DarthVenom
Just wondering what your opinions are on that! With the way technology is progressing, and their cult status worldwide, i reckon they could be one day... probably be banned though...
Lionen
Whats the point of that? If they would exist, they would still be useless in a war, since in Star Wars, only jedi can handle them good enough to make them dangerous. But for even producing one at all.... i believe that it might be possible to a variant of them in the furture, as from what i have understood, laser is just a hot beam of energy, and that doesn sound too complicated. But it´s probably impossible to do such things that is used in Star Wars, since they use crystals and other SciFi components...
Jaster21801
I think they COULD make it, but it wouldn't be practical... who's gonna be fighting with melee and close range weapons in the future? Even now we send robots and bombs to do our dirty work
DarthVenom
Maybe the future will be a more civilised age! I mean i can just see a bank robber challenging the manager to a duel for all the cash, lol I accept they would be useless as a weapon in the real world, but they could be used in a Sport like fencing.... obviously they'd have to be extremly weak in power, otherwise people would be getting their hands and arms chopped off all the time! Possibly you could wear a suit to register hits or something...
Vestril
I always figured that they would make replicas, like they can't cut through anything, they're basically just flashy baseball bats, but geeks like us can have REALLY real looking lightsaber fights with 'em Nerfsabers, or somethign like that
Norin Radd
I'm sure it could be done, it's just a question of who would be willing to go to the expense and time it would take to develop one?
Zindell
whoever did would get rich in a heartbeat i bet.

Kyle d'Tana
it can become reality!!! But the costs and time to develop?????
The Vehicular Jedi
Well, just a note. This actual discussion came up on TLC (TheLearningChannel for those of you who might not get it). They were discussing with several scientists how it would be plausible to create such a device. Several facts came up. One, which is stated in the Star Wars guide to weapons, indicated that the emitter would need to be negatively charged on one half and positively charged on the other. The inherent problem is negatively and positively charging a laser beam (according to the panel on this show). They went on, most of which i can't remember anymore, but the same thing came up: they could be possible, but it is extremely unlikely that they would have the same look, same sounds, and same function. mez1109
Dosn't the light in the light saber come from the FORCE inside the Jedi, or can a Storm Trooper buy one and kick as well? Any-way, laser gun are useless, I dought a Jedit can stop several thousands of bullets being shot at them, their not that fast. But the light saber can be sold as a knife that cuts anything, the light that kills flies (whatever its called), a barbeque stick cook or for doner kababs, a very good water boiler or even a night light. leXX
I bet a rich Star Wars nerd somewhere who really really wants one will invest a lot of money into developing one and so one day the Light Saber will be a reality! I read today that Australian scientists claim to have conducted the first significant teleportation - reducing an object to its smallest components and recreating it some distance away. If they have already done that - I see a lot of stuff from sci fi films in the very near future!
Havoc Stryphe
Check out this page (And the rest of the site), it uses all forms of Star Wars media to discuss the workings of a Lightsaber. Towards the bottom of the page it gives possible scientific models to explain and possibly produce and manufacture a lightsaber in the future giving the right amount of theoretical technology. Frizbee
Well, seeing as how we can now teleport solid matter in a way similar to the transporters on Star Trek, why not in the future be able to make Light Sabers too... seems likely to me.

ET Warrior
I think a lightsaber that had an extendable energy blade but was unable to cut through anything would be the coolest! I mean, it would be the ultimate star wars geek toy to have! Dueling with fellow geeks would be great!
MotionMan
Ya I would duel against trekie geeks. Blocking their phasor shots and taking their heads off. Mace Windu style:cool:
covenant_bad
It would be really cool to make a lightsaber but at the moment there are so many gaps in being able to do it. The easy part is to create a beam, although this cannot be light which a laser can provide. Instead Jedi use crystals Which can be made to give out energy by compressing them but only in tiny proportions this could oneday be possibly increased. The hardest part i would imagine would be creating a beam which would suddenly stop at the end for no reason. Lightsabers all have a set length and this defys the laws of physics and either A. the beam runs out of energy at the end and stops or B. all the energy if focused through the crystal to that point. I hope that this helps anyone who was thinking of building a saber in their basement. ''may the force be with you''
Lime-Light
I've aready built one. I use it to give hair cuts and hold up banks.
doctornick
It defies the laws of physics. THe only way to stop the beam would be to have a virtual gravity well. Light beams have wave/particle duality but are not polarisable. Gravity would be hte only thing to affect them. Visible light would also not have the energy to cut through things. Ultra violet lasers are used as cutting tools but these are of alot higher energy then visible light. X-rays or gamma photons could be usd, but these are impossible to stop totally, and therefore the blade would be of infinite length. Also, about the teleportation thing, heisenburgs uncertainty principle will mean that teleportation is almost impossible. It may be possible with 1 atom but anything above that would be so unlikely that it couldn't happen. Because electrons can behave as waves as well as leptons there postition around nucleons cannot be determined, and therefore can be anywhere at once. There would therefore be no way of rearranging the atoms in the exact order that they appear in the original. A lightsaber would be damned cool, but creating one would cause a paradox that would destroy the universe, as all laws of physics would be defied. Only t the speed of light does physics as we know it cease to exist. Just me two pence (i'm British)
ET Warrior
eeeeeehhhhhhhhhh, science..mumbo jumbo....*urk* although the lightsaber is not a beam of light.....it's a beam of energy.....so your light argument doesn't quite work out.
