"Well, seeing as I'm a girl, Brother Carlisle saw it fit to teach me how to defend myself," Maggie spoke up, giggling slightly after listening to Carwyn's toast-muffled statement. "I'm nowhere near as proficient as Abbott Carlisle, though. I'm surprised Aya remembered though; we'd never really discussed that and she wasn't really interested." She grew quieter as she realized something. "I don't mind sparring, but who would I be sparring with?" She gazed from Aya, to Carwyn, to Toa and finally to Kyo.

Carwyn had quickly downed the rest of his toast, a little peeved with himself for talking with his mouth full again. He dabbed at his lips with the napkin Kyo had thrown at him, then set it down and faced Maggie to answer her question. "Well, I'm really not much of a hand-to-hand combatant, as Aya and Kyo will attest to," he said ruefully, feeling the stitches in his side throb. "I prefer to pick my targets off from afar." He held his hand out towards the blonde warrior. "However, my good friend Kyo here is one of the finest melee combatants I've ever seen," he said, sounding a bit like a cheesey fight promoter. "If it's a good scrap you're looking for, I'm sure he can provide it for you." He caught Kyo's gaze with his own. "That is, if he can pry himself away from his books long enough."

"Well, I think that Kyo needs to take a break with some physical exercise and clear his head before he buries it inside some dusty old book again," Aya said. "And since he is the best sp... erm...." She thought for a second to choose a better word than 'spar-er'. "Combatant," she said, grinning satisfactorially by her word choice, "then he should be Maggie's partner."

She rose from the table, brushing off toast crumbs from her clothes and then smiling at Maggie and then Kyo. "I'll go and get the practice staffs from the exercise room. I know exactly where they are." She nudged Carwyn as she was turning to leave. "And even though you claim not to be a hand-to-hand man, maybe you can teach me a few moves."

"And even though you claim not to be a hand-to-hand man, maybe you can teach me a few moves."

"Oh I imagine those aren't the only moves he could teach you." Toa chuckled to himself, although he had said it just loud enough so Aya could hear. Then he quickly spoke up saying "I know my fair share of close-quarters from my old master, although I don't know if I could match up against Kyo and the such. I'm more fond of turning open spaces into cinder. It reminds me of home."

"Oh I've definitely got a few moves in mind for you," Carwyn said as he rose and cleared off his own section of the table. Trotting quickly after Aya, he caught up with her as she was exiting the door. After they were safely outside in the hallway, he said, "That was pretty clever on your part, setting up a sparring match." He took another glance back at the door. "I think it'll do them good, especially Maggie."

After clearing out all the dishes and various utensils, Maggie wiped her brow and looked at both Kyo and Toa. "Well, shall we all go to the library and retrieve from there what we need?" She turned to Toa and wagged a finger at him. "And you, Master pyromancer, would do well not to pick up any suspicious-looking scrolls."

As Kyo made ready to leave, Maggie sidled up to him. "Um, Kyo?" she said, still unused to saying his name. "Are you all right with this sparring thing?" Aya's suggestion had been bold, even for her, and Maggie wanted to make sure that the blonde warrior didn't mind having to go along with it.

Aya grinned at him over her shoulder as she was leaving, both for his semi-silent statement and his most recent one. "I wouldn't recommend turning the garden into a barbeque pit. Brother Damien would be most upset if he lost his herbs."

"Oh I've definitely got a few moves in mind for you," Carwyn said, as he hurried after her.

Aya gave Toa a wink as she headed out the door for the training room. "So someone's said," she whispered.

Carwyn soon caught her up and commented on her cleverness at setting up the two potential 'combatants.'

"I think Maggie likes Kyo," she said matter-of-factly to Carwyn as they entered the training room. "And Father Abbot seems well impressed by him, so...." She picked up one of the staffs. "Let's just hope they hit it off."

Then she grinned at herself. "Sorry, I wasn't intending for that to be a bad pun, but...." She shrugged. "Anyway, so what sort of moves did you have in mind to show me?" She put both hands on the staff and held it horizontally across his chest while she looked into his eyes. "Parry?"

"I'm perfectly fine with it." Kyo said, standing from his seat at the table, his cheerful gaze turning to Maggie. "I haven't had time for a friendly spar in quite a while - unfriendly is another matter all together, of course - but it ought to be ineteresting to practice with someone who's not trying to kill you." he said, a hand in his pocket as they started towards the library. A sudden 'dawning' seemed to come on him, and he looked at Maggie with a 'worried' look. "I mean...you're not planning to kill me, are you?"

"Parry requires someone to be striking at you," Carwyn replied, taking her hands in his and lifting the staff up over her head. "And it'll do you no good if they're going for your head and your staff is at your chest." He looked into her brown eyes and felt a little heat rise up to his face. "Of course, when parrying, you've got to make sure you don't let your guard down; otherwise, you leave yourself open for other... opportunities."

Maggie was taken aback by Kyo's question. She hesistated for a moment and studied his face, which looked worried, but there was a certain playfulness in his eyes. She exhaled, satisfied that he wasn't being serious. "Kyo, do I look like an assassin to you?" she asked, putting her hands on her hips, his name coming a bit easier to her lips as she grew more and more comfortable around him.

A grin split his features again. "I didn't think you looked like a martial artist either. Who's to say my entire perception of you wasn't off?" Nodding his head towards the exit of the hall and the staircase beyon, he extended an arm in front of him. "Ladies first." he said.

"Oh?" Aya moved closer to him. "Like... sneak attacks?" She kissed him quickly on the lips, then grinned. Before he could respond in kind, she said, "C'mon, grab the other staff and let's get back. Before they change their minds," she added.

She spun him around by pushing on the staff like the handle for a revolving door and then headed back to the kitchen.

