Jedi Apprentice Posted February 15, 2003 Posted February 15, 2003 Ok I can understand the 70 by 70 pixel rule, but why does it have to be 20000 bytes or smaller. I think that should be upped because if the image is 70 by 70 the byte size isn't really gonna make it load slower or anything. Just my thoughts.
Lord Fergie Posted February 15, 2003 Posted February 15, 2003 Acually I had a 70 x 70 pic that said it would take 1 min to load on 56 K
Jedi Apprentice Posted February 15, 2003 Author Posted February 15, 2003 Was it a huge gif file or something?
Thrik Posted February 15, 2003 Posted February 15, 2003 Don't forget that every single avatar is hosted locally on the LucasForums server. If everyone has really large file-size avatars then the server will struggle with bandwidth - just like it did before (and it went down constantly).
Lord Fergie Posted February 15, 2003 Posted February 15, 2003 If its a static avatar (which are the best if ou can find a good one, or ones with very little animation) 20k should be no prob
scabb Posted February 15, 2003 Posted February 15, 2003 It is possible to create a 10mb animated gif with dimensions 70 x 70. Besides, not everybody who posts on these forums has broadband, a few are on 56ks and there needs have to be taken into consideration too.
Jedi Apprentice Posted February 15, 2003 Author Posted February 15, 2003 I have a 56k connection and the animated avatars load just as fast if not faster than regular ones.

They are also under 20k. Fact is that the larger the file size is, the more data has to be transmitted. The internet doesn't care about dimensions...that's a page layout thing.
ZBomber Posted February 15, 2003 Posted February 15, 2003 Is there a way that yuo could get linked avatars a bigger size limit? That might work.
matt-- Posted February 16, 2003 Posted February 16, 2003 There are no linked avatars...you upload by url.
mercatfat Posted February 16, 2003 Posted February 16, 2003 Yes, because red X avatars and thousands of posts saying "WHY IZ MY AVATER AR ED X IT IS A PICTUR OF TEH MATRIX NTO A X" are just what this forum needs.
scabb Posted February 16, 2003 Posted February 16, 2003 There's nothing that makes a board look more unsightly than a bunch of of unavailable avatars with red crosses in the corner. [edit: mercatfat sucks]

Thrik Posted February 16, 2003 Posted February 16, 2003 Just be happy with what you've got - many forums don't even allow avatars at all. 20k is adequate for any image. It's only if you get greedy and expect to have a long animated job (which is irritating I might add) that you encounter problems.

Forgive my ignorance.
