Astor's Little Men... (28mm miniatures)

Recommended Posts

So aside from map making, my other 'artsy' hobby is painting wargames miniatures... I don't get to game much with them, but I enjoy painting them. I don't play very often, but I'm a big fan of Warhammer Historical: Legends of the Old West (LOTOW), and the Lord of the Rings miniatures games.

So, here's some of my LOTOW Outlaw Posse (individual gang pics are hidden, so they don't take up much space):

Firstly, the whole gang together:

John 'Black Jack' Bernard Carson, leader of Black Jack's Aces:

And lastly, Ed Younger:

I'll post some of my Lord of the Rings miniatures when I can find them... :xp:

The Uruk-Hai Captain's name is Lurtz.

That is true, but this one isn't Lurtz - in the game, you can have unnamed captains - of which he is one. I've got Lurtz somewhere...

Is is difficult to paint such small figurines?

It is at first, but after practice, it becomes easier - over the years i've been doing it i've picked up a lot of hints, tips and techniques that both improve my overall quality, and the time it takes.

Also, it depends on how they're going to be used - 'Game quality' is good enough for the tabletop - so they look alright from 3-4ft away. 'Show quality' is really trying to bring life to them - making them look as good as possible, and takes time. Aragorn took me around 5 hours to get right. In those same five hours I can get a detachment of Confederate Cavalry done at a table quality.

If i'm painting huge numbers of troops - such as a load of Gondorian troops, or Colonial Militia, then they'll be game quality. For individual figures, heroes and commanders, they're usually show quality - they often need to stand out compared to the ordinary troops.

For instance - Gandalf is 'show quality', while the Gondorian Soldier next to him is 'game quality':

And the same with the Uruk-Hai:

Very impressive display you have, Astor. Was it alot of fun collecting and getting them together or were they pre-assembled?

These ones are all single part, white metal figures, but Games Workshops flagship ranges (40k and Fantasy) are usually made up of multi-part figures that allow for variability in the figures. I'll try and get some pictures up of a few of them. And yes, I find it very fun... I don't play very much, but I find the painting to be very relaxing.

Here's some Sci-Fi 'Space Marines' from Gamesworkshop - I don't really collect them anymore. There was a time when Games Workshop was THE big thing in terms of my hobby, but now i've moved onto other manufacturers, and historical periods instead of fantasy and sci-fi. Anyways:

I've got some more Western stuff in the works, including some tie-ins to my 'McLaine' stories.
