Mothertounge Psychonauts, I need your help!

Recommended Posts

Hi, fellows PSI Cadets!

I'm translating Psychonauts from English into Italian. Unfortunately the game's been published here untranslated, so we Italian fans have formed a group to get the job done. :twogun:

I've enconuntered some strange things I couldn't understand. I hope you'll be able to help me out.

1) Talking about Fred, Crispin says:

"Got a meter on his melon like half sack of cherries."

What the hell does he mean? Is this some kind of cultural reference?

2) In Blackvelvetopia, someone pronounces this sentence:

"THE DEVIL CAT HAS HORNS!"

I don't know who says that nor what this line refers to.

3) In Gloria's Theater: what's a "Caboose Hug"?

4) While practicing in the main lodge, Quentin says:

"Ask not for who the cowbell ROCKS."

"The cowbell rocks for thee!"

Again, is this a joke about the lyrics of a song?

Thanks in advance,

Domenico "Diduz" Misciagna

1)This is just a metaphor for crazy, like "the lights are on but no-one's home" or "crazier or than a cuckoo bird."

2)...me neither.

3)No clue.

4)This is an old joke, not sure where it started but the original line was "Ask not for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee." relating to death.

Good luck with this!

Also, if you look closely, Phobe's drum kit has a cowbell on it.

2) Might be one of the poker-playing dogs. I certainly don't remember this line.

3) Might have something to do with a train carriage. Who says this?

Thanks for your help! :-)

3) The complete sentence is:

"I think you need a caboose hug!"

I have not managed to replicate that, so I don't know who says that, sorry.

4) Now I understand.. this is still pretty hard to translate, though.

Bye,

Dom

Some other lines around the "caboose hug" one:

"Ha ha! Look at what he's got!"

"Hey, that makes me happy!"

"What's up, friend? Want to do the happy dance?"

"Weee-heel, that's not very happy, is it?"

"I think you need a caboose hug!"

"What's that? Are you threatening me, little girl?"

"I'm not a girl!"

"Get her!"

"You messin' with some bad plants now, kid."

"Out of the way! Nobody likes you!"

"Your mom and dad don't like you especially!"

"Do your chores!"

"Study your lines!"

"I wish I were dead."

But then again, texts in the LUB files don't follow an order, so these could have nothing to do with the "caboose hug".

Those are all unused bits of dialogue from Gloria's Theatre. (From what I gather, in an early version of the level you had a lot less control over what was going on around you...all those lines aren't necessarily from a "lost play," but just things going on on the stage at random intervals.)

I went through the sound files, found what I think is all the cut dialogue (there's 6GB+ of files, though, so I'm not sure how accurate I was), and transcribed it a few months back...and glancing through the files I put together, the "caboose hug" (said by the Squeaky Flower, btw--so yes, one of the happy actors) didn't make it into the final version of the game. And if it did, it's amazingly well-hidden, because I couldn't find it.

What's the text around the Devil Cat? Could it be if you confused one of the older wrestlers? -_-

The "Devil Cat" thing is what you get when you confuse the last dog (the Bulldog, I want to say?) in Black Velvetopia.

Jintor, if it would make your job any easier, I'd be more than willing to send you the unused dialogue transcriptions I did--at least that way you'd know what you don't need to worry about translating. Let me know. :)
