his name. "It calls to all Elves, a desire to leave Middle Earth, to leave the troubles of men behind. Gray ships will fill your mind until you respond to the calling. Your people are being called home."

She sat and watched him.

He turned to see Emara and sighed, nodding. "I know, Emara, but I don't want to leave you now, or for the next fifty years of your life. I want to see you grow old" he said and looked at her quietly, slipping his hood back behind his neck. The elf shook his head slowly. "No... I need to see you grow old..." he corrected and rose up for enought time to ge next to her. He took her hand and smiled, looking into her eyes, now falling silent. Ilenal held her hand quietly, and ran his thumb up and down the smooth skin, trying to absorb her every detail into his mind

"And when your final tie to this Middle Earth is broken, only then will you leave," Emara told him. "But who's to say you won't find another thing to tie you here when I am gone? Will you remain, the only Elf in Middle Earth after the ships are gone?"
