Game buying scenario question.

Well, i was just curious so i decided to ask y'all this question. As you know there are many different reasons and times when we buy a game. But my question isn't really that easy to ask straight (i think) so i'll explain some background and then ask.

Scenario 1: New Games

Probably the most common type of game buying reasons. You've heard of a game going to be released and you've had your eye on it for months, and you buy it the day it comes out. And you really dont care what reviewers thing cuz this is a game you WANT!

Scenario 2: Old Games

Much rarer (i think) is when you haven't really got your eye on anything. You've just finished playing the game you've wanted for a long time and are pretty bored, and you think you want to buy that old game you once long ago had your eye on but got pushed aside (or) never thought about, but now it looks interesting. And since its gonna be cheaper anyway, cuz its probably 6-12 months old, you dont mind buying it as an extra passtime.

As we know, Scenario 1 happens A LOT, but my QUESTION to you is: How often does scenario 2 occur with you? and how often do you buy old games?

Thank you all, just something i was interested in, your answers may affect my future :D

hum....I go to the store....look at the shelves and pick what looks appealing or that I have heard good things about. Doesn't really matter how old it is to me - its whether or not its fun, affordable etc. I do like buying games when they first come out...for instance I did that with GB...but the past few games I bought were out for a long time b4 I bought them..(RTCW and RCT).

I just recently picked up a copy of baldurs gate 2 with expansion. It was on sale and I have been starting to play some RGP games now as of recently. The only one that I had before was Dungeon Siege, which I enjoyed, but I wanted to get more into it and I have been told that this is the ultimate of RGP games. I have been looking at NWN and MW, but they both are just too much, and I am planning on saving up for AoM when it comes out.

ok, here's an insight from the other side of your issue. As you may know (or not), I recently left my position at Gamestop, the largest video game retail chain in the States for those who don't know. So, here goes:

Scenario 1...every frickin' day. Especially when the newest "must have" game has come out. Warcraft 3 and NCAA 2003 come immediately to mind.

Scenario 2 is not as rare as you'd think. When I worked, we often had times when someone would trade-in a whole butt-load (and, yes that is a technical term) of games and someone right behind them would want to purchase a game that was just traded in. It's kinda cool how things work out. You go to the store hoping that they have a certain game and lo and behold! The gods are smiling down on you and you get the game you wanted!

(please don't send me hate mail or "You-need-to-go-to-church-before-God-rains-fire-down-upon-your-filthy-heathenistic-soul" pms or e-mails....I meant the video game gods.......religious nutcake....(please don't send me other hate mail for that last remark, I was only joking))

 i know how that feels, when i was living in India, very few, and i mean VERY few PC games ever come out there, and there was this time i wanted Age of Empires after playing the demo, and there was only ONE, yes ONE copy of Age of Empires II for sale in my whole city...(and if you're thinking its the typical "indian" village, then you're mistaken. It was quite a BIG city. 5-6th largest in India, Hyderabad if you want a name) and i managed to lay my hands on it. Certainly there MAY have been another one for sale out there, but in an Indian city there aren't many shops where you can get computer games, cuz they're only popular among the kind of "rich kids" although i'm not that rich :D, and i checked every computer store i knew in town and noone had it, and i finally found it in one store on a high mantlepiece costing a butt load of money equaling 50$ and i got it .....phew...

same with Tony hawk pro skater 2, i wanted to get it, hunted all through the city, but NEVER managed to lay hands on it, now i'm in america but i've lost interest in that game ;)
