A question about the first OST.

Recommended Posts

I was listening to the first Soundtrack for Psychonauts today, well...10 minutes ago. And I had started listening to my favorite song, the Whispering Rock Psychic Summer camp theme. And one of my favorite part of the song is the Harmonica. I am currently learning how to play the harp as it were, and I wanted to know, who is playing the harmonica? And is there and Harmonica tabs for those parts on the song? Oh and also, what kind of Harmonica is the person playing?

Thanks, and if nobody knows that fine, just post your favorite song :D.

Funny thing, I just got a Harmonica a little while ago. I loved the Harmonica part of that song too. I really thought the music in this game was great and that's such a rare ting now-a-days.

I have absolutely no musical talent or skills what-so-ever. But I'm messing around with it and its kinda fun. Nothing else to really help you out, just wanted to contribute.

Kthnxbuy.

I'd assume it's Peter McConnell, the composer, as he tends to do a lot of the live instrumentation in his music; if not, it'll be somebody he brought in. Either way, it's very unlikely he released any kind of sheet music for it. :( If you feel up to it you might want to try learning it by ear though; it's very satisfying, even if it it can take ages. :D

As a side note, if you love the Psychonauts music then you might want to check out the Grim Fandango soundtrack, which was written/performed by the same Peter McConnell responsible for the Psychonauts music (You can probably spot similarities in this to a certain theatre!). Heck, the game itself was made by the same people responsible for Psychonauts so the best way to hear it would be to grab the game, although it's more focused on puzzles rather than action as it's an adventure game. ;)

Sorry I can't help either... I just wanted to say the vocals rock on both Psychonauts soundtracks.

Does anyone think it's weird that none of the music from Milla's level was on there? Milla's thing was a DANCE PARTY. But not a single Milla song was on either CD.

Actually, I've been goofing around playing different game/show tunes on my Chinese ocarina XD

It's a very...oriental sound; doesn't work sometimes though...

I think the harmonica bit can be translated into ocarina style...I'll need the tabs though :x

  • 2 weeks later...

I need to find more Oriental music.

Weird about no Milla songs.

Maybe there'll be a "WOW Milla's Dance Songs" album? lol

I just ordered the Psy Original Cinematics cd; I hope it's good.

Don't know how well Grim Fandango will work on today's computers, Thrik. It ran back in Win 95's hey-day.

There was a site where you could download other songs from Psychonauts not found on the ost CD. Like Milla's dance theme. I can't find it at the moment though. Sorry.

I'd like to give Grim Fandango a shot sometime. I think my comp would be able to handle it and people seem to love it.

Milla's music is almost certainly absent as it has the distinction of being the only music in the soundtrack that wasn't composed by Peter McConnell, although I have no idea who did it -- I think it was just contracted out to someone who specialises a bit more in that genre rather than the more traditional sound of McConnell.

As for downloading the soundtrack, while it's illegal to host them (if they were caught they were probably sent a Cease & Desist from the lawyers) you can easily rip them using the superb Psychonauts Explorer, which allows you to get every single sound from the game.

Although listening to the proper soundtrack CDs is best as the ripped music is cut up into bits and mixed together by the game later on depending on the action (this is most obvious in Basic Braining where more instruments appear in certain areas), you can get some key missing tracks like Milla's which as far as I remember is just one long track.

Of course, you can't get the cutscene music with Psychonauts Explorer as they mixed the sound effects, voices, etc directly into the music itself; you'll need the CD for that.
