Carwyn couldn't help grinning at Aya's latest slip of the tongue. "I do that a lot, don't I? Don't tell me you don't like it, Aya" he said, his voice still carrying a mischievious undercurrent and his eyes glinting in amusement. "But c'mon, you see it don't you? You even said yourself that Maggie likes him." He cast another glance at the fight, then back down at Aya. "And Kyo might be a little dense, but I think someone as smart as him will figure it out eventually."

Kyo spun in the other direction, coming to rest in a defensive stance, his knees bent so that he hovered low over the ground, a stance that maximized the use of acrobatics and minimized the size of the body.

"Come now," he said, taking his staff in both hands as he noted her position. "Let's try this again, shall we?"

Shifting the position of her hands, Maggie brought her staff screaming down towards Kyo, again fully expecting him to block it. What she didn't expect was for her staff to break as it connected with his. Splintering in several directions, the top half of the staff tumbled forward, coming to a rest behind him. She looked at the shattered stump in her hand, then at Kyo. "Oops?"

He looked at her in surprise for a few moments before breaking out in laughter.

"My dear Magdelena! You've broken the training staff!" he said between laughs, standing from the kneeling position he had taken to help support his block. "I don't think I've ever seen someone shatter their weapon so quickly!"

((Laaaaame. *eyetwitch*))

"That's the quickest I've ever broken a staff," Maggie said, still looking at the broken piece of wood in her hand. "I didn't realize how hard I was swinging, I guess," she murmured. Dropping it to the grass, she turned to look up at Kyo, who had stood up and was now towering over her. She'd not realized just how tall he was compared to her until now, when they were standing right next to each other.

Tucking a strand of chestnut-brown hair that had come loose behind her ear, she gave him a silly grin and said, "I guess we're calling it a draw, eh?"

Maggie blinked, then scrunched her face up and stuck her tongue out at Kyo. "Fine," she conceded. "But next time, we spar unarmed, so there's no breaking of staves to worry about." She wiped her increasingly sweaty brown hair and thrust her hand out at him. "Deal?"

"Deal." he answered, and they shook hands on it. Her small hand fit easily into his and he half fancied that if he squeezed too hard, he would break her fingers quite easily. However, after their past match - and the strength of her grip now - he knew that she wasn't quite as weak as she appeared. "Though I'm not one for hitting women, as a forewarning."

"Who says you're ever going to get to hit me?" Maggie joked playfully as she released his hand and took a step back. Setting her feet together, she put her hands rigidly at her side, then bowed deferentially to Kyo. When she brough her head back up, she was still smiling radiantly. "Thanks for the spar, Kyo. I haven't had that much fun in a long time."

He bowed to her in return, a grin on his face as well. "It was my pleasure, truly. I didn't expect you to fight so well; it was a rather pleasant surprise on my part." As he stood to full height again, his grin widened to cocky smile. "And we'll just see about who will be hitting who."

"It's a date, then," Maggie said, winking at Kyo as she wiped the sweat from her brow on the sleeve of her dress. Exhaling, she turned to glance over at where Aya, Carwyn, Toa and Takara were, still looking at her and Kyo in rapt attention. Aya was smiling and Maggie couldn't help returning one to her friend in kind. Trotting over, she went to clasp Aya's hands in hers and asked, "Well? What'd you think?"

Carwyn's eyes grew wide as he watch Maggie completely shatter her staff against Kyo's. Wow, he thought. The force needed to break one of those staves was definitely considerable and in all honesty, Carwyn didn't think Maggie possessed the necessary strength to do so. But the splintered stump in her hand was testament to exactly that.

As they finished up and Maggie approached Aya, Carwyn strode over to Kyo's side. "Looks like you two were enjoying beating the snot out of each other," he told the warrior merrily.

"I think you definitely got his attention," Aya replied softly. Then in a normal tone of voice, "And I would say that you won." She looked over at Kyo, who was talking with Carwyn. "Maybe you should come along with us on our quest? We could certainly use another warrior. And someone to keep Kyo on his toes," she added.

Maggie's eyes widened at Aya's offer. "Me? Come with you?" she asked, a little dumbfounded. "Oh Aya, I don't know. I've got to ask permission from Brother Hanzo and Abbott Carlisle and it's all so sudden and..."

"And I think you should go," a deep voice said from behind Aya. Peering around her friend, she spotted Abbott Carlisle coming out from the door.

"Really?" she asked, astonished.

"I wouldn't say that we were beating the snot out of each other." Kyo answered, grinning at Carwyn, "Just a bit of friendly competition. And you need to start brushing up on your close-combat - one of these days, you're going to be next."

Kyo looked up as Abbot Carlisle appeared from somewhere behind him, striding to speak with Maggie.

"Me? Come with you? Oh Aya, I don't know. I've got to ask permission from Brother Hanzo and Abbott Carlisle and it's all so sudden and..."

This caught Kyo's attention, causing him to turn around to look at the two women. Had Aya just done what he thought she just did?

