An "Accidental" Death

I'm planning on writing a short story in Russian for my

teacher. It's going to be called "Dolzhok", which means

"The Debt." I want to know how many years in prison

you would give either one or both of the main characters.

Here's what happens: Vladimir and his wife, whom he calls

Yery, live in an extremely poor part of town. Not only that,

but they're in serious debt to one of the town's few rich

people. He's a merchant who sells basic necessities at

outrageous prices, and this poor couple is in debt up

to their eyeballs.

One day, the merchant comes over to Vladimir and

Yery's house to try and "settle" their debt. He says

that if Yery will "act as his wife" for 2 years, then

he will forgive all of the couple's debt to him.

Yery is absolutely incensed, and she shoves the merchant

backwards to get him away from her. However, the merchant

stumbles clumsily into Vladimir's wobbly bookshelf, which falls

on top of him. Call it "trauma to the head": merchant winds up dead.

Oh--I forgot to tell you that as soon as the merchant

revealed what he wanted from Yery, Vladimir drew a pistol

on him and threatened to kill him. Yery said, "Please, put that

thing down," but then the merchant grabbed Yery and kissed her.

THAT'S when Yery went ballistic and gave him the fatal heave-ho.

So what do you think? If you were the judge, how would you

sentence Yery and Vladimir?

Thanks,

Tysyacha

If its in Russia, then chances are they could get away with dumping the body, whos going to tell on them? Theres probly unsavoury characters in their apartment that wouldnt want the police traipsing their their building. And since the merchant isnt married apparently, he probly doesnt have anyone in his house... unless his parents are still alive.

Story sounds good though
