French to English (if possible)

I dunno if there is allready a thread about this but... I just bouth this copy of Star Wars The Best Of PC and it turns out the copy of Star Wars Knights of the old republic is in french. So now I'm asking myself desperatly if there is way of turning or converting this game in the english version (the original if u prefer). I'm actualy a french canadian but I prefer the original version wich tends to always be in english. If any of you can help me so that I dont have to rebuy the game in englsh to play it, I would be realy thankfull.

Unfortunately the game only contains dialog voice over and movie cutscenes in one language on the discs, so the best you could do would be to change your dialog.tlk file for an English copy. This would make all the text in the game appear in English, but you'd still get spoken dialog in French.

To convert your dialogue into English (of course text only) use the DLG/UTI/UTC Language Converter tool. A tutorial covering the properties of dialogue files can be found here. If you want a crack at adding in your own voice dialogue files and .lip files, grab the Soundset (SSF) File Editor and this tutorial here. There is also a LipSynch Editor, but i don't know if it works with Kotor 1, you can find that on the same page.

 

Just a word of advice, it would be best to just buy a new copy of the game, as you have a lot of dialogue in the game to convert as well as other aspects such as journal entries, item descriptions etc. to have a proper full translation. Also, the dialogue voicing would still be in French, so it it may be somewhat wierd, unless you like subtitled French films of course!

 

P.S. If you bought your game, even online you should have a receipt or an emailed receipt, so why don't you just return it (with receipt) to get your money back and then buy the English copy of the game?

Hun thanks for all your help and taking the time to make to say all this but I did not buy this game online and its why its in french (I think that here in Quebec province we now have a law that make games in french, if possible) but yeah I guess Im gona have to buy a copy online if I want the original version but I dont have I credit card, only the card for my bank so... Id rather have voice in english then the text cuz if the voice still in french it would serve no purpose. But still thanks to you two.

You can use the card of your bank (debit card i presume?) online. All popular online marketplaces allow you to use your debit card. I suggest signing up to Amazon.com or eBay, (would be http://www.ebay.ca or http://www.ebay.com in your area) you'll also need a PayPal account to set up your funding source as many sellers use PayPal as their preferred method of payment. You can always find better deals online, guaranteed. Hope this helps at all.

PayPal also offers a 'credit card' that accesses your PayPal funds. I have one and it works like a charm. Works like a Mastercard at any store that accepts them.. be aware that you can only spend what you put into the account (much like a bank debit card)...

 

OR... go the "pre-paid" credit card route. There's always alternatives for e-commerce

That there is. Online shopping offers many different innovative ways to shop to get exactly what you want. Tons of options ranging from Credit Card, Wire Transfer, E-Gold, PayPal etc. gives the e-commerce a sense of convenience and reliability. Of course, the things to watch out for when shopping online is pirate companies (selling dodgy goods), fraudsters (unsafe websites that 'claim' to be safe from hackers, basically your financial or worse your identoty information can be stolen this way). Stick with well known websites such as Amazon, eBay or Game etc. and you'll be fine.

That wouldn't work or be meaningful in this case. The language converter only fixes localized substrings in ExoLocString fields in the DLG files. These are not used by the standard game files since those keep all the text in the dialog.tlk file instead. Thus you'll need to modify or switch the dialog.tlk file instead to modify the text.

 

But since that doesn't affect the voiceover getting an English copy of the game is the best solution, if possible. Fortunately the games should be fairly cheap nowadays since they are a few years old.

Tchhh, well i didn't know that Stoffe, i haven't used it before so i just assumed it could handle language conversion with the DLG files, so thanks for putting my nOObness straight

It doesn't translate anything, it just makes so that text in mods created for the English version of the game shows up in games with other languages (or vice versa). Normally if you play a mod made for the English version with for example the French version of the game all text added by that mod would not be shown in-game since the game would look for strings from the wrong language. The Language Converter moves the text to different language strings so the game uses it.

They also sell the English version in Québec (they do have to offer the French version for sale if it exists but nothing prevents them from selling the English version as well). Try a different store. If you happen to be in the Montreal area, it should be fairly easy to find (I found English versions at both Futureshop and EB games).
