Qui-GONE Jinn
Guys: Your opinions are needed, I need to know if this is a good system - especially the motherboard - and how long you think it'll last. C'jais
If you don't care about the price, I'd say you should opt for the Radeon 9700 - it should be able to spank GeForce4's arse severely from what I've heard. And get more RAM if you can afford it - it really all depends on much you're willing to sacrifice in order to get the most state of the art pc... First of all...how long do you want it to last? Secondly...what are you going to be using it for? Is it just for games...or for other things? Thirdly...it looks like a good system for now...but if you're looking at some future-proofing, then I'd recommend waiting for some of the newer standards to get a better foothold and get optimised, such as AGP 8x, Serial ATA, new DDR RAM speeds etc. Serial ATA will definitely be the new standard for hard drives, so if your MoBo doesn't support it, you'll be caught short adding additional (or alternative) hard disks at a later date. I'm holding off upgrading until the middle of 2003...because new technology always seems to be released soon after the Christmas period, and you usually pay more in the run-up to the holiday season anyway. As for the Radeon 9700 Pro...there are still issues with it. Well, I'm having issues with it, anyway. A couple of game demos will not play properly with it...Gothic and Arx Fatalis...and Severance: Blade Of Darkness is also having problems, requiring an OpenGL patch to work properly. This is under Win98SE with the latest Catalyst 2.4 drivers, BTW...I don't know if there would be the same problems under Windows XP. In spite of new drivers, I'm finding the Radeon 9700 a bit glitchy and temperamental. I've also heard that some AGP 8x slots don't like it...or the card itself won't play ball on certain MoBos with this slot. So if you're considering the Radeon card, I'd check that out. My ideal system will include Serial ATA hard drives (which are not currently even on the market), an NV30-based card, bug-free AGP 8x, potentially the new PCI-bus standard if that is implemented next year, and about 1.5 Gigabytes of DDR RAM. Oh...and an Intel 3Ghz processor matched up with an 800Mhz FSB, because I've had nothing but problems with this Athlon-based machine I'm currently using. A lot of this tech should be out by the middle of next year.
lightspeed
It will probably be a good PC. But I really like my new Dell at the moment

BCanr2d2
Try and find a Lite-On CD Burner, they are made by Plextor, and are just rebadged. Plextor is what nearly all the CD-Writing programs use to test their programs.......
Qui-GONE Jinn
Thank you for the feedback guys, it's appreciated. As for now, this is the only system I can afford, as I'm studying. I really need a computer now, and I reckon this will last... well, two-three years? what do you think?
Darth Simpson
Yeah, about 2 years, if you're willing to scale down the graphics as the games become more demanding. But I guess you're already used to that, eh? Always an option to do a continuos update too.
Chewbacco
Daaaaaaaammmmmmmmnnnnnn!!! All these letters and words. I understand it, don't you think I don't. I agree with Simpson. About 2 years fully operational. 3 years tops if you dust it regulary and keep all the electrical contacs clean. It will start to get sluggish after those three years.
