Negative Sun
So I have an Athlon 1.16 GHz processor and 768 MB of RAM on Win XP, the problem is that my computer screen sometimes freezes, goes blank and goes back to normal...The odd thing is: this never happens when I'm playing video games, and my graphics card has 128 MB of RAM. We also have a rather small (40Gb) hard drive, could that have something to do with it? So what could it be? It's really annoying me...I think it might be the processor that's a bit outdated but my Fiancee is convinced it's the RAM. What do you guys think? Jeff
I'm sure it's not the rather small hard drive causing it. I can't really think of what it could be though, I wouldn't think it would be either the RAM or the processor.
Vaelastraz
With the information you have given us I can't do more than guess. How exactly does the screen freeze? Can't you give commands anymore? Can't you move the mouse? When the screen goes blank, does it perhaps say "out of range"? This really could be a lot of things: Virus... i assume you have checked that alrdy RAM... damaged Ram cause a lot of instability, this could be it your video card....might be damaged or not properly configured your screen... might be damaged
Jeremia Skywalk
By the way, i know this is sort of off topic, but better than making a new thread, so my sound sometimes just dissappears, you know, just turns off. WMP says that there is a problem with my sound device, but i realy have no idea what is going on here. Yes, it seems to never dissappear in middle of listening/watching something, only after i turn <insert one of my media programs here> off, than there is often a problem once i turn it on and only way to 'cure' it is restart (it never gets better over time.) I have scanned my hard drive and ran a cleanup programm too, nothing seems to work. I sort of don't believa that stuff about broken sound device, as windows lies to me 99% of time. Like I said, I think it's strange that it doesn't happen when I'm playing video games...

Jeremia Skywalk
@iNuter: I have tried wmp, crystal media player professional, mpc (media player classic) and winamp. Yeah i am pretty sure sound realy disappears.
Maverick5770
@Jeremia skywalk, are you sure your sound device isn't damaged, or if it can take the quality of the sound? @negative sun, is it possible your graphics card is feeding your monitor correctly, or does it have the right drivers? Yeah I recently installed the latest nVidia drivers for my GeForce4 MX 4000, I thought it might solve the problem, but it didn't... Do you think I should uninstall the nVidia drivers for my monitor? Cause it came with some control panel thing to set my screen resolution and stuff but I can do that anyways...
Jeremia Skywalk
I am sure it can handle that sound (and much more, once we started speaking), about the sound device damage... i don't know, is it even possible it gets 'fixed' by restarting the comp? Maverick5770
@Negative_Sun, it's definatly worth a shot, it could be the drivers conflicting. @Jeremia Skywalk, do you have drivers for your sound card, if so try reinstalling them, that migh fix it. Maverick5770
Hmm, this is really quite confusing, though it shouldn't be, it's hapened to me, but my last suggestion fixed it for me. Have you inspected the card itself? You might have to replace the card. is your monitor plugged in properly? Does the screen freeze, or is it the entire computer? If it's the entire computer, its not your card(most likely)

Vaelastraz
I suggest you try using another system. Try Linux. That way you can at least make sure that it is NOT a hardware issue. There are some free Linux "boot from cd" versions available. Additionally I would uninstall your graphic drivers completely (not just override with new drivers) and reinstall basic drivers, best would be using the drivers you originally had. Negative Sun
Tried that pal, didn't work, cause I had to uninstall the drivers for nVidia to install new ones right? So I just tried out my system on the original setup, still not fixed...I installed the latest drivers...still not fixed I'm trying to find drivers for my monitor itself, but I don't know my model because all my comp says is "Plug and Play Monitor"...The brand is Relisys btw... Pfff, maybe I just need a new monitor...
Maverick5770
Thats possible, it wouldn't hurt to test it, what is your monitor?
CSI
Interesting, if you have multiple card inserted, like me, ATI Radeon X1300 and nVidia Quadro FX 1400(Or 1500? Doesn't matter) inserted, and if I use both of the ATI and nVidia, ATI card will blink a lot of times, and back to normal. You know, next time I should buy another Quadro FX 1400 (Or 1500, whatever appropriate) to form a SLI. Negative Sun
It's a 17" CRT I think, weighs a ton lol, screen resolution is 1024x768 Yeah I know it needs an upgrade, but what I need is money lol Edit: Btw, would it be smart to add more RAM to this configuration? Or should I upgrade my processor first?