Maggie grinned at Kyo's overt display of chivalry, scooting past him quickly and up the stairs. Entering the library proper, she looked around, her eyes adjusting to the relative darkness of the cavernous old room. "So what do you require of me, m'lord?" she said, using the honorific playfully.

"If you would follow me, Lady Roche." he answered in kind, the grin becoming a faint smile as he turned to the steps, moving up to the balconey that ringed the room. Crossing to where he had been sitting the night before, he picked up a few scrolls.

"I put away what I had finished last night," he explained, "And left what I didn't here. I figured that I would be back to begin my research again before Brother Hanzo had the chance to notice." Putting a few books under his arm, he grabbed two scrolls in one hand, holding them out to Maggie. "Otherwise I wouldn't have left them out. I don't think that Brother Hanzo would have been happy to find that his library had not been returned to the way it should be."

"Indeed not," Maggie replied as she took the scrolls from him. "We'll have to find something weighty to hold these down, wouldn't want them to blow away," she said, hefting the rather large roll of vellum. "Brother Hanzo would definitely not like that." She stood to the side as he finished gathering what he needed, then started towards the door. "Shall we go, then?"

Carwyn grinned at Aya's antics and allowed himself to watch her skip out of the room before grabbing the other staff and running after her. As he shut the door behind him, he noted how far ahead she was of him and had a flash of inspiration. Quickly doffing his tunic, he wrapped it across his chest and placed the staff between his back and his tunic. Taking off at a run, his practiced feet making little to no noise against the cool stone tiles, he quickly caught up to Aya. Bending slightly, he used his left arm to sweep her feet out from under her while catching her back with his right.

Looking down into her surprised face, he laughed and said breathlessly, "You know, it isn't nice to leave people behind."

Aya smiled. "It is when you get swept off your feet." She stared into his eyes for a moment, then looked left and then right. It didn't appear that there was anyone around at the moment. "Erm... so, are you planning to kiss me, or just hold me suspended until your arm gets tired?"

"Hey, I may not be Xan the man, but I'm no weakling," Carwyn lightly chided Aya. "That other alternative sounds pretty good though," he said as he leaned in to kiss her, holding her tightly to him. As they came up for air, he slowly let her back down to her feet, his hand still on her arm as her knees wobbled slightly. "Good thing you looked around before," he said, still holding her close. "Wouldn't want to get wetly interrupted like last time."

She grinned. "No, definitely not," she said as she pushed her hands off his chest, then caught his hand in her own. "C'mon, let's get Maggie and Kyo their staffs. I want to see how badly she beats him."

Carwyn chuckled as they pushed the door to the kitchen open. "Huh," he said, staring into the sparse, empty room. "I guess they've already headed out." He tugged her hand and carefully stepped out of the doorway, the staff still at his back. "Let's go meet them in the garden."

Toa sat on a bench in the garden for everyone else, since he didn't really have anything to do at the moment. This actually irritated him somewhat, because he was accustomed to doing something all the time whether it be talking or walking or, in recent cases, fighting and dieing. In any case, it would be most likely comical to see how things went with the apparent Aya/Carwyn and soon-to-be Maggie/Kyo thing going on at the moment. Toa personally had no confidence in having a relationship now after his last two, but that didn't mean he wouldn't take interest in ones forming in front of his own eyes.

"We shall." he answered, again allowing her to go first. Stepping quickly down the stairs to the first floor and out into the garden. Setting the scrolls and books down in a pile and weighing them down, the warrior looked up as Carwyn and Aya appeared from a seconds door, Carwyn carting the four training staffs. Standing straight, Kyo held out a hand and the ranger tossed one of the weapons to him, which he snatched out of the air.

"A beautiful day for a spar." he said, stepping away from the others. Swinging the staff to the side in one hand, he twirled it like a wheel first on the right and then left sides of his body before grabbing it with his other hand. "So then...it's Miss Maggie versus myself?"

Maggie took the staff offered to her by Aya and turned her eyes towards Kyo, who was already twirling his and readying himself for the match. "So then...it's Miss Maggie versus myself?" he asked. She nodded, then walked to the middle of the grassy clearing, tying her long hair up in a tight bun at the back of her head. Clasping the staff in front of her with both hands, she bowed her head and closed her eyes, uttering a small prayer to the gods, as she always did before practicing her martial abilities. She took a deep, cleansing breath, then opened her eyes again. Taking the staff in her right hand, she used her left to push it from the bottom towards the right, twisting her weapon hand so that it spun, then bringing it to a stop when it was parallel with her arm. Settling the end of the staff next to the small of her back, she held it out to the side while simultaneously spreading her feet and bending her knees, bringing herself into the most basic of fighting stances within the staff discipline.

Holding her left arm up, palm turned outward, she exhaled again, then looked at Kyo. "Whenever you're ready, Kyo," she said, her voice sounding distant and detached.

Kyo strode to stand directly across from Maggie, a few feets' distance left between them. Stepping back into a basic fighting form, he held the staff lengthwise across his chest with both hands gravitating towards either end of the wooden pole. Both knees bent, his back foot pushed slightly out of alignment with the front, moving about an inch behind and standing almost on his toes. The Shal-Chin form was the most basic of forms that could be used for almost any weapon. For the staff, it was a mainly defensive form that left very little room for rapid, precise movements and even smaller room for offensive strikes, but the blocks that it offered were very strong and could be placed to block a variety of blows.

Looking at Maggie, he nodded subtly to her. "Ladies first, Miss Magdelena," he said, "And may the best fighter win."

Maggie wasn't really quite sure how to go about attacking Kyo. He was the first opponent in a long time who she had no prior battle experience with which to base her fight strategies upon. Deciding to play it safe, she strode forward, using her left foot as a pivot and bringing the staff in her right arm across in a horizontal strike.