"And I think you should go." the old Father said, seeming to startle Maggie. As she turned around, Kyo remained motionless and silent.

"Pfft, no fight's worth fighting if I can't shoot my opponent," Carwyn scoffed, punching Kyo playfully on the arm.

"Me? Come with you? Oh Aya, I don't know. I've got to ask permission from Brother Hanzo and Abbott Carlisle and it's all so sudden and..."

Carwyn stopped short and looked over at where Kyo had turned to stare at Aya and Maggie. No way...

"And I think you should go," Abbott Carlisle said to Maggie, seeming to appear out of nowhere. It didn't take but a few moments for Carwyn to piece together what had just transpired. He glanced over at Kyo; the warrior stood quiet and solemn, the mirth drained from his face.

Deciding to take the initiative, Carwyn approached the two women. "Ah, if you've just done what I've thought you've done, Aya," he said to the merchant, "then don't you think it would've been better to ask our fearless leader first?" He shifted his gaze to Maggie. "Not that I don't want you to come along, Maggie," he added quickly.

Kyo shook his head slightly, blinking slowly, his jaw set.

"You have to realize, Miss Aya," he said, "Exactly what you're asking Miss Roche to do. You've seen already the trouble that our journey has brought us - for the last few days have not been calm in the least. The journey is dangerous, as we all well know, and we can't just automatically assume that Miss Roche would care to become part of that."

He looked now to Maggie. "With all due respect, Miss Roche, I'm not sure that it's a smart idea for you to join us."

"I believe Magdelena is more than up to the challege, Master Ruroni," the Abbott said, smoothly interposing himself between Kyo and Maggie. "She is smart, educated and you yourself have seen her fighting prowess. I believe she would become a great asset to your little band of adventurers, especially if you run into any further 'dangers'." He looked over at Maggie, who was still dumbstruck. "Not to mention that she shouldn't have to spend her whole life here cooped up with a bunch of crusty old men."

At this, Maggie snapped out of her daze. "Abbott Carlisle!" she exclaimed. "You and Brother Hanzo and everyone are anything but crusty! You are all learned, wise and wonderful men and I'm glad to have grown up here."

"And we are glad to have you here, Magdelena," the Abbott replied, looking at Maggie fondly. "But you are of age now where you are fully capable of making your own decisions as to what you would like to do with your future. As such, it is your decision whether or not you would like to leave us." He glanced at Kyo. "That is, if Master Ruroni has made his own decision."

After a moment of silence in which all eyes were on him, Kyo shook his head.

"I'm still not entirely sure that I like the idea." he said, sounding almost begrudging, "But I know that I really have no say in what Miss Roche chooses to do. As you have pointed out, Father Abbott, she can make her own decisions. I just pray that she thinks about it first."

His eyes were on the grass as he spoke almost as if hiding the dark glimmer that was there. Even as he finished speaking, he didn't look up.

"If you don't want me coming along, then I totally understand," Maggie said, noticing Kyo's sudden shift in personality. Not a few moments ago he was jovial and smiling; now he seemed distant and unfeeling. There was definitely something troubling him. She chewed her lip as she approached him and looked up into his vivid blue eyes. "I don't want to be a burden," she said quietly. "And you are the leader, so your word is final and I respect that."

Maggie brightened a little. "Thanks for your concern, but I think I'm able to watch out for myself pretty well," she said, with a twinkle in her eye. "But anyway, let us speak of this later, when it is more pertinent." She tugged his arm. "Come, you said you had some research to do."

Carwyn sidled up next to Aya. "Where did that bright idea come from?" he asked her, a hint of merriment taking the accusatory tone away from his question. "Not that I mind it really," he continued, crossing his arms over his chest. "Maggie seems to share your knack for making our big lug of a leader open up and talk and, dare I say it, enjoy himself."

A grin began to appear on Aya's lips. "You think I have a knack? Huh. Never thought of it that way before." She gave a single nod of satisfaction at the revelation.

"Anyway," she continued quietly, "the reason why I asked Mags to go with us is that... well, she never gets to really get out and go anywhere, except to gather herbs and stuff. And, besides that, I'd like to have another woman in our group. You know, to even things out. We've got you, Kyo, Toa, Akira, Xan, Kai and Katsuro, and me, Tellis, and Takara--that's seven to three. And, she can hold her own in a fight and she can help Tellis if anyone needs healing, and she's my very best friend. Why not ask her to go and share the adventure?"

"Well, Kyo did have some good points when he brought up the fact that we've faced quite a bit of danger on our little excursion already," Carwyn replied, rubbing the stubble on his chin thoughtfully. "And given our luck, we'll probably run into quite a bit more trouble down the road." He glanced over at Maggie, who was tugging at Kyo's arm and smiled. "I do agree that she's quite able to handle herself in a scrap." He grinned at Aya crookedly. "She could probably show me a thing or two about melee fighting."
