My board fried my chip :(

I bought an ASUS A7A266 in late december, but it sayed in my closet for a couple months before I bought the chip (AMD Athlon XP 1700).

I put the thing to gether and the board fried the chip and killed it's self the first time I turned it on. It never even posted. There is nothing like the smell of silicon jell being melted to make you rather angry.

Fortunately for me, this was a documented (unofficialy) problem by ASUS. I'm getting a replacement chip and board (They' fixed the problem since when I bought my board). I was lucky becauce the same thing has happened to the dealer and and helped me get my replacemant board.

I'm curious, did anyone else have any problems with this board when the XPs first came out? Has anyone tried to use an ASUS A7A266 with a XP bought recently? Were the BIOS currant out of the box?

I just built an nForce system. I also built some other systems, never using the Asus board you're talking about though, and I never had any problems.

You have to be really carefull with the heatsink though, make sure you don't crush the core while puting in on the CPU and make sure it makes full contact with the core... otherwise you will fry your CPU again, XP's get really hot really fast.

But they're the best CPU's around!

me and my roomate have put together 3 or 4 systems in the last couple months and have never had any problem frying stuff... we have used ECS, MSI (nForce), and Tian (not my fav) mobo's. although i have to say, ASUS would not be my first choice for a mobo... in our experiance ECS and MSI are pretty good buys for the dollar concious person... i havent read up much on the high end boards... its really a shame about the athlon processor... hope it works out good :)

That's bad news for me, then...because my PC supplier just replaced my old Chaintech board with an Asus A7A266... This does not bode well, because I was considering upgrading to an XP processor in the near future. What was that about the BIOS? Was that the reason why your chip fried? I'd appreciate any and all information (including links) on this problem, because it may mean I need to get myself a new board after all...

Sorry to hear about your PC woes, ToRMeNt. You definitely have my sympathy. ;)

Thanks bro. Anyways they gave me my replacement board yesterday and it's up and running just fine with an athlon xp 1700.

I did notice some physical differances between the a7a266 had before and the one I have now. The one I have now has 8 or 10 dip switches and the one I had before had only 4 or 6. Also look on your board, mine says "revision 1.04."

How ago was your mb changed? The problem has been corrected by ASUS in the newer boards. The on that blew up was made in december, but this one was prolly made early feb.
