Lorden Darkblade Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 I want to change my processor but I'm not sure if the Athlon 64 is compatible with my motherboard. I have now an ASUS A7N8X-X with a AthlonXP 1.6. Can I put a Athlon 64 here or not? If not what processor should I get that would be as good as an AthlonXP 2.5 or higher.
RoxStar Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 Thats a socket A motherboard, meaning that its meant for socket A processors. I'm pretty sure that there aren't any 64 bit socket A processors. And I don't know if there are any Athlon XP chips that go faster than ~2.2 ghz. Your best bet is to hold out as long as you can and then buy a whole new motherboard.
Nerd_Annhilator Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 You won't, thats a socket A motherboard, for an AMD 64 you'll need a socket 754 or 939 motherboard. Dunno what processor to recommend, however.
Lorden Darkblade Posted January 8, 2006 Author Posted January 8, 2006 Hmmm.... Too bad, I recently changed my mother board and I don't want to expend more money on another one. I have to find a AthlonXP 2.5 or a good processor to buy
Det. Bart Lasiter Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 Try these, the A8N-SLI Premium is a great motherboard and worth the price and the 3200+ and 3500+ models give you great performance for the money. A8N-SLI Premium 3200+ 3500+
Prisoner 655321 Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 Most places don't even sell any Socket A procs other than Semprons, with lower clock speeds than the older Athlon XP. I guess they're supposed to have lower power consumption. They seem like a way to claim they still sell budget procs when they aren't a viable alternative anymore.
Samuel Dravis Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 If you're changing motherboards, I'd say get a socket 939 if you're going AMD64. It's the newer tech, and it really doesn't cost that much more.
BCanr2d2 Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 I think you are stuck with what you've got with the current Mobo. Thems the breaks with the way they develop processors... A new development equals a new amount of pins to connect to the board and new chipsets to control them. Always a way to force people to upgrade more than one component at a time....
Lorden Darkblade Posted January 9, 2006 Author Posted January 9, 2006 Dang... Looks like I'll have to wait another year to change my processor, cuz now I really don't have the cash to change the processor and the motherboard. Either that or I'll have to buy a used AthlonXP 2.5 or more.
