What truly is killing JK Outcast online MP...

Bird Of Prey!

Recommended Posts

I've read many posts on JK2 forums complaining about the lack of JK2 MP players and servers. The posts blame many different things for the decrease in servers. Here is a list of the top 4 reasons:

1) Boredom with the game.

2) The patches (1.03, 1.04).

3) Other new PC game releases (Warcraft 3).

4) Too many mods, skins, etc. = too long of a D/L.

Although many of these reasons may be legitimate, I don't think that they are the main reason that the number of servers have decreased.

I think the primary reason relates to the unreliable Raven server. When I first started playing JKII, I never had difficulty getting "A New List" in my "Join Game - Internet" list. In the past 2 to 3 weeks it seems that the "Internet" server list will not refresh. At first I noticed it every 2 to 3 days, lately it is a nightly occurence.

A player cannot join, or start, a server if the main game server is down (Raven). In addition, many people aren't familiar with Gamespy so they just give up.

Just my observations and 2 cents worth!

Maybe, some of the uprightsous noobs are driving them away.

- Players come on.

- Noobs come on.

- Noobs annoy the #### out of players.

- Players think, screw this, lets play another game.

- Less JK2 players.

By noobs I mean the people you taunt other players and who play dishonorabally. Such as, you bow, they attack you and they call you a noob for bowing.

Another thing is a lot of people only play certain servers when playing JK2, and many are passworded like my server where our order of 30+ plays JK2 everyday, along with certain individuals that have the pword because they can play well with others. Our order chose this route (private server) for many reasons.

JK2 is like any other multi-player game. It has its pluses and minuses and different opinions of what is the best game type to play. Couple that with jerks and dweeboids on the public servers and there is less activity....on public servers.

The real reason is that there is just too many a$$holes. People who don't play to play but to win. If we had nicer people then I'm sure people wouldn't mind playing mp. That and people don't roleplay. Roleplaying keeps a game fresh and new. Adds a sense of realism to the game. Give it a try. Get together with some people. Make a clan or something....and pass on your combat knowledge to your padawan. Then you guys can go to the servers and kick some a$$. It really is fun. Well, I've ranted enough for now. You guys/ ladies take it easy. :)

No biggie, you just watch. Things are going to pick up the closer we get to Christmas. JK2 is going to be the only recent Star Wars game on the computer game shelves. It'll sell like hotcakes. :)

Actually friend. Galaxies is hoping to go live by christmas. So JK2 might be non existant by then. (hopefully not).

i agree. ppl, if the servers are down go play on Microsoft's Zone Network. if your still bored, go start or play an RPG. Personally im working on a mod for rpgers that will help improve rpg gameplay (i shouldnt have said that..)

as far as n00bs go.. they give jedi knight 2 a bad name. i bow in all of my fights and as far as killing me while i bow, thats a daily thing. script n00bs, a daily thing. ive pretty much quit playing on internet servers because they polluted with n00bs. i only play with the ppl on zone now because they are actually a nice community.

Is it? I haven't been paying attention, my crap-o-filter takes out about 95% of all the SWG news. Does it have a set date or is that just an estimate?

Sides, that's making two BIG assumations: A) It isn't pushed back more. and B) a clean, functional grand opening. Knowing the way publishers are, I'd bet it'll be in stores but it wouldn't be playable til January at the earilist. Sides, it's a MMORPG a totally different group of people play those things. While, yes, it does sound worth checking out. Even thou I'm pretty sure it's just a dressed up version of EQ. :)

Actually, it's not always bad for a game to lose some players:

It leaves the hardcore players left, not the noobs.

Check out aliens vs predator 2 to see what I mean, though it *still* has it's share of a-holes.

It usually leaves a rock-solid core of determined players left that share their true love of the game.

this game will not die. there are too many people playing it that play it for the fun of it. your server refreshing problem may not have anything to do with raven. i experienced the same problems with the server list refreshing intermittently, and tried everything from calling raven tech support to pulling my hair out. the only thing that worked (unfortunatley) was to reinstall my os (win98se). now it works like a charm, and i havent had the same problem since. also, one way to deal with you problem if you dont want to wipe your physical disk is to make a list of favorites that you can browse when you are having the problem. bottom line, this game is too kewl, regardles of the retarded patches. if you can find one fun person to play with, it makes all the difference, and the game will stay fun indefinately.

Personally what ruins it for me is....

push and pull

I'm serious. I walk into a room and immediatly get push and pulled 10 times from 10 different people until I fall. I had to put my points into push and pull JUST to counter it...so I can't use anything else.

Any map...walk around, PUSH PUSH PULL PULL PULL PULL PUSH PULL, per person. It's pathetic...not like Star Wars at all. They should have put a delay on re-using it, or decrease the range.

Other than that, as long as I join a REAL saber damage server, the game is fine. The master server gets annoying at times.

Nothing wrong with slaying bots at home ... lotsa fun without having to deal with the pros/noobs/etc!

I bought this game the day it came out and loved the sp campaign. The mp was pretty good but soon turned into a DFA fest. Ok, i figured, give it a few patches and I'll be back. I wasn't bitter, I realise what a nightmare it must be to balance so many different gameplay elements with everybody and his dog trying to find something to exploit for easy kills.

I came back just a s the 1.04 patch was being released. The new cvars allow for making some interesting changes ... I personally love turning up the saber damage by a factor of 2, turning on dismemberment, turning down the blocking and playing all weapon ffa/teamffa with my bots ... what a hoot!

There are a number of issues driving ppl away from this game in my opinion.

- the default mods should work well at the default settings (no extra cvars should need to be set). This way, ppl know what to expect when they join a server.

-duel mod is a lovely idea but who wants to wait while other ppl fight? Why not just allow more than one duel at a timein a ffa game. This is avaiable in some of the new mods but again, this should be a default setting. Has been working very well for Heretic2 for 3+ years now.

-there are a lot of skins/mods/bots/maps scattered all over the place with all sorts of different versions as well as beta versions. This is a real mess. I would love to see someone maintain a collection of the worthwhile skins/maps/bots. This would encourage the ppl submitting the skins/maps/bots/etc to finish them properly or else they wouldn't be included in the collections.

Anyway, just a few thoughts from someone who really wants this game be what we all know it can be.

I've seen some very nice points, especially taboo. But really all you have to do is find some nice people on the forums/elsewhere and become friends. Make a game and play with just them. Someone you can trust. Someone who won't use that damned force push/pull all of the time. A game is defined by the people who play it, and if I were to be playing with any of you this would be one of the best mp versions of a game I have ever encountered. This game needs more true players. Not people who play to win but people who play to have fun. Anyways that's my meaningless point... heh, you guys have a good one. :)
