My New Adventure Game: Doug's Moai Adventure

Happy Memorial Day (to those of you in the United States). The adventure I've been working on for the past few months, Doug's Moai Adventure, can be downloaded here: (sorry about linking to a forum post, but I don’t think my web provider allows hotlinking of large files, the “here” in the linked forum won’t lead you to yet another forum, I promise). :)

I put in a bunch of jokes (including a bunch of in-jokes for LucasArts and Telltale games) for pretty much every interaction (it has a verb coin, which can be selected by holding down the right mouse button, the left mouse button toggles the inventory). This is the first adventure game I've created since 1997, so even though it's short (as was the aforementioned game), I'm proud to be able to release it into the wild. Enjoy!

Say whaaaat? I unzipped it all and ran doug.bat but the console was all:

C:\Games\Doug>doug.bat

C:\Games\Doug>moai-untz.exe adventure
C:\Games\Doug\lua\metalua\compiler.lua:2: module 'metalua.mlc' not found:
       no field package.preload['metalua.mlc']
       no file '/usr/share/lua/5.1/metalua\mlc.luac'
       no file '/usr/local/lib/lua/5.1/metalua\mlc.luac'
       no file '.\metalua\mlc.lua'
       no file 'C:\Games\Doug\lua\metalua\mlc.lua'
       no file 'C:\Games\Doug\lua\metalua\mlc\init.lua'
       no file 'C:\Games\Doug\metalua\mlc.lua'
       no file 'C:\Games\Doug\metalua\mlc\init.lua'

       no file 'C:\Games\Doug\metalua\mlc.dll'
       no file 'C:\Games\Doug\loadall.dll'
       no file '.\metalua.dll'
       no file 'C:\Games\Doug\metalua.dll'
       no file 'C:\Games\Doug\loadall.dll'

       .\src/install_meta.lua:4 in main chunk
       [C] in function 'require'
       adventure:3 in main chunk

And I was like "wtf m8?". Ain't got no metalua folder. Ain't got no DLLs except glut32.dll. I have got lua\metalua but that contains mlc.luac, not mlc.lua. If I rename mlc.luac to mlc.lua then it gets past that error but just gets onto a different one.

Then I gave up!

Am I being a big thicky mcthick from thicktown?

Thanks for trying to try out my game, and sorry about all the trouble. :(

And thanks for pointing this out. It's not just you, as I pulled an old laptop out of storage so I could test it on another computer, and I get the error on that machine as well. I'm working on figuring out what's wrong, and I'll let you know when I do.

Thanks for pointing this out, and sorry for the inconvenience. This is my first time using Moai, so everything's new to me.

I shifted some files around and added the LUA executables to the zip file, so if you download it again, it should hopefully work fine now. Let me know if there's any more problems, and thanks for trying it out. :)

Same ****, different day, I'm afraid. Well, not quite the same ****. Similar ****. Definitely a different day though.

Weirdly the question mark in no file 'lua?.1metalua\... looks like a clubs symbol in the DOS window. Like you'd find on a playing card.

When I tried your last one, I got to your page on another forum with a big picture of a little green dude and three moais, with a red wormhole over the middle one. And an orange towel on the ground. Is this your game? I wasn't able to play it, because I have no mouse.

I'm using an apple I-pad running OS 5.1, if that affects anything.

Can you try copying metalua from c:\doug\lua\metalua to c:\doug\lua\5.1\metalua

If that works, I'll update the archive, and thanks a lot for testing this out for me. :)

Too bad I've already asked "how can the same **** happen to the same guy twice?" because this time it's literally true. I get the same thing as on 31st May, right down to the playing card thing.

It's weird. Some people are able to play it and some aren't (I asked for advice over at the Moai forums, and they were all able to play it o_O).

I've decided to just port this over to a more stable engine (I'm going to go for Wintermute probably, for the ScummVM support). That should hopefully let you play on iOS too, Zoom Rabbit.

Thanks so much for trying this out, and sorry it has been so much trouble so far. I'll post here once the Wintermute version is done (hopefully it won't take too long, since it's just coding, since all the art, story, and sound assets are already done).
