Mara-Jade
I may have a clue whats the cause of MP freezes and sound loops. when I run dxdiag, it tells me in the network tab that some registry component for directplay is missing or damaged for JK2. I reinstalled the game 2 times but it didnt change. anyone else have this?

Mulletpowerx88
Ok, I know this post is a little old, but I assume you guys are still having problems. I've been having these probs myself, so after much experimentation and dog-kicking, here's my solution. First: system specs: Gateway (diediediedie) Intel P4 1.4 Visiontek Geforce 3 512 mb Ram SOundblaster Live Value What I did in order. 1. Went into sound in control panel, audio, advanced, properties, turn the tab all the wasy down to emulation 2. unistalled Jedi Knight 3. install NVidia Drivers 29.42 4. Reinstalled DirectX 8.1 5. Restarted 6. Installed game 7. Patched game to 1.04 8. Held breath 9. Screamed with delight Hope this helps some of you, I've been playing for an hour without a freeze, post your response. Mulletpowerx88
Demolisher, never give up! It took me weeks to figure it out. No two systems are exactly the same, just keep playing around with different settings, it worked for me.
Ashby
OK, add me to the freezing list as well. Surely LucasArts isn't expecting every game player to be a computer specialist. Most of my readers (I'm a journalist) certainly aren't. I've had my bit of uninstalling, reinstalling, ugrading etc. So where's the patch, Lucas? RioMo
Freezers, I'm still freezing and I don't know if it will help but this updated version of DirectX may be our solution. I'm betting it's not but you never know. Anybody who can, please test this and remember...install your video drivers and then DirectX8.1b. Sincerely, JediKnightII Junkee/ JediKnightIIFreezehater

Magic226
I had the freezing problem for ages untill I disabled the GLextensions and then it worked fine. Only now the problems worse. Mobile Forces and F12002 demo are crashing in the same way. Is there any way to solve this. I'm really lost this time...
RioMo
Well first, let me drop one BIG F-bomb. The new DirectX drivers didn't work and I'm officially over the limit on frustration. I still think that it's coming back to a heating problem. If anybody's wondering my specs are: Athlon 1.4 G Thunderbird Abit KT-7 Raid Motherboard 256 PC133 Ram Plenty of Fans. VIA KT-133 Chipset Windows 2000 Professional Connection: DSL PNY GeForce3 64MB Video Card Did I leave anything out??????? I've honestly tried everything so if anybody can help drop me a note at rio1morales@hotmail.com Thanks and happy gaming, (F***ing Freezeups) Rio
er583
The thing about Jedi Knight II is it worked for me until I got to like Chapter 18. Now I suffer from the freeze problem too (XP, Asus A7A266, Athlon XP 1800, Creative Geforce2 Pro). The freezes all started for me AFTER I installed Warcraft III, which incidently sufferes from the same problem. I'm certain this is not a heating issue, because a) the game crashes too quickly (< 5 mins), b) I have played the game for hours without it crashing, and I can play UT for hours WITHOUT any problems. I'm pretty certain its a DirectX/Open GL problem. I know there is the new Q321178 patch (which I have heard doesn't work). But tonight I'm gonna get medieval on there ass and try the Direct X 8.1b URL is: http://download.microsoft.com/download/DirectX/Install/8.1b/W982KMeXP/EN-US/DirectX%208.1b%20Redist%20Package.EXE which is a 25 Mb download, but it allegedly patches DirectX to 8.1b. It is a MSDN patch which gaming companies are supposed to incorporate into their games.

er583
Okay dudes, I ran the big fat directX8.1b http://download.microsoft.com/download/DirectX/Install/8.1b/W982KMeXP/EN-US/DirectX%208.1b%20Redist%20Package.EXE and then installed the Q321178 (which just patches one file) <-- AMD processors only. This iz the one u need The thing is it worked. The thing is it worked. The thing is it worked. This is DEFINITELY a DirectX Issue. Because for me the problems started after I installed Warcraft III. The patches from Microsoft worked. Basically you should check this file -----> d3d8.dll: 5.01.2600.0044 English Final Retail 5/6/2002 13:51:28 1180672 bytes <------ That is the version that works for me as reported in Q321178. Email me if you want more info..... gotta go kill some pathetic storm troopers. <edit> I've a long post a bit after this one but you can just go here to find out more The Filez That Stopped The Freeze </edit>
er583
A link to the files you need That's a link to the files that I used, they fixed me up nice. I can't promise that those links will be there forever, but certainly up for a week or so (depending on traffic). If possible, use the Microsoft link for the DirectX8.1b patch, their server is about as fast as mine Here are the contents of the above link.. if it pastes nice, cool <paste> The big thaw: stop freezing in Jedi Knight II These two files ended the freeze in Jedi Knight II. My freeze was characterised by the following it happened every time I started a game always < 5 minutes both multi-player and single player mode the freeze manifests itself with a sound loop, and ONLY a hard boot recovers. My spec My machine is based on an AMD Athlon XP 1800+, ASUS A7A266 motherboard, Creative Audigy, Creative Geforce Pro I should also mention that JKII worked fine for me up until about Chapter 18. I installed Warcraft III, and the #### hit the fan. Take from that what you will. Once I had the freeze problem, the game froze regardless of video or audio settings, 640*480, no OpenGL extensions, sound on low quality etc.. all still crashed. Notes Note that my motherboard uses an ALi chipset (not Via). I am running the latest Nvdia, Ali and Audigy Drivers. My machine is also upto date accoring to WindowsUpdate. Post patch I can now play the game using any settings I like, including EAX etc., The two files I basically ran DirectX8.1b and then the Q321178 patch. To be honest I'm not sure if DirectX8.1b did anything, but run it just to make sure everything is cool. DirectX 8.1b Redist Package.exe download: DirectX 8.1b Redist Package.exe This is from MSDN the original file can be found at http://download.microsoft.com/download/DirectX/Install/8.1b/W982KMeXP/EN-US/DirectX%208.1b%20Redist%20Package.EXE. The accompanying page is http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/default.asp?url=/downloads/topic.asp?URL=/msdn-files/028/000/114/topic.xml. (IE only, use menu item labelled "Microsoft DirectX 8.1b Redist Install") Q321178_WXP_SP1_x86_ENU.exe download: Q321178_WXP_SP1_x86_ENU.exe. Read Q321178 in the Microsoft knowledgebase I can't remember where I found the actual file (some gaming site). I can't find it on the Microsoft website anymore. d3d8.dll: 5.01.2600.0044 English Final Retail 5/6/2002 13:51:28 1180672 bytesNote the version number is changed from 5.01.2600.0000 to 5.01.2600.0044 Let me know you can email me. (Use default subject "Jedi Knight Freeze" or mail will be deleted). </paste> A link to the files you need

RioMo
The patch file will NOT execute on 2000. Some error about different platforms. I don't know what I'll do.
