... Best crime game ever made...

Anyway, The Getaway is a British crime game, set in London, and one of the best as well, it was originally going to come out for the PlayStation I but they decided to hold that back, and make it for the PlayStation II, and I bought the game, played it for a few minutes and I was in to the game right away, one of the best games I have ever played in the past 5 years....

Then the sequel Black Monday, came out in 2005, and I liked the tone and theme of it, though I was disappointed, with how short the game was, I mean I could complete it in one day...

Anyway it was still a great game, liked how the plot and story was, and Mitch was one of my most favorite characters in the game.

Anyway, have any of you ever played it before?

The first game was a masterpiece. The gameplay was sorta the weakest point. Since you couldn't jump (Meaning you couldn't explore roof tops) and you were practically driving blind in the entire city except for the turn signals. Though I loved how it didn't have a HUD and had quite realistic graphics. The gangster plotline was superb and well scripted. I especially liked how Mark Hammond and Frank Carter were both completely opposite to each other and had different gameplay mechanics.

The Getaway was a good carjacking game. The second wasn't as good and I didn't really like it. I truely enjoyed the trailer for the Getaway 3. Though I was very disappointed that it was canceled.

No, GTA 4 is.

Indeed it is! The Getaway is nothing more than a pale shadow of GTA. It almost immediately in my view joined the long list of games that tried to match GTA and failed miserably.

I only liked the Carter story arc, as it was something different. I was really disappointed with the free play mode - no sooner did you get yourself a nice car (or find the tank) than it was time to turn it off, and all was lost! Same as Mafia on PS2 in that respect.

Anyway, GTA is the god(father) of all crime games, The Getaway...isn't so much.:xp:

What do you mean it was time to turn it off? Plus there was a tank? Where was it?

Anyway if you compare the Getaway to the Grand Theft Auto game of the time (Vice City) it is very hard to out match each other. The Getaway had superb graphics and storyline compared to Vice City. While Vice city had better game play. In Vice City it is much easier to buy an M4 and unload it into thousands of people. While the Getaway's gameplay was carjacking and outrunning cops and gangsters. Vice City also parodied the Getaway in a mission at one point. (Similar to how GTA III parodied Driver 2)

Also GTA IV came out like 5 years after the Getaway. Cut it some slack. GTA IV borrowed some game play elements from the Getaway. Like getting damage when hit by cars and breakable windows.

I mean that by the time I had done all that, I invariably had to go and do something else - homework, etc.

I think the tank was in a little fenced-off area in Hyde Park. Can't remember if it could shoot though.

One of the best elements of GTA was the complete freedom of it all. Do a mission, or drive around aimlessly. Buy a cheap M4 and shoot lots of people if you really feel the need to.:D

The Getaway just didn't have that to it.

No, the Getaway stole elements from GTA, not the other way around. Lots of games had breakabale windows, and damage to cars has been around forever, it was in GTA WAY before the Getaway.

Still a great game though...

Yeah but the Getaway was the first to introduce more realistic effects with it's carjacking then GTA. It took GTA 5 years to introduce more realistic ways you could do what you wanted. GTA didn't have breakable windows or hiding behind cover until GTA IV. Before in GTA all you did was open a car door and drive off in it. Or with carjacking all you did was pull the person out of the car. But Mafia you actually took a gun out and threatened someone with it. As well you could duck behind cover and when you got shot you had blood wounds. All of those were borrowed in GTA IV

Though yes the Getway did steal elements from GTA. But so did a lot of games like Mafia. (Mafia was a very superb game by the way)

Yes Mafia was a very, VERY good game, but I wouldn't say Thje Getaway is the best crime game ever. Not by a longshot.

And yes, I admit it took a while for GTA to introduce more realicism, but honestly, since when are games realistic? Even the really realistic games aren't that realistic, so lets just say the Getaway is an awesome game, but GTA 4's better ;)

Eh agreed. Anyway to stray on topic.

I wonder why they decided to cancel the Getaway 3? It looked very promising from the trailer.
