Where does game '_x_' 'lose you' ... ?

Hey all:

I've been doing some replaying recently, and have been plagued by the point at which a game 'loses' me ... in other words, when I switch from loving (or even just liking) it to just wanting to get through it.

I'm going to post my brief thoughts, maybe others want to share ...

Medal of Honor Allied Assault: When playing through it again just before Christmas, I was struck anew at just how 'tight' a game it is, the action is tense and snappy. However, once I hit sniper alley again, I never had that feel again ... the mega-cheater AI just spoiled it there, and it never seemed to come back.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein: This one is interesting in that it lost me then got me back and then lost me again. It is interesting that I like it but wouldn't call it 'tight' like MoHAA. I guess my first couple of times through I didn't mind emptying clips into zombies, but at this point I find it tiresome. But then after that it picks up again, and is fun again. However, I stopped playing again after some of the XLabs parts ...

Soldier of Fortune II: Hong Kong. I never quite get back to the joy of picking apart random terrorists after Hong Kong. The difference between Nar Shadda in JKII being empty and Hong Kong being empty is that we see Nar Shadda empty out during TESB - it seems like a fairly skittiish amd mobile population, prone to leave. Hong Kong - in theory - has no clue what's going on, so the streets should be teeming ... or at least a few folks (more than one or two). Some time around there the 'the paths through these levels look like they were drawn with an etch a sketch using one knob at a time' factor wore on me as well. I've finished it 4 or 5 times, but it gets old before it gets finished.

JKII - I think the reason JKII is my fave game of all time is that the part I don't like is early on, and the latter parts I love more and more ... I didn't like Artus Mines - mainly because of those stupid mine bugs. My first time through I couldn't wait to get past them and was having 'oh no, don't tell me this is going to be just like Elite Force (I hated the bugs there also). But also because I felt under-gunned at that point. Then there was the whole Valley thing, and between Morgan existing in the Force and there being the Force power tower (someone obviously didn't concern themselves too much about researching JK1) However, then came Yavin ... learning the Force, getting the saber ... ahhh ... the only bit I see any point about is that the final duel can be a bit short. But hey, if you sneeze you're dead, so I don't mind it too much ...

What does everyone else have to say - what games do you think about, or what were your frustrations?

Mike

Oh, I just have to mention Doom Legacy, which is an OpenGL port of DoomI/II (depending on your WAD file, I'm playing II) to Mac OS X, featuring WASD/Mouse controls, crosshairs, etc ... whole new experience ...

ypu know there are even a couple where its impossible to get to the final boss, Take Q-Bert for example i played that in grade 7 for about a whole year and seamed to always get higher and higher but never to the end. some of my gams are like that to Rhett, but my dad told me if i dont pass it he wont buy me another so i rushed to my system and passed about 3 games in under and hour, it must've been an NES record

I agree completely about JK2.

I feel like playing through it on the "Jedi Master" difficulty, but the first part of it without lightsaber is just flat out boring IMHO. Maybe it's just me, but I find it disturbingly hard to aim with the blaster due to the shot's low speed - as soon as I got the saber, it was my main weapon.

I've got much the same feeling with other games: You recall it as a somewhat fun experience, but then you actually play it again and remember which parts of it you absolutely hated. And that's sadly sometimes enough to ruin the whole game. Frustration is bad gameplay.

Some are still flat out fun, though. Halflife didn't have any irritating moments at all. The end game got a bit weird, but it retained its gameplay.

Diablo 2: After playing this game for about a month there isn't much left to do except cow runs, mfing, and dueling, and all those get tedious (course it's still the best game ever made I played it non-stop for a year, now I hardly touch it lol), after a few months.

A console game to bring up is Stuntman for PS2. That game is really interesting in the beginning. But it too get's tedious in the later stages because you eventually just get sick of doin' the same crap over again from simple failures, and the director is annoying to listen to the load times suck, and they never give u a layout of what's ahead.

Actually, regarding JKII, I *liked* the first levels. I reminded me very much of one of my other favorite games - Dark Forces. But the bowcaster - while better than in JK1 - still left me wanting more gun sooner. I would have liked something functionally equivalent to the shotgun in SoFII - in other words, one up-close shot means a true 'frag' ;-)

My main beef was those mine bugs ... they were grating on me ...

Half-Life I never got as excited about as others ... oh, well ...

And I liked Serious Sam 2, but then I picked up SS1, and haven't got past level 1 (not by dying, just don't want to do it again).

Finally, I thought of another annoyance - games deciding who you can and can't kill and when. In RtCW, in Norway, going towards the XLabs, there was a look-out port by a bridge-type thing. I sniped one guard, then waited with my scope (and my 'bar' totally gone, meaning I was perfectly aimed) for the other guy. I hit him 3 times without killing him ... I tried a few times. I had to enter through the roof to kill him ...

Ahh Diablo, forgot to mention that. It's immensely fun at first. You're exploring, getting better skills, meeting new monsters, and killing them. But once you've completed all the acts, what's there to do? Go check out all the skills you didn't see, of course! So, when that is done, and you've progressed to level 35 with every character, which enables you to see every skill and graphic effect in the game, there's really nothing else to do.

The rest is numbers. Pure numbers. Sure, I want to make my characters all level 99.... what fun doing the same thing over and over and over again. What fun getting a sword with 59 extra cold damage instead of the old with only 27.

Of course, the game can still be fun to play if you actually like doing the same robotic click 'n kill concept all the time. It just doesn't cut it for me.

Yes Cjais you elaborated more on my post with more accuracy, then I previously volunteered. I agreed with everything u said. There's JUST enough stuff in that game to keep you interested (when will I get that next Vamp Gaze or Shako?? I've never tried this variant etc. etc.), but really once you've finished all 5 act's the game is done and those 5 act's can be finished in 15 minutes if you are rushed anyways so.... the only thing to move onto next is the higher difficulty, more mfing, more cow/bloody foothill runs, or more dueling. *yawns*

I lose a game when you beat the gmae and theres nothing else to do in that game

that is different with jkII. i dont think the game will lose me untill of course Star Wars Galaxies. i do have Battlefield 1942 and even though single player is mostly the exact same thing as multiplayer it is still an awesome game.

i have plenty of non-internet games that ive lost maybe after a week because ive beaten it. zelda for one, we beat it and then havent touched it since.

now for sports games they sometimes last long and short. i lose sports game when the real sport's season is over, like right now i wouldnt play i baseball game and i would start to lose the exictement of a football game because ive been playing it for about 20 weeks.

internet games i dont lose because there are always different people that are new to the game and you can teach them and the internet game is rarely the same in different servers.

i cant wait untill star wars galaxies
