“Sir…sir? Wake up sir.”

I sat up, and looked around. As I rubbed my aching head, a clone trooper brought over some hot water for me. He handed it to me, and then pulled out a data pad.

“You took a hard fall sir. It was a good thing your armor is strong, or you would’ve been seriously injured.”

“What happened again? I’m really confused…I mean all I can remember is defending that ridge…” I said.

“You and your squad were ordered to defend the ridge so our troops could advance on ahead. During your defense, you were thrown off it by a thermal, and fell on a ledge ten feet below. Any further, and you wouldn’t be here.”

“I see, so where is my squad now?” I asked.

“They’re resting, or what’s left of them.” Said the trooper.

“What do you mean ‘what’s left of them?’” I asked.

“Well sir, RT-87 and 88 were blown up by the same thermal that knocked you over the ridge, and RT-56 was killed by a SBD.”

“I see. Have they been properly removed from battle?”

“Yes sir.” He said. “Commander Connors requested it himself.”

“Good. Thank you soldier, but may I ask where my gear is?” I said.

“It’s in that tent over there, with your squad. Your new orders will be coming in soon too; we’ll deliver them as soon as they do.”

“Thank you again soldier.” I said, and then I walked out of the medical tent.

I walked across the crowded rows of tents. The ‘street’ as you could call it, was full of injured clones and scattered boxes. Screams of pain and barking of orders were heard above everything. I rounded another corner, and then entered a small tent.

Inside sat my squad, tired, battle scarred, and alert. RT-85 walked over to me, and handed me my DC-15, a few boxes of ammo, some thermals, and DC blaster side arm. I equipped my gear and then trooper from earlier walked in, with another data pad. He handed me it, and then pulled out another data pad.

“Alright sir. As you might already know, this world, Kolatill, is very cold. We’ve refitted your weapons to with stand some of the harsher climate, but it is untested.”

“So were going out there with experimental weapons that could fail on us?” asked RT-77.

“Yes.”

“Wow. Aren’t we lucky? First the ridge now this, the day just keep’s on getting better.”

“Cut it seventy seven, save your humor for the battlefield.” I said sharply.

“Yes sir.” Was the response.

I looked to the clone trooper, and nodded my head. He acknowledged, and continues the briefing.

“Your mission is as follows; you are to escort the AT-TE walkers into battle to the north. Once there, give support to the SPHA’s as they attack the main CIS base. Once an opening has been made in the base, infiltrate and recover any data useful. Exfiltrate, and regroup with the walkers. You’ll receive new orders then. You leave in ten.”

The clone saluted, and then exited. I turned to my squad of only four. RT-77, 85, 92, 93, and me, RT-99, were the only surviving members of the original 9. This wasn’t going to be a cakewalk. RT-92 stood up, and grabbed his rifle.

“We better get going. Those walkers aren’t going to wait.”

I nodded, and slung my rifle over my shoulder. We all exited the tent, and proceeded to the walkers. Another clone was calling out squad names near the walkers.

“Gamma, you’re on walker T-65. Bravo, you got X-43.”

“Sigma here.” I said to the clone.

“Sigma, eh? Let’s see…Sigma…Sigma…ah, Sigma, you got TY-9. It’s over there, to the left.” He said.

“Roger.” I said.

We walked over to the walker the trooper pointed to. It was a new AT-TE, nice and shiny. Unfortunately, when this battle was over, its nice paint job was going to be obsolete. The walker’s pilot popped his head out from the cockpit, and looked at us.

“You must be Sigma, right on time. I’ll pop open the back hatch for you guys, and we leave in five, so get ready.”

The hatch lowered down, and one by one, we stepped onto our chariot, preparing for the battle ahead.

Ok, criticism is welcomed. This is kind of for a project I’m doing, and this is a one of my drafts. I liked this one the most and I wanted to see what you guys thought. Revisions and corrects would be appreciated.

Thanks.

The AT-TE walked steadily along side almost a dozen others, all en route to the SPHA’s location. Seventy-seven looked out through a viewport and gripped his weapon. He looked one more time, and then looked to me.

“Sir, two enemy STAP’s, northwest of our position.”

“Affirmative. Squad leaders, we have enemy activity northwest of our current location, take precaution as we advance.”

One by one, the squad leaders acknowledge. I turn to Eighty-five, our squad marksman. I point to the viewport hatch to the left.

“Eighty-five, set up your sniper right there. That should give you good cover for picking off those STAP’s.” I say.

“Roger sir, I’m on it.” Responds Eighty-five.

Eighty-five sets up his sniper, and adjusts his scope. Ninety-two, who had gone up the top hatch to keep an eye out for, jump back down and grabbed his Z-6 chaingun.

“Sir! We got multiple enemy targets all converging on our position!”

“Dammit, all units prepare for enemy weapon fire.” I say as I load my rifle.

Seconds after my order, the AT-TE is struck by blaster fire. Ninety-two opens up with his chaingun, and Eighty-five fires his sniper, confirming two STAP kills. Seventy-seven opens his comm channel.

