Defragmenting Software.

One of my hard drives is very badly defragmented. So bad, that the default application that Windows uses for defragmenting doesn't even work on it. It will go to 15 or 20 %, and then say it is done, but some files couldn't be defragmented and there's barely any change. The last couple times I tried it only got to 3% and then said it was done. Is there any good, free defragmenting software anybody uses or knows of that will solve this problem?

The main proplem with the windows defragmentation is that it requires free disk space. In that case you might want to see if there are any files you can delete, or you might want to see if there is anything in the bin. I don't know what type of disk you have, but if you have a NTFS disk you might want t try to comprime (don't know if it's the exact word, I use a Dutch windows) some of your files. Also you could try to store some files elsewhere, and external HD might do the trick, or if you have more partitions on your HD, or even more HDs you might want to move some files there. And maybe there are some things you could burn on CD/DVD, finished work, but you want to keep it as a backup for example.

But the key to solve your problem is that you might want to try to get some free diskpace.

Already did that before defragmenting ;)

It's a 40 gb drive and I currently have 12.5 gb free. I know it would help if I freed up more, but I'm sure a different program would at least defrag it all the way through.

That should be more than enough free diskspace, one thing you could do if you're really desperate is that you move all your files to another disk, and than format the fragmented disk, however getting things installed properly can be a lot of work, so I don't recommend it untill you're really desperate. I don't know of any other defrag programs though.

The problem with that is that I don't have another disk since i completely wiped it so I could install Ubuntu (which still won't install). So I don't have anywhere else to put the files. But I know I have heard of defrag programs out there, I just can't remember what theyre called.

Meesa no have a DVD burner :(

Besides, right now I'm not looking to do a lot of work. I just want to get this sorted until I have enough saved up for a new huge hard drive.

I don't know what your definition of "huge hard drive" is, but I was able to pick up an 80 GB drive last December at Best Buy for $25. It is more than enough room for me.

Only $25? Thats a pretty damn good price.

I was looking at a 250 gb drive for around $125.

Not bad there either! If that is what you need, go for it. I, on the other hand, weigh the best deal against what I need. I could probably find a use for a 250 GB, but I am quite happy with 80.

easy answer: burn your important files on a DVD, wipe the HD, and then reinstall Windows. it'll take a while, but it'll do the trick. ;)

no need to do the reinstall until after hes tried a reformat :) Sounds like you may have some bad sectors perhaps. Did you run windows checkdisk/scandisk proggie ??

basically unless someone is running some ultra important software on their compy(eg. you are an international bank or NASA), its always handy to do a clear and wipe, especially if you have a relatively smaller drive like 40gb. I have to do it on my old p3 once a year perhaps. Otherwise **** gets clogged up. Its a hassle, the ways windows works results in the fragmenting... apparently Mac OSX doesnt have this problem...

the way I get around things is to keep all my apps setup files on a separate 80gb extrenal hdd(which I used to have for my laptop) That way, even if my compy and main HD crashes spectacularly or even gets fried i can reinstall very quickly, rather than digging out a zillion discs. of course for worst case scenarios, I do keep a back of vital stuff on both HDs, which I do about once a month...

btw, this is just some general advice, make sure you get a registry cleaner. Theyre just an important as adware and spyware cleaners for keeping your system running smooth and fast. There are some free ones out there, but Registry Mechanic(not free) is awesome :)

Yeah, and unfortunately, it found no problems. I was hoping it would find one and fix it and that would make the defrager work.

But yeah, I probably should just reformat.
