RevanA4
ok my brothers computer has spy-ware quake which I believe is a piece of spy-ware disguised as a Spy-ware removal program. now I've removed it via Add remove programs then proceeded to delete the actually exe file. and I've run a number of different spy-ware remove programs and they all detect it and remove it. but it won't stay remove. I've tried and was not successful at a system restore. Avast picked it up on a virus scan and and I removed it that way also. but the problem still remains I can't keep it off of that computer. so any ideas would be greatly appreciated
Det. Bart Lasiter
1) Find the entries in the registry for it and delete them. 2) Get a file "shredder" (you can Google it or search download.com) 3) Set the shredder to overwrite things 8-10 times (6 is the DoD standard, so do a few more scans more than that to be safe). 4) Shred the files. You should also try checking the processes that are running (in the task manager as well as things that start when the OS boots up), anything you don't recognize should be disabled. I'm pretty confident in my ability to fix computers but I'm paranoyd about messing something up in the regestry. if all I have to do is search for spyware quake in the regestry thats ok for me. is that all I need to do. Det. Bart Lasiter
You can always backup the registry, and this program probably has it's entries in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE, whereas Windows components are located... everywhere else

Det. Bart Lasiter
Yes, but it's best to go through them manually or with a registry cleaner (that deletes unused/useless keys). You never know what may have been missed.
RevanA4
finally got it removed. I ran all three spyware programs after booting up into safe mode. worked like a charm and hasn't been back since. but just o be safe I put a firewall on it cuz well SP2 firewall sucks if a mod could lock this thread as its served it purpose.