“Sir, we’re useless sitting in here. Requesting permission to head out onto the battlefield.” Asked Seventy-seven.

“Permission granted. Sigma, lets move!”

Seventy-seven hit the switch to lower to boarding ramp, and one by one, our squad exited the AT-TE. Eighty-five and Ninety-two stayed back, providing cover fire and protection for the troopers and AT-TE. Ninety-three tossed a thermal over some rocks, and we took cover. Seconds later, droid parts flew over our head, and we popped up, clearing the rest of the droids. Seventy-seven climbed up over the low rock wall, and went prone. After surveying the area, he clicked in on the comm.

“Sir, if we can get someone to give good covering fire right here, then we got a good position to ambush the droids from behind.”

“Affirmative. Eighty-five, you still there?” I asked.

After a few seconds, Eighty-five responded.

“Yes sir. Need something?

“Actually I do. I need you to provide covering fire at our location ASAP.” I ordered.

“Roger, on my way. Eighty-five out.”

I shifted my rifle, and fired into an approaching Super Battle Droid. Blaster fire was coming in all directions. Screams of death came on all comm channels. The clone trooper’s distinct blue blaster bolts were faint against the droid army’s red lasers. Eighty-five’s voice came over the comm.

“Sir! I’m coming in east of your position! Cover me!”

“You heard him! Sigma provide covering fire now!” I ordered.

I reloaded my rifle, and fire into the mass of battle droids. Seventy-seven and Ninety-three proceed to do the same. Moments later, Eighty-five appears running like the devil to our position. He jumps over the rocks, barely avoiding a blaster shot to the back. I crouch run over to him and peer over the rocks, and fire at two SBD’s.

“Listen, we’re going to ambush the droid army from the right side. We need cover fire from that position right there. It over looks the droid’s positions.”

Eighty-five looks, and then turns back to me.

“Roger that sir. Cover me again, I’m moving out.”

I toss a thermal over the rocks, which blows up a group of advancing droids. Eighty-five uses this to run to the overlook position. Seventy-five fires the last of his magazine into another group of SBD’s.

“Sir! They’re everywhere, we need reinforcements, and fast!.”

“Someone say they needed help?

I turn around to see three approaching AT-TE’s. Ninety-two’s familiar giant, blue glowing chaingun stands out on the middle walker. The walker’s open fire, obliterating and pushing back the droid army, and provides us cover. Another walker comes near us and unloads it’s troops. After they survey the area, a lone soldier walks down the ramp. Dressed in white and orange armor, we instantly realize who this is.

“Soldiers! Salute! Commander approaching!” I order.

The clone commander looks us up and down, and nods. He pulls out a data pad, looks, and then puts it away.

“At ease, soldiers. I congratulate you on your defense here. You have done much for the Republic. This shall be our new command post thanks to you. We have ammo and med tents set up to the east. I’d advise you head over there before taking your new orders.”

The commander hands me a data pad with our new orders. I look over it, and acknowledge. The commander nods, and walks back into the AT-TE. I turn to my squad with the data pad in hand.

“Alright, lets get to that way-point and restock on ammo. Then we move out.”

I put away the data pad, and lead my squad to their next destination.

The Confederacy had a lot of assassins and special warriors, all behind the scenes. They were tough, but the one think you never wanted was to come face to face with a Dark Jedi and their lightsaber. Oh no, those guys were hard to kill, and left a mark afterwards. Lots of soldiers died taking them on, few live to tell the tale, like me. – ARC Trooper Alpha – 1, before death en-route to Coruscant.

<Exiting System>

The aroma of burnt metal filled the air. Our helmets were made to circulate the air to give us clean, fresh oxygen, but I had taken off my helmet to take a drink of water. It was disgusting, but that was expected on the warfront. It wasn’t like we were going to get a feast, we never would. That was for the Jedi to receive, not us low ranked troopers. We were just killing machines in the eyes of the Republic.

Seventy-seven had restocked on weapons and more. He now brandished a RPG on his back, courtesy of a fallen trooper that was brought in earlier. His gear was now spare parts. Ninety-two had rejoined us, and traded in his mounted minigun for a shoulder mount and a heavy blaster pistol. Eighty-five and Ninety-three both sported a pair of blaster pistols, along with their main weapon; their blaster rifle and sniper rifle. I had grabbed more ammo for my rifle, and some detpacks. I turned and rounded up my squad.

“Alright. Now that we’re refreshed, we got new orders from the commander himself.”

“It’s not going to be a simple milk run, is it sir?” asks Seventy-seven.

“Unfortunately no, Seventy-seven, its alittle bit harder.” I pull out my datapad, and access our orders. “We are to head south.”

“South?” asks Ninety-two. “But I thought the fighting was to the north.”

“It is, but our objective is south. The commander wants us to locate a missing squad, Gamma. They were en-route on an AT-TE when contact was lost with them. The commander fears the worst, and wants us to investigate. If we find anything, we are to report on his comm channel immediately, and if things get hot, we pull out. Got it?”

