Why do people diss EU?

well, i used to read the EU alot and it was very comforting to know stuff about characters that wasn't in the movies, BUT....

all that changed when I watched AOTC, I felt betrayed , I spent all this time and money reading stuff and then finding out that it was not true, owen lars, boba fett, the origin of the deathstar. I realized that the EU is just a way for bad authors to exploit and make money of the starwars universe.

My thouths on what you said:

EU is a bad way to spend your money

It is entertaining, plus the NJO serious is a lot better than anything Lucas can come up with on da big screen.

It is true now that the past about Owen Lars and Boba Fett are now trash, Jester Meel never existed and Obi-Wan has no brother he knows about. That sucks. That is why i hate what lucas did: he wrecked his own franchise. THAT SUCKS.

I've never understood why people feel that AoTC somehow makes null the origins of the Death Star in the Jedi Academy Trilogy. All we see in Ep II is that Dooku has the plans to the station, and as I remember all he says is something to the effect of "They must not find our plans for the ultimate weapon." Dooku could have just gone to the Maw installation for all we know, recieved the plans, and was taking them to Sidious for approval.

It just takes a little imagination; in the end what we read could be true, from a certain point of view. :)

I'm sorry to say this, but ep3 will f*ck this up even more.

BTW, exactly how did lucas "wreck his own franchise"? I believed it was the EU-writers that wrecked it more than anything.

Well it doesnt matter casue it was Lucas's trilogy to begin with, he does what he wants to do, those EU writers(and all other writers of those star wars books) for all i am concerned are crap, i mean i just read like a thread and it said Chewbacca was killed in a later novel because a MOON fell on him, A FREAKIN MOON. That is the most rediculous thing i have ever heard. So i just mostly disreguard the stupid EU crap and stick to the trilogy(all though some of the stories are interesting but when they directly connect into the main trilogy i disreguard them). That is my opinion.

EU isn't cannon, and this is why I hate the EU is because people bitch and mone when The EU is ****ed up by George Lucas. You might want to remember than Star Wars is George Lucas' and not some damn EU author's.

EU is NOT crap.

First, the EU as we know it today was started in Heir to the Empire.. BEFORE Lucas decided to start back with the prequel trilogy. In fact, the sucess of Mr. Zahn's books, convinced Uncle George that the fire had not totally gone out by 1990. This trilogy of books and Dark Horse's Dark Empire was the first authorized license since the Marvel comics series ended.

It has been said by several of the authors that they are fans too. And I've read in several acknowlegements to the EU books "thanks to George Lucas for allowing us to play in his back yard". It has also been said by these authors, most notably Kevin J. Anderson and Timothy Zahn that they were writing these licensed books knowing full well that George had the right to use their characters as he saw fit or not at all. And if he contradicted their stories, that was done with the knowledge that it was HIS story to begin with.

That being said, Mr. Lucas has borrowed from the EU. Timothy Zahn coined the name "Coruscant". Exar Kun in the Tales of the Jedi series was the first to have a dual blade lightsaber and the Twilek jedi Aayla Secura was taken from the comics at the last minute and used as a Jedi extra in the Genosis arena battle.

Remember, Splinter of the Mind's Eye by Alan Dean Foster was a great book in it's time. It was written before TESB and much of it was contradicted. Was there any harm done?

So if Mr. Lucas EVER decides to do the final trilogy, IF Han and Leia get married, they might not even have children. Luke and new female character x may be the first in the family to do so.

Not harm done..

Actually the way in which Chewie goes out is quite admirable and heroic. Try reading something before you have an opinion.

I'm not bitching, nor am I moaning. I for one don't believe that any large part of the EU has been negated. And that's a pretty ridiculous reason to dislike the EU, simply because people object to it being overwritten.

"Well I can't really say anything about EU yet. I've heard good things and bad thing. I bought one today called "I,Jedi". Have any of you read it? I bought because I thought it look pretty cool. "

Well in my ever so humble opinion you made a very good choice; that just happens to be one of my favorites. If you particularly like Corran Horran (the protaganist of the novel) and you enjoy starfighter battles, I would reccomend giving the X-Wing series a try in the future.

not all that much of EU contradicts the cannon stuff, much of it can be explained with a little twist of the imagination.

and for you people that get mad at the EU authors for "ruining" GL's franchise YOU ARE SO WRONG! GL gave permission to EACH AND EVERY AUTHOR, HE TOLD THEM TO GO WITH IT. IF HE DIDNT LIKE ONE OF THE BOOKS STORYLINES OR THOUGHT IT WAS CONTRADICTORY HE COULDVE TOLD THEM NOT TO WRITE IT BUT HE DIDNT BECAUSE GL LOVES THE EU AND THE MONEY IT MAKES FOR HIM.

BAH, you people who do nothing but flame the EU because you cant read really piss me off (no offense to all of you but a fair number of EU trashers are full of crap and have no idea what they are saying).

i thought that at least on the lucasforums people would have more respect for the EU as it is GL's creation. he may not have written the EU books but he had ultimate say and he decided that it was good. so boohoo if theirs a little bit of contradiction between EU and cannon, NOBODY CARES they are fun to read and interesting which is why people read them, if it doesnt make sense then it doesnt make sense and it wont sell as much as a good book will. you people who flame all the EU need to read it more, once you have read EVERY SINGLE BOOK IN THE EU THEN YOU CAN COMPLAIN ABOUT HOW IT ISNT ANY GOOD, BUT IF ALL YOU'VE READ IS SOME CRAP THAT SOMEBODY THREW TOGETHER ON THE INTERNET THEN YOU DONT HAVE THE RIGHT TO FLAME THE EU OR ITS WONDERFUL AUTHORS.

sorry bout that, bad day. parents got back from london and found the beers...

well anyways some EU does suck i wont argue that nor will i defend it all. some of those authors dont have nearly as much talent as is displayed in the academy wars battle threads. and i understand why some people dislike parts of the EU. i for one will continue reading it as some of it is pure gold. the zahn trilogy was an amazing series that ive read over many times. so please if you are one of the dumb people who flame all the EU just because you read one of the crappier books once go to a library and read some more. or better yet stop flaming. just because you dont like the EU does not give you the right to flame other EU fans. we like it you dont, i know some people who cant stand to eat bread or drink water they just dont like the taste of em. just leave it be that you dont like the EU, you dont need to force your opinions on other people.
