Making a Death Star?

Now, what the hell were they making in the R2D2 flying Scene, the same scene Anakin brackes his light saber and Padme is in hot trouble.

Were they creating pieces of the Death Star, as that is what most of my friends think.

I think, how can you be creating pieces of the Death Star when Dooku actually took the planes to Lord Sidious, and obviously production of the Death Star doesn't start until SW4, or does it start in SW3?

Questions after questions, will it never stop, or will my questions be answered with further questions, forcing me to ask more questions, the only question being will I still be sane? But that is another question isn't it?

There are thousands upon thousands of droids being made.

Did you see the machines that the droid army used in the genosis battle? The one with the 2 big wheels or the huge spider ones?

They were most definatly made in those factories as well.

They hadnt started on the death star yet.

Yes, only one part of the factory, there were also much bigger parts being manufactured, maybe pieces of a space ship

Also...(to make ET happy)...'Poggle the Lesser' says "They must not find our plans for the ultimate weapon." That certainly sounds to me like something that is still in the early stages and isn't already being built.

Legacy has a point. But I think that it will start to be constructed about 1-2 years before a ANH. What was the time that passed between ANH and ROTJ? It couldn't of been more than 2 years. And do you think they had the technology back then? It may of been a decade or two for them to develop the Superlaser on the Death Star. And don't forget that nothing had ever of been constructed that big before. Han said "It's to big to be a spacestation" and when they said Alderann had been destroyed Han said" It would take the whole fleet and a thousand ships with more fire power than I've ever..." so the technology had to of been just developed.

This is why I think they first started working on it just before ep III. You don't build something like this overnight. It takes a long time. The death star in ROTJ was only something like 2/3 of the way done and they knew what they were doing on that one after building the first death star.

According to the timeline in the DarkHorse SW comics, RotJ takes place four years after ANH (ESB is 3 years after, and RotJ is a year later). But anyway... it is possible that the second Death Star had already begun construction before the first one was completed ("Why build one when you could have two for twice the price?). But remember that:

1) the Republic is going to have to be firmly in Palpatine's grasp for him to be able to use its megabucks to begin making a Death Star. He's going to need unsupervised control of the military budget (and a bit more, besides).

2) the Death Star hologram we see in AotC has extranious towers and such (it in fact resembles the original death star concept models I've seen that were made for ANH), so it's not the final design

3) The second Death Star was mostly just a housing for a superlaser, the rest was really just a facade to convince the Rebels that it wasn't completed (because who would finish the superlaser before they were even done with the armor?).

These things would explain why the Death Star's construction might have been delayed and why the second one could be built so quickly.