“Yes sir!”

I put away the datapad, and secure my gear. I point to Eighty-five.

“You got scout.” I say.

“Roger sir, moving on ahead to scout.”

Eighty-five runs off ahead, and we start walking. I activate the my information register.

<End? Yes>

I closed out of the program, and looked ahead just in time to hear Eighty-five’s voice in the squad comm.

“Sir!” Eighty-five exclaims.

“What is it soldier?” I ask.

“We got contacts. Four SBD’s and two regulars. One regular has a sniper, others have rifles.” Reports Eighty-five.

“Affirmative. Any sign of Gamma or the AT-TE?”

“Yes sir. The AT-TE is on the other side of the droids. It looks like they were guarding it.” Eighty-five says.

“If there’s a squad there’s a battalion.” Says Seventy-seven.

“I agree.” Ninety-three says. “We should be careful not to cause too much noise.”

“That’d be hard with me around.” Ninety-two says, pointing at his minigun.

“Cut it guys. Seventy-seven, move to Eighty-five’s position. Ninety two and three, flank right, I’ll take center. Fire on my count.”

The squad disperses, and I move up to my position. Soon the other squad members click in to confirm that they’re in position. I give the order on the comm.

“Up and over.”

All at once, three thermal detonators from each position fly over the natural ice barricades, and land near the droids. The ticking of the timers can be heard in the quiet valley. One of the droids looks down at the detonators.

“Uh oh.”

The detonators explode, silencing the droid. The two regulars and two SBD’s go down easily. The other two weakened droids are picked off easily. I chime in on the comm.

“ Eighty-five, Ninety-two and three, stay here. Seventy-seven, move to that walker. Cover us as we move.” I order.

Seventy-seven and I rappel down the icy wall, and head off towards the downed walker. Moments later, we reach it. The snow had already begun to bury the walker. I walked around to the back to the exit ramp, it was wide open. Inside laid the bodies of Gamma and the AT-TE pilot. Seventy-seven came up behind me and peered inside.

“Ouch. Sucks to be them, but I wonder how they all died inside?”

“Maybe the droids put them back in to clean up?” asks Eighty-five.

“No way. Battle droids, cleaning up? Not a chance in hell they would.” Responds Ninety-three.

“He’s right. It almost looks like an inside job…Well, at least they’re all in one place.” Says Seventy-seven.

I look inside, and count the bodies; Two pilots and four troopers. I then remember what the information register had said.

“There’s a missing body.” I say.

“What sir? That can’t be.” Says Seventy-seven.

“It is. There’s four troopers, when Gamma has five. Start looking around.”

Seventy-seven starts looking left, and I go right. I look up and down the hills of snow. I turn around and begin to walk back to the walker when Eighty-five yells over the comm.

“Sir! Behind you!”

I swing the butt of my rifle around, only to strike my attacker. They hit the ground hard, and I point my rifle in their face. Next to them is a hole the shape of a body.

“So you had been hiding under the snow. Who are you?”

I kick the body over to only be shocked; it was a clone. The missing soldier of Gamma. The lower my rifle as the soldier stands up.

“Private Ex Pee Seventy-eight, Gamma Squadron. Sorry about that sir, I was only being cautious.”

“It’s alright soldier. I apologize for knocking you with my rifle. I was being cautious. So tell me, what happened hear?” I ask.

“We were on-route to our destination, an underground facility some stealth troopers found. On the way there, one of the legs of the walker collapsed. I was sent out to check it out, and then I heard blaster fire from inside the walker. I jumped into the snow and waited. Moments, this Jedi walked out, but he wasn’t a normal Jedi. No, this one had a red saber, and he camouflaged himself after he exited the walker.”

“Red saber?” Asks Seventy-seven.

“A Dark Jedi.” I say.

“Dark Jedi?” Ninety-two asks, confused.

“Oh, I heard of them. They’re like Jedi but evil and can shoot lightning.” Says Ninety-three.

“Tell me Private, where is this base?”

“It’s right over the-“

The trooper never finished his sentence. A red blade erupts from his chest and pulled out. He falls to the ground, gasping for his last breaths of air. The blade returns to a lone figure, perched on top of a rock. The figure grins in pleasure.

“Is that…?”

“Yes Seventy-seven. That’s a Dark Jedi.”

“Fierfek.”

  • 2 weeks later...

I like what I see, but I have trouble following your point of view sometimes. I realize it is meant to be first person, but for example:

"I swing the butt of my rifle around, only to strike my attacker. They hit the ground hard, and I point my rifle in their face. Next to them is a hole the shape of a body."

The tense here seems off to me. It seems to me it should be written "I swung the butt of my rifle around only to strike my attacker..."

You do this throughout the story and I don't know if it's intentional or not.

Other than that, I noticed just a couple minor errors...hear instead of here etc...

Keep up the good work!
